The Art of Systems Architecting, Third Edition (Systems Engineering), by Mark W. Maier

If engineering is the art and science of technical problem solving, systems architecting happens when you don’t yet know what the problem is. The third edition of a highly respected bestseller, The Art of Systems Architecting provides in-depth coverage of the least understood part of systems design: moving from a vague concept and limited resources to a satisfactory and feasible system concept and an executable program. The book provides a practical, heuristic approach to the "art" of systems architecting. It provides methods for embracing, and then taming, the growing complexity of modern systems.

New in the Third Edition:

  • Five major case studies illustrating successful and unsuccessful practices
  • Information on architecture frameworks as standards for architecture descriptions
  • New methods for integrating business strategy and architecture and the role of architecture as the technical embodiment of strategy
  • Integration of process guidance for organizing and managing architecture projects
  • Updates to the rapidly changing fields of software and systems-of-systems architecture
  • Organization of heuristics around a simple and practical process model

A Practical Heuristic Approach to the Art of Systems Architecting

Extensively rewritten to reflect the latest developments, the text explains how to create a system from scratch, presenting invention/design rules together with clear explanations of how to use them. The author supplies practical guidelines for avoiding common systematic failures while implementing new mandates. He uses a heuristics-based approach that provides an organized attack on very ill-structured engineering problems. Examining architecture as more than a set of diagrams and documents, but as a set of decisions that either drive a system to success or doom it to failure, the book provide methods for integrating business strategy with technical architectural decision making.

Review
…The only way to develop this skill is to serve an apprenticeship with a proven practitioner. However, there are simply not enough gurus to go around, and I would recommend this book both for students of the discipline and as serious reading for experienced designers who wish to recognize and maintain their expertise.

You should read it to learn the heuristics
By A. Hofman
The authors Rechtin and Maier first address the discussion of Architecting vs Engineering. Interesting. In Part 1 they focus on 4 architecting methodologies: Normative (solution based), Rational (method based), Participative (stakeholder based) and Heuristic (lessons learned). It's good to stress the importance of lessons learned and best practices, although worst practices are very important too. But is a methodology based on Heuristics a methodology? Chapter 2 describes heuristics as tools and this chapter is good to read. Part two of the book, four domains to use Systems Architecting, offers new insights by showing how systems are architected in "builder architected systems" (making products), manufacturing systems, social systems and software systems. Especially the chapter on social systems is good. Remember to ask yourself the 4 who's (who benefits, who pays, who provides and who loses) because these parties influence the acceptance of your system. Part three of the book focusses on models, modelling methodologies and design progression. Chapter 10, written by Brenda Forman, describes the Political proces. In my opinion the best chapter of the book. Every architect, every consultant (whatever kind of consultant) should read this chapter. Terrific heuristics ("Proof is a matter of having the votes", "the best engineering solutions are not necessarily the best political solutions") and good examples on something that a lot of IT professionals don't like: politics. But, as the book suggests: "You may well find the craziness of the political process distasteful - but it will not go away!" You can use the lessons of this chapter every day. Finally, Appendix A lists a lot of heuristics you can use. Recommended reading.

Defining Architecting
By Tom Gilb
Review: This is a great overview of the subject of systems architecture. It is already highly regarded in the systems engineering community. It is rich in useful detail. It gives a comprehensive historical view of the discipline. I found a large number of specific insights about the nature of architecture as opposed to engineering. The collection of over 180 heuristics is an interesting framework for the text. I can highly recommend it as a study to both novices and seasoned professionals. The guest chapters on political process and systems architecting (Brenda Forman), and The Professionalization of Systems Architecting (Elliot Axelbrand) are both valuable additions to the immense vocabulary of the authors.
If I have one quibble it is that the book correctly insists on quantification of performance attributes as the only proper basis for architecture, certification, and engineering. But it so often denies the measurability of so called `soft' values - and remarkably includes things like `safety', and `environmental impact' in that category. I fear that setting too high a standard for quantification leaves us with mere ambiguous words. This of course is a widespread problem. I disagree, and will take up the discussion with the authors and the community - as I already have done. In addition I find a complete lack of examples, or discussion, about how `multiple performance and cost attributes' can be used by the architectural level to understand the architectural problem. There are far too many non-quantified models, and far too little insight as to how a systems architect would deal with the quantified attribute requirements of a system. Maybe in the 3rd Edition?

If you need to invent systems, read this book.
By A Customer
This book addresses the rather neglected field of invention, specifically invention of systems. Whereas most books on systems address either formal analysis of an already invented system or the process for keeping track of system descriptive data (classical systems engineeringt), Maier and Rechtin address the really hard issues of how does one invent a system from scratch.

This book contains a general discussion of the process of invention of systems. Most importantly, the authors then tie this process description to a set of system invention / design rules that they refer to as heuristics. The heuristics are then discussed in some detail so as to improve the reader's interpretation and judgement in the use of these system invention / design rules.

Examples are very useful in any craft. The authors acknowledge this by providing some useful examples of the application of the system invention / design rules to a number of different system problems.

This book is a must read for anyone interested in or affected by artificial systems, whether they are technical, enviornmental, social, or other types of systems. Their clear presentation of a set of useful system invention / design rules together with a clear explaination of how to make practical use of these rules can assist any system architect in improving the level of maturity of his/her practice.

Rut, Rot, or Revival: The Problem of Change and Breaking Out of the Status Quo, by A. W. Tozer

"If the messages in this book were read and acted upon by every pastor and church member, we would have the revival for which Dr. Tozer fervently prayed, and for which many of us are praying today." — Warren Wiersbe

"The church should be a healthy, fruitful vineyard that will bring honor to Christ," says A. W. Tozer. But to do so, we as individuals must stop accepting the status quo and get out of our spiritual ruts.

In Rut, Rot or Revival, Tozer describes the signs of being in a spiritual rut, the reasons we get into them, how to get out, and, most importantly, why we need to get out now.

Who has ever heard of a Christian being in a Rut?
By P. B. Jones
Tozer is one of my favorite writers. He had a God given talent for laying the honest truth down on paper and convicting the heck out of me. I read this as a gift. I have since ordered it for my entire church board, after one lady I loaned it to came back crying over it's impact, stating that everyone in the church should read this book. Well- I can't do that. But our board is going over it chapter by chapter.
If you want to be convicted and see your spiritual condition read this book. In a vast sea of worthless Christian books this is a must read.

One of the best and most relevent of our day books by Tozer
By Claude T. Stauffer
This is a book that fits right into the context of our day. If ever there was a book that the lethargic church needed to absorb, this is it. I am going through the book with my church leadership. My favorite Tozer book is The Pursuit of God. What that book is for the individual, Rut, Rot or Revival is for the church. This is a must read!

Some of Tozers greatest revelation
By Daryl W.
This is indeed one of my favorite books from Tozer. Nobody possessed a greater talent than A.W. Tozer when it came to pulpit ministry and inspirational writing. His own personal commitment to Christ shows through his works and his living example encourages and challenges the reader to press on toward the mark of the high calling of Christ. In this timeless classic from Tozer, you will see a pretty good picture where you stand with Christ, and where you ought to stand. While the world is changing around us, the Christian should be seeking revival of the old paths charted by the gospel of Christ, that the world has long left behind. I so highly recommend this book to the sincere Christian. Written many decades ago by a man who has long since been absent from our presence but committed his life to showing others the way to Christ.

How Wiccan Spirituality Is Filling a Spiritual Hunger in America

Hundreds of thousands of people practice Wicca and other forms of modern Pagan spirituality in America today, and journalist Catherine Edwards Sanders wanted to understand why such belief systems are rapidly attracting followers. When a routine magazine assignment led her to realize that her stereotype of Wiccans as eccentric spiritual outsiders was embarrassingly misinformed, her curiosity compelled her to understand the Wiccan mystique. With the support of a journalism fellowship, Sanders spent a year interviewing neo-Pagans and witches and found that the lure of this emerging spirituality was not the occult, but rather a search for meaning in an increasingly fragmented and materialistic culture.

With keen observation, challenging insight, and compassionate critique, Sanders produces a lively narrative about what she experienced and discovered during her travels: Halloween rituals in Salem, anti-globalization protests in New York, and the contrasts between what seekers find in neo-Paganism that they perceive as lacking in Christian tradition. In Wicca’s Charm, Sanders explains the powerful attraction of an increasingly mainstream spirituality that celebrates the wonder of creation and the life-giving energy of women while also exploring why Christian churches often fail to engage these seekers, but how they can learn to tap into the deep roots of Christianity to nourish the hunger of so many who seek a holistic and authentic worship experience.

Review
Wicca’s Charm...is intended for adults trying to understand why others practice Wicca. Sanders was a journalist on assignment when she was forced to examine her own stereotypical views of Wicca; subsequently, she secured a journalism fellowship to spend a year learning about Wicca and what makes it so appealing to its practitioners; an objective view of the tradition results. Discussion questions at the end of the book correspond to each of the chapters. The result is a good, basic overview of the origins and theories of the religion as well as plenty of firsthand accounts from current and former practitioners of Wicca..—Library Journal

“Wicca’s Charm is one of those books that charms and beguiles you even as it informs you. The reporting is seamless and the writing effortless. Catherine Sanders has made a brilliant debut as a writer on a spiritual matter that should be of deep interest to all thinking Americans.”
–David Aikman, former senior correspondent for Time magazine, and author of Jesus in Beijing, A Man of Faith: The Spiritual Journey of George W. Bush, and the novel Qi

“For Christians who want to understand the culture our own failures have sown and are now reaping, and for those who want to reach out persuasively to this emerging culture, Sanders’s warm, clear, and helpful introduction to Wicca is essential reading.”
–Os Guinness, author of The Call: Finding and Fulfilling the Central Purpose of Your Life

“Catherine Sanders’s work in this book is careful, thoughtful, and respectful. It will enable many outside Wicca to understand it better, and it will also allow practitioners of Wicca and other similar ways to gain a deeper insight into the best of Christianity.”
–Frederica Mathewes-Green, author of The Illumined Heart: The Ancient Christian Path of Transformation

–Susan Alexander Yates, best-selling author of several books, including, And Then I Had Teenagers: Encouragement for Parents of Teens and Preteens

“Wicca’s Charm is a fine demonstration of a rare Christian virtue: attentive listening. With a clear conviction that authentic Christian belief is a valid response to Wiccan yearnings, Sanders holds, in tension, a humble recognition that Christian compromise with materialistic rationalismand individualism in Western culture has driven many to take up dangerous alternatives.”
–Peter Harris, director of A Rocha International

“Wicca’s Charm provides an accessible, thorough, and sensitive guide to understanding contemporary interest in Wicca and neo-Paganism. It will be of help to anyone interested in understanding how nature worship under various names is reasserting itself in the Western world.”
–James A. Herrick, professor of communication at Hope College, and author of The Making of the New Spirituality: The Eclipse of the Western Religious Tradition

“Catherine Sanders spent more than a year listening to Wiccans in an attempt to understand the growth and appeal of Wicca today. She encourages Christians to dialogue with neo-Pagans, clarifying points of common ground while simultaneously pointing out with compassion and sensitivity the inadequacies of Paganism to fulfill their deep and legitimate longings.”

“Catherine Sanders has provided an eye-opening, sensitive, and honest journey into the heart of Wicca. Ringing no false alarms, she has made an erudite contribution to understanding this contemporary movement.”
–Lilian Calles Barger, author of Eve’s Revenge: Women and a Spirituality of the Body, and founder of the Damaris Project

“Wicca’s Charm is a must-read for parents! A fascinating account full of stories and personal interviews, Catherine Sanders’s book provides wonderful insights into why young people seek alternative spiritualities and what Christians should know about it!”

–Mardi Keyes, codirector of L’Abri Fellowship in Southborough, Massachusetts, and author of Feminism and the Bible

From the Inside Flap
In "Wicca's Charm, Sanders explains the powerful attraction of an increasingly mainstream spirituality that celebrates the wonder of creation and the life-giving energy of women while also exploring why Christian churches often fail to engage these seekers, but how they can learn to tap into the deep roots of Christianity to nourish the hunger of so many who seek a holistic and authentic worship experience.

Lacks intellectual credibility
By Jerome Matthews
This book was funded and published by a Christian source, and written to a Christian audience. Despite the author's assertions of objectivity, her writing contains none.

Why I gained respect for the author:

- She called on fellow Christians to be more environmentally conscious and to recognize women as spiritual equals.

- She pointed out how many Wiccans and Neo-Pagans are hypocrites, and this encouraged some serious self-assessment. (Many of us shake a disapproving finger at consumer culture with one hand, while handing over ridiculous amounts of money with the other for the latest flavor of tarot deck, ritual gear, etc.)

Why this respect was lost:

- She attempted to appear balanced and objective when actually she was neither. This book is written from the subjective view that Wicca is wrong and Christianity is right.

- Sanders' hypocrisy when discussing a Pagan creation myth. When she questioned Wiccans and Neo-Pagans about why they chose their current path over Christianity, one of the most frequent answers was "It empowers women, unlike Christianity." The author then discusses why she feels Wicca isn't empowering for women, citing the fallacy of the matriarchal myth as well as the womanizing tendencies of a man who influenced early Wicca, Aleister Crowley. Yes, many scholars agree that the idea of a "matriarchal golden age" is unlikely...but plenty also agree that the Biblical creation myth is equally implausible. I'm curious why Sanders subjects one myth to scrutiny but not the other. And as far as the author's insistence that Christianity actually _does_ empower women, give me a break. Eve was the bearer of original sin, right?

If I could go back and borrow this book instead of buy it, I definitely would.

as well as your personal life choices in your own hands rather than some go between that may or may not have the best interests
By A. L. F.
I'm honestly not even sure where to begin with this book. It fallows along the same ideas any other anti pagan disguised as a "deeper understanding" type works. As a pagan myself for more that 25 years, I cant see anything of my own ideology in this book. I started with Wicca and stayed there for 5-6 years in the beginning. Throughout all that time I didn't and still haven't based it in anything political or feminist. The thing I gathered and still see very strongly in Wicca is it puts your spiritual choices, as well as your personal life choices in your own hands rather than some go between that may or may not have the best interests of the congregation at large in mind or heart. I puts responsibility of your actions in your own hands. It makes you realize your action or in action has consequences and you better be ready to deal with them. It allows people to study and connect with deity in ways they understand and actually feel connected directly. It's very much a personal, internal progression that isn't for everyone. In my mind that's ok. Not everyone can just give it all over to some unseen deity and through some figurehead of a church in good conscience either. That's ok too. If Christians truly want to have an open dialog in peace, they need to first be solid enough in their own faith to not worry about other people's choices in religion and faith outside of Christianity, and then be willing to learn why other people choose other faiths. They need to realize that, once they have found their strength and faith in their own religion, that other people from other religious leanings have that same exact feeling in their beliefs. They have to understand that religion isn't a one size fits all sort of thing or their wouldn't be so many sects even in their own religion. Only then will their be true peace and open dialog between Christians and not only pagans, but any and all other religion. Act your own conscience in your own life, in your own faith and leave others to do the same in theirs. That is the key they seem to miss so horribly.

Communism Falls: But What Arises?
By Martin Asiner
It is tempting to read THE FALL OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE in the light of the events after 1991 when Boris Yeltsin stood on a Russian tank to address the troops who were sent to arrest him but instead followed him in ousting a seven decade old communist dictatorship. The 'fall' of the novel occurs in 1986, unlike its real life counterpart of 1991. Yet the difference between the fictional fall and the actual fall was one more of degree than of kind. In hindsight, it now seems obvious that the former Soviet Union was ripe for a fall. Donald James raises a number of issues that early in the novel suggest this fall was imminent. James notes a fact that may have been surprising to one who was unfamiliar with Russian history and geography: "At the root of the looming problems was the simple fact that the Soviet Union was an empire comprising fifteen totally different nations, one hundred languages, a racial spectrum from Slav to Mongol." James sets the background of his novel by drawing a comparison between the disunity of the Soviet people with the disunity of the Soviet Army: "By the early 1980's all but the first rank of Soviet Army divisions were riddled with racial tensions." Into this cauldron of oil and water, James introduces his major characters: Zoya Densky, who flits in and out of the action and supplies first hand limited view perspective; Natalya Roginova, the leader of the Soviet Union before she is ousted in a coup; Semyon Kuba, who follows Roginova as a Stalin wanna-be First Secretary and Absolute Leader of Russia; and Bubo, the penal convict who escapes the gulag to lead an army of penals to the very gates of Moscow with the intention of burning down the capital.
There is no 'hero' in the traditional sense of a novel's dramatic center. Each of the main characters has his moments on stage and either reacts to events beyond his control, as Zoya Densky does, or acts to try to contain the uncontainable fury of the penal army as both Kuba and Bubo do. Along the way, the reader learns a great deal about the inner rot that comprised the heart of the Communist Party. By the novel's end, Kuba has only one option to retain his quickly dissipating hold on power. He tries a mass purge of murder and arrest for all those of the Politburo and Central Committee who threaten to balk his plans to control Russia, but he is too late. He himself is removed in a coup which restores Natalya Roginova to power. Kuba seems not surprised at his fate: "Try as he might, he could not imagine where he had gone wrong, or how Joseph Vissarionovich might have done better."
James accurately portrays how a great country was lead astray by a clique of power hungry radicals in 1917 and how those same radicals bled that nation of pride, power, and respect. Perhaps there is a lesson for the current center of Russian leadership: the infinite capacity of the Russian people to sacrifice for the common good is matched only by an equal capacity for anger when they see that their sacrifices have been in vain.

Amazingly Prophetic Work
By Gary Selikow
I would guess that not since the works of Aldous Huxely and George Orwell has a novel been so prophetic.Of course some of the details were not correct in this 1982 novel -written the year of Brezhnev's death- but so much of it was to come true. The decisive years in the novel were 1980 to 1985 while in reality the decisive events that finally cracked the Soviet monolith took place from 1985 to 1991.A member of the old guard is elected after Brezhenev ,but just like Andropov and Chernenko, die within roughly a year of assuming office. There is a struggle between hardliners and reformists led by a female Gorbachev figure.Eventually the fate of the Soviet Empire is decided in a dramatic standoff in Moscow between the people of Moscow and troops loyal to the hardline Communists-chillingly like the events of August 1991-leading to the collapse of the communist monster. One by one the Soviet Republics secsede from the Union as was to really happen. The hardliners-including the KGB -conspire to stall reform but fail.A look into the heart of the communist tyranny reveals what was going on when the book was written,at a time when those on the left in the west were denying these horrors. The Free Trade Union movement mirrors Solidarity in Poland and the passions of nationalism in the Soviet colonies and in Russia itself are depicted
The book is an epic in itself with suspense, love ,hate, horror and all the ingredients of a good novel. It centers around several characters inlcuding the young and lovely Zoya Densky who symbolizes the new generation that would in fact overthrow despotism in Russia and Eastern Europe,an American diplomat and his wife;Letsukov-a Ukrainian KGB agent who turns and helps the overthrow of the Russian Empire;Igor Bukansky-a journalist who has betrayed his principals but when he finally stands up to the government is destroyed together with his lover, the sensual but tragic Lydia Petrovna-the mother of the narrator of this story. Then there is Joeph Densky-a combination of Vaclav Havel and Lech Walesa and Kuletsyn-Lydia's uncle who is a renowned dissident writer and eccentric but whose bitterness and particularly his calouss refusal to help his niece and Bukansky helps seal their fate.Indeed for all the idealism of his work Kuletsyn is in my opinion exposed as a cruel and hateful figure

IF I COULD GIVE THIS SIX STARS I WOULD - IT'S BEAUTIFUL!
By quibecca
If you are an emotional reader like I am then grab a box of tissues. I have always said I love it when an author can pull me in and make me feel like I am walking in the story right along with the characters. This one did just that, and so much more.

I don't know how many times I have asked my kids this questions "If your friends jumped off a cliff would you". Never once did I consider "if your friends went cliff jumping would you". I loved cliff jumping when I was younger. Now as an adult / mother, I would never do it. Plus the older I get the wimpier I get...hehe.

Bryan is looking forward to going on a trip with the youth. This will be his last time to go because he is 18 . He sets off on his adventure with his best friends, sister Becky, and much to his chagrin his parents as chaperone's, along with other youth. (youth, a word in my world (LDS world) meaning ages 12-18 groups). They are going on a white water rafting trip.

Bryan's father tell him that there will be some cliffs they will be able to jump off of when they are on the trip. Bryan is so excited and shares the news with this friends. All of the boys are even more excited to go on this trip now.

Two days into their rafting trip they make camp and find the cliffs. Bryan's friends were enjoying themselves before Bryan was able to join. When he arrived he didn't want to "show" every one up, but he decided he must dive. Bryan takes a running jump and does the most beautiful swan dive and enters the water like butter, and his whole life changes.

Bryan realized when he hit the water that something was wrong.. The bottom was coming too fast, and then he hears a pop. He knows, right then that his life will never be the same.

Unable to move Bryan sits in the water holding is breath until someone finally is able to get to him and bring him to the surface. They boys and leaders know right away something is wrong. Bryan's dad knows that Bryan will not survive a trip to the hospital on the rafts so he goes to the nearest ranger station. Leaving Bryan and his mother on the shore to wait for help. 18 hours they waited. I cannot even tell explain how hard it was to read about those 18 hours, yet also so loving to read. A true showing of love and friendship was shown during those long hours.

Bryan, from the moment he was retrieved from the water did not complain even once. He responded when he saw his dad "That was the best swan dive ever". Who says that? He knows he will probably be paralyzed but this kid. This kid..is amazing. He had unwavering faith.

This book brought me to tears so many time. Not only because of the hardships Bryan faced, but because even when facing them, he went forward with perfect faith and determination. I cried at the devotion his family. I cried at his determination. It was such a beautiful story.

Bryan faces a life in a wheel chair but during the healing process finds love. I love stories like this. I could go on and on. I really could. There is so much I want to say, but then I would ruin the book. Maybe not ruin but wouldn't allow you to feel your own "emotions" while reading. Spoilers do that to me.

My heart ached for Bryan. It cried for Bryan. It laughed for Bryan. This man. What can I say. Determined. Charismatic. Optimistic. Kind. Loving. Non judgemental. I think about the things Bryan had to go through and it reminds me of everything I have to be thankful for. I have the use of my arms, and legs. I can do things for myself. I can play with my kids. I can read without help. I can do many things. So could Bryan. He was determined not to let his disability define him.

There are quotes before every chapter that just made my heart happy. I want to share a few:

"Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny." C.S. Lewis

This next one is my favorite quote. It is from one of the sweetest ladies to ever walk the earth (besides my mother;) ).

"The only way to get through this life is to laugh your way through it. You either have to laugh or cry. I prefer to laugh. Crying gives me a headache." - Marjorie Pay Hinckley _

Bryan was one of the best examples of this. He is such a funny guy. A prankster. Even without the use of his legs...a prankster :).

Okay, I will stop. It was such a beautiful story, of trials, determination, love, hope, and unwavering faith. I was touch so deeply by this book, that even after I was done reading I thought about it all day. Every time a "hard" moment would come to me during the day I thought of this book, and began to cry all over again. I have nothing to complain about. My life is a wonderful life, and this book helped me look at things a little different. A little brighter. A little more appreciative. A little more loved. Seriously. Such a beautiful story.

I started this book yesterday morning and finished long before bedtime - I love stories like this one!
By Kathy Habel
I met Stacy earlier this year at a writer's conference. At the time I was interested in reading her Princess Sister books because I love twisted fairy tales. Unfortunately my review is list so long I never got around to getting those books read. Stacy contacted me a couple weeks ago asking if I would be willing to review her newest book which is based on her father-in-law's life. Honestly I'm not sure why but initially I wasn't really excited to read this book. However yesterday morning found me looking for something Sunday appropriate to read so I started this book. And then read it every chance I had until I finished it long before bedtime.

I actually love stories like this. Ones that show the power of the human spirit and what love and determination can achieve. I cried multiple times while reading this but they were a happy sort of hopeful tears. I felt so much admiration for a few of the characters and the choice they made. And I loved when I got to the end of the book and saw the actual photos of the people I had just read about. This world needs more people like Nedra and Bryan.

There were a few times the story lagged a little bit but it would pick right back up before I lost interest. It has a memoir-ish feel to it and rightfully so as it is based upon actual people and events.

It you are looking for something uplifting and motivational read this heart-felt story of love and hope.

A story of faith and determination
By Amazon Customer
Based on a true story, the inspirational My Name is Bryan is a story about a guy who makes the dive of his life--just not the way he thought it would when he jumped. I plowed through his story, amazed at how he could so easily accept something that would destroy anyone else and just move forward with such a positive attitude. I don't give many 5 stars, but it's well-earned. This book really touched me. It's the kind of story that stays with you for a long time.

Great Ideas the Invisible Hand (Penguin Great Ideas), by Adam Smith

Adam Smith’s landmark treatise on the free market paved the way for modern capitalism, arguing that competition is the engine of a productive society, and that self-interest will eventually come to enrich the whole community, as if by an ‘invisible hand’. Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves – and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives – and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization and helped make us who we are.

Appropriating Adam Smith
By Joel Shelton
If you want to read Adam Smith (and you should), read his books (The Wealth of Nations, The Theory of Moral Sentiments), or a thorough representation of his collected writings, i.e. Heilbroner's The Essential Adam Smith. "The Invisible Hand" referenced in the title of this slim volume of excerpted material appears exactly once in WN and once in TMS; there is both more and less to Smith than these repackaged passages from WN make out - more, in that much of the richness and subtly of Smith's assessment of the possibilities and limits of commercial society is lost when it is cut up and repackaged, and less, in that privileging the metaphor of the invisible hand appropriates Smith for a kind of lazy laissez-faire economics which his writing taken as a whole does not champion. In short, this is a narrow little volume that says more about the politics (and attention spans) of our time than it does about the rather more complex issues of scarcity, order, and abundance facing Smith and his contemporaries.

Adam Smith's Invisible Hand
By Brian R. Bennett
A crowning discussion of Adam Smith's view on the relationship between supply and demand, and the benefits of a Free Market system. Most people can easily see the benefits of buyer and seller: I can buy an item for an agreed upon price. Who benefits? Of course, I do since I wanted the item at that price; however, the seller benefits because he sold an item at a price he was willing to sell it for. An unseen benefit is that the financial exchange also benefits society as well in terms of taxes levied and paid, portions of taxes distributed throughout society, and the fact that buying said product encourages the manufacturer to continue his work.

The Free Market system is a wonderful example of people being able to make choices to buy or sell something as they see fit. No one is "forced" to buy, and no one is "forced" to sell. If you want something, there is a price; take it, or leave it!
