About the Author

Andrew M. Duncan started programming in FORTRAN on Control Data 6600 hardware in 1974, and a quarter century later progressed to Mac OS X. He holds a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, and a Masters in mathematics from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He is now on leave from doctoral work on compilers at UC Santa Barbara. He currently works at Expertcity, designing the core class libraries.

Compact and full of information on a weird language.

As an advanced C++ programmer trying to pick up Objective-C (a weird freakin' language if you ask me), I found this little Pocket Reference to be invaluable. For one thing, its really small which I like -- who needs another tome to litter the bookshelves? I find that it is well written, I actually just started reading it from the beginning and found it to be pretty easy to follow. Finally I = [[NSString alloc] initWithString:@"Understand"]; the crazy formatting for Objective-C methods which just looked like jibberish to me at first. Believe me, after 20 years of programming I can usually understand languages that I've never touched before -- I really needed this book to help me get a handle on Objective-C and it did a commendable job.

Negatives: of course, this is not exactly comprehensive. Since I am also learning Cocoa, I would have liked a little more Cocoa material mixed in. I did find that the writing was at times a bit confusing when discusssing some of the more abstruse concepts of Objective-C. And, always, I like lots of real code examples -- perhaps that just isn't feasible in a book this compact.

Overall, this is a very good book for a newcomer to Objective-C. With this in one hand and Google in the other I can get by quite nicely as I write my iPhone Apps.

Good, but not for beginners

I got this book for a friend who really enjoys programming and wanted to get more in depth with applications. He specifically had been asking for books about Objective C. I assumed this book would be a big help, since he already had a good handle on programming in a general sense. I was right to a point. He loves the book and is finding it very helpful and informational. It is most definitely a handy reference book to keep with you as an Objective C programmer. But it does not get into any of the finer details (as it shouldn't, being a pocket reference) and I did not consider that he did not already have a good grasp on that. So this is an excellent book to get for a person who already knows the basics of Objective C programming and just wants the quick reference points while they are working. According to my friend it is nearly perfect for that. I just missed the information he needed on some of the earlier info he wanted. Happy Shopping!

Handy, well written Objective-C Reference!

Andrew Duncan's Objective-C Pocket Reference is just the book that budding Cocoa programmers should have on their desk. It is well written, well indexed, and succinct enough to read in an evening if desired.
After reading it cover to cover, I think this will be a valuable resource for looking up any Objective-C related questions I have.
Note, you should have an understanding of C before trying to read this book. Also - it will probably make more sense to you if you already have some experience with Cocoa. This is a quick reference - probably not the best way to learn the language. However, the book contains a list at the end which recommends other books and websites which are more thorough.
I'd say it's well worth the cost.

This process goes from the design of concurrent algorithms to the testing phase where concurrent applications need extra attention. Java includes a comprehensive API with a lot of ready-to-use components to implement powerful concurrency applications in an easy way, but with a high flexibility to adapt these components to your needs.

The book starts with a full description of design principles of concurrent applications and how to parallelize a sequential algorithm. We'll show you how to use all the components of the Java Concurrency API from basics to the most advanced techniques to implement them in powerful concurrency applications in Java.

You will be using real-world examples of complex algorithms related to machine learning, data mining, natural language processing, image processing in client / server environments. Next, you will learn how to use the most important components of the Java 8 Concurrency API: the Executor framework to execute multiple tasks in your applications, the phaser class to implement concurrent tasks divided into phases, and the Fork/Join framework to implement concurrent tasks that can be split into smaller problems (using the divide and conquer technique). Toward the end, we will cover the new inclusions in Java 8 API, the Map and Reduce model, and the Map and Collect model. This book sets out to examine the ideas and techniques of earlier generations of agricultural and sporting improvers in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and to demonstrate the earlier sources of many of Bakewell's opinions and procedures. It reviews the relationships which may have existed between the ideas of practical animal breeders and those of philosophical naturalists with theoretical ideas about heredity. It also touches on the question of whether the stimulus for the development of new stock was provided by demand for different products or by a desire to obtain knowledge about the heredity of domestic animals.

Breeding contempt?

Reading this book is like joining a seemingly cordial discussion, but as you listen more, you realize you are in the middle of a feud. The long-standing point of contention in this book is the importance of the contribution of the most well-known of animal breeders, Robert Bakewell. Although not addressed directly, there are jibes sprinkled throughout which suggest that Bakewell's contributions were over-rated, and these passages are peculiar, given the book's otherwise neutral, dissertation-like tone. However this quirk does not distract from the other information, which covers animal breeding (horse, cattle and sheep) in England from the earliest part of the written record, say 1500 or so, to the late 1700s. Several ideas of these early breeders were highlighted; first, they thought that imported animals would lose their special qualities after they became acclimatized to the local weather and soil, and so refreshing of stock from outside was viewed as important. Apparently there was no understanding that cross-breeding imported lines with existing ones would change the imported breed's genotype over time. The second idea is that animals were created by God, and were perfect at that time, and any ensuing problems were the result of deterioration due to imperfect human husbandry. This idea is in contrast to those of improvement of species to new summits through selective breeding, an idea which emerged toward the end of the 1700s. Heavy on detail and light on analysis, this book is suited to those with specific questions about the topic.

They don't aways work but some good stuff anyway

I got this book. My dad didn't fall for all but one of these checkmates. But then I was happy. I tried them all, but he would get me down too much to use any of them so I think just the beginners book for juniors worked better anyway. I did get him in the backrank one because he was upset by my little sister tossing stuff when she didn't get her way and he was not paying attention. I got a beginners book for juniors and and a traps book and both worked better. I now beat my dad more than half the time.

Not for kids only

I found the title to be an unfortunate choice; it makes the book look like a kids book. Kids will benefit, but so will anyone with a USCF rating below ~1500. This is not a book about how to move the pieces. It doesn't outline basic strategy such as controlling the center, developing your pieces, or castling early. Instead, almost the entire book is devoted to "The 50 Deadly Checkmating Patterns." These range from the simple back-rank mate to four variations of the Greek gift sacrifice to methods of salvaging a "Petrosian draw" in the endgame. Chandler argues that these are common themes, and that by working through the well-diagramed, two-page-per-example sections, we will notice these possibilities in our play. He includes a test section at the end to how well the material has sunk in. The text is easy to read with clear, well-anotated diagrams (the key move is indicated by an arrow as well as the text), and the hardcover version withstands abuse in your gear bag. This is a superb book to glance at while you're waiting for the tournament to start.

Moderate Checkmate Patters to Learn

I guess I am more into the "workbook" type of books for learning tactical patterns such as "1001 Brilliant Checkmates" by Reinfeld or "Combination Challenge" by Hays.

However, "How to Beat your Dad at Chess" is a better than average chess book. It could use MORE PROBLEMS to work on, which perhaps is my only complaint, but a good one!

About the Author
Len Lichtblau, a native of New York City, received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1981 at the University of Minnesota. He is currently a Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Lichtblau has taught pharmacology and physiology to a wide range of health care professionals including, nursing, pharmacy, medical, dental, public health and veterinary students for over three decades. He is a consultant to the Board of Medical Practice in the state of Minnesota on prescription drug abuse and on drugs acting on the nervous system. Dr. Lichtblau is a pioneer in the field of online health care education.

Great Study Guide

Dr. Lictblau's book is an answer to my prayers! As a recent graduate of an MSN program for psychiatric advanced practice nurses I needed something to help me study for the boards. I have always been intimidated by neurobiology and thought "how am I ever going to learn this stuff?" Well I found that I learned about the brain, the neurotransmitters, the dopamine pathways, the CYP 450 system, the different mental disorders, the meds and was able to "put it all together" as the good Doctor likes to say in his book. I am very confident now, that I will pass. Thank you Dr. Lictblau for this valuable resource. I recommend it highly for anyone that needs to understand neurobiology and must prove that knowledge.

This book cuts straight thru the work of Stahl and ...

This book cuts straight thru the work of Stahl and others to offer understandable language that links neurotransmitters and psychopharmacology in understanding treatment for patients. I highly reccomend this book to anyone trying to wrap their arms around the vast subject of psychopharmacology. I can only hope the author will take up the equal challenge to present the CYP 450 system in equally understandable language.

Very good book choice

This is a great review text - it goes over anatomy and physiology, brain structure and neurotransmitter pathways, covers major disorders and their treatment, and gives a nice summary of most drugs and how they work. It's a thin, fairly brief book, so it wouldn't be enough alone, but it's a great supplement to a more in-depth textbook. I will continue to keep it in my office as a quick reference.

Burjor Avari MBE is Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of History at the Manchester Metropolitan University. He has taught history at school and university levels for over five decades. His previous publications include Islamic Civilization in South Asia: A History of Muslim Power and Presence in the Indian Subcontinent (Routledge, 2013).
