The 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union precipitated one of the greatest crises in the history of science. The Soviet Union had heavily supported science, but the new Russian state had few funds to do so. This collection of David Ogilvy's memos, letters, speech excerpts, and other documents was compiled by an Ogilvy & Mather executive to commemorate the founder's 75th birthday. The writings span a 50-year period from 1935-1986. The cool thing about this book is that most of the contents were not written with the intent to be published, so it feels like a behind-the-scenes look at his management style as well as his thoughts on various subjects.

THE CREATIVE FUNCTION

"You cannot bore people into buying your product; you can only interest them in buying it... Unless your advertising contains a Big Idea it will pass like a ship in the night... Neither soundness nor brilliance is any good by itself; each requires the other... promise, positioning--and brilliant ideas."

"The greater the similarity between products, the less part reason plays in brand selection... We try to create sharply defined personalities for our brands. And stick to those personalities, year after year."

"Nobody in advertising matters more than the copywriter and the art director." On the importance of strong design: "What would you think if the space-buyer in your agency could buy 31 times as much circulation per dollar as other space-buyers... That is exactly the position you art directors are in."

WRITING

Ogilvy said "people who think well, write well." He recommended that all of his employees read Writing That Works; How to Communicate Effectively In Business by Roman and Raphaelson. He also urged his staff, "For Pete's sake write shorter memos. He hated "pseudo-academic jargon... like attitudinal, paradigms, demassification, reconceptualization, symbiotic linkage and so on. Pretentious bulls***."

From a speech given at Colby College, where he was a trustee: "I believe that one of the most useful things we can teach our students is to write lucid reports... and very few college graduates can... Knowledge is useless unless you know how to communicate it--in writing."

NEW BUSINESS

"We should never take an account unless at least one key man can approach it with enthusiasm."

FIRING CLIENTS

Ogilvy met with the CEO of an unnamed client. "I said I've come to resign your business. He asked why. I said because your Executive Vice President is a s***... He's treating your people atrociously and he's treating my people atrociously. Now what he does to your people--that's your business. But I'm not going to allow this man to go on demoralizing the people of Ogilvy &Mather." He also resigned the Rolls Royce account. "The last 600 cars you sent to the United States don't work. And I will no longer be a party to recommending that people buy them."

SHORT-TERM THINKING

Ogilvy was irritated by package goods manufacturers who spent more money on sales promotions than on advertising. "They are spending twice as much on price-cutting as on building brands... they are training consumers to buy on price instead of brand." He concluded that "the men who employ them are more interested in next quarter's earnings than in building their brands." This relates to his repulsion for "the jackasses on Wall Street."

COMPANY CULTURE

"In promoting people to top jobs, we are influenced as much by their character as anything else." Ogilvy preferred long-term employees over job hoppers. At the same time, he had no tolerance for nonperformers, and advised his managers on "separating the passengers without delay." A recurring theme is a happy work environment. "When people aren't having any fun, they seldom produce good work."

LEADERSHIP

"The best leaders are apt to be found among those executives who have a strong component of unorthodoxy in their characters. Instead of resisting innovation, they symbolize it--and companies seldom grow without innovation... But the American brand of democratic leadership doesn't work so well in Europe... That is one reason why it is usually wise for American corporations to appoint natives to lead their foreign subsidiaries."

Ogilvy observed that most corporate executives "are fine problem-solvers and decision-makers, but relatively few of them seem to be outstanding leaders. Some of them, far from inspiring their lieutenants, display a genius for castrating them... I do not believe that fear is a component in good leadership."

STRESS

"I was always scared sick--always a terrible worrywart when I was in my heyday at the agency... I should have been bursting with happiness and satisfaction with all that success. In fact, I was tortured with anxiety."

David Ogilvy wrote Confessions of an Advertising Man in 1963 and Ogilvy on Advertising in 1983. He died in 1999 at his home in Touffou, France.

About the Author

Evelyn Tribole, MS, RDN, is an award-winning registered dietitian with a nutrition counseling practice in Newport Beach, CA, specializing in eating disorders. She also trains health professionals on how to help their clients cultivate a healthy relationship with food, mind, and body through the process of Intuitive Eating, a concept she co-pioneered. Tribole is author of several books, including Healthy Homestyle Cooking, and is coauthor of Intuitive Eating. She was the nutrition expert for Good Morning America, and was a national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for six years. She served three years on the Social Media committee of the Academy for Eating Disorders. Tribole is often sought after by the media for her nutritional expertise, and has appeared in hundreds of interviews, including CNN, NBC’s Today Show, MSNBC, Fox News, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, and People magazine. She also gives presentations around the world on intuitive eating.

Elyse Resch, MS, RDN, is a nutrition therapist in private practice in Beverly Hills, CA, with over thirty-five years of experience, specializing in eating disorders, intuitive eating, and health at every size. She is coauthor of Intuitive Eating, has published journal articles, and does regular speaking engagements and extensive media interviews. Foreword writer Tracy Tylka, PhD, is professor of psychology at the Columbus and Marion campuses of The Ohio State University. Tylka completed her predoctoral internship at the counseling center at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Everything is Ok

I teach a college class on vampires and I read this book to see what it had to offer. Bottom line, it's ok. It gives basic information on the subject and serves as a possible entry point to the subject, but not a very thorough one. It is definitely worth reading if you are first exploring the subject, but your reading should be supplemented to get more complete, in-depth information.

The beginnings and endings of the chapters are the most frustrating. In the beginning of each chapter the author offers a paragraph to introduce the subject of the chapter, and then when the reader turns the page the author takes up more space with another introduction. So, there is a good page and a half of wasted space that sets up the chapter that gives no useful information (not a characteristic of a concise history). It wouldn't be a problem if the introductory portions had good information, but they do not.

Another factor that is troubling is the presence of watered down information. Definitions, explanations, and anecdotes are only on a surface level, not giving the reader the whole story. That is not to say that the information is inaccurate or not useful or that some portions are, in fact, thorough, it just doesn't paint the whole picture of vampire legend and lore in a satisfactory way.

The book does present some insightful nuggets that other books that attempt to give a survey of vampire lore do not. For example, the section "The Indian Effect" explores the Native American blood legends that are concurrent with vampire lore. This is the only book that I have seen so far that gives that information. Those parts alone make the book worth reading.

N.M.J. Woodhouse's comparatively short Special Relativity is a pleasure to read and therefore qualifies right off as a good source to use for learning about special relativity on your own. A lot of very nice material is touched on in its pages, presented in natural sequence consonant with history, and is not improperly belabored. It's also rather informal in style. One gets the sense of breezing along pretty fast while, in actuality, a lot of material is being dealt with... the selection of topics in the book is very nice indeed , and is historically sound and will therefore reward the reader with an element of culture to boot: he'll learn some history of modern physics... I wish this book had been around when I was a student.

A little mathematics goes a long way

This book requires only a working knowledge of linear algebra and multivariate calculus, and a basic understanding of classical mechanics and electromagnetism.

The author begins by providing a simple but general mathematical exposition of relative motion in classical mechanics. The next two chapters review Maxwell's equations and what they imply for the propagation of light. Having set the stage in this way, the axioms of Einstein's theory are introduced and their implications worked out mathematically, leading the reader to a clear understanding of Minkowski four-dimensional space time and the Lorentz transformation. The exposition is accompanied by a number of classic brainteasers in special relativity.

The weak spot (and hence only four stars) is the treatment of the mass-energy equivalence, which does not include a rigorous derivation of Einstein's famous formula E=mc^2, even though such a derivation is no more demanding mathematically or conceptually than the other issues discussed in the book.

In sum, this book should appeal to any mathematically literate non-physicist who wants more than just a superficial introduction of Einstein's special relativity.

Highest Quality Possible

This is a splendid and very carefully prepared book. It gives very clear and concise explanations of the physical content of the special theory of relativity, and it puts those explanations together directly with the simplest correct mathematical descriptions. It makes the subject as simple as possible---but not simpler. The explanation is clear, and the problems are particularly well chosen and insightful. It is a way to establish a true and complete understanding of the subject as quickly as is reasonably possible. In my opinion, it is the best available introduction and the only book that is really "best choice" for a first course in the subject or as the primary text for self-study.

Not everyone has the same taste. Some people would like to study the subject with as much mathematics being forgiven as possible. Those people will want T. M. Helliwell's book "Special Relativity" instead. Most books that try to avoid almost all the mathematics end up avoiding almost everything interesting and sometimes give the wrong impression, at least in some details. Helliwell is distinguished among the "math lite" approaches.

An alternative textbook introduction is A.P. French "Special Relativity," intended for M.I.T. freshmen. Taylor and Wheeler offer "Spacetime Physics," roughly a more "Caltech like" or "Princeton like" approach. Wolfgang Rindler offers "Introduction to Special Relativity." Both French and Taylor/Wheeler are a little bit simpler, yet thorough introductions, and it is likely that most students would want one or the other as a supplementary text, especially if the goal is pure self-study. Taylor/Wheeler is more colorfully phrased. Rindler's book is almost encyclopedically complete, although I find some sections of his writing to be less clear than they really should be---considering that he is a world class scholar writing for one of the world's top technical publishing houses. Because his treatment is so complete, I think most people will want his book as their long-term reference on the subject. In my own opinion, these are all the "good" books on the subject. If you are a college junior or further along, Woodhouse seems the logical place to begin. College freshmen will probably want to start with French or Taylor/Wheeler instead. High school and below will probably make a better start with Helliwell.

Lucid and succinct mathematical introduction

that does not shirk physics motivation. Prof. Woodhouse's goal is to provide a mathematically rigorous understanding of the key conceptual structures underlying special relativity (but eschewing tensors). To this end, he avoids becoming bogged down in detailed discussions of measuring rods and clocks, light signals, tedious calculations using Lorentz transformations, or long-winded analyses of various so-called paradoxes that are standard fare in some other textbooks (indeed, "paradox" is discussed only once in the book: on p.114 where he dispenses with the so-called Twin Paradox in one short paragraph at the end of section 6.5 [Constant Acceleration]). After an introductory chapter [Relativity in Classical Mechanics] to set the stage, he launches, in chapter 2 [Maxwell's Equations] and chapter 3 [The Propagation of Light] into a wonderfully clear, extended exposition of Maxwell's equations and their implications. These two chapters -- excluding the optional final chapter, about 30 pages out of roughly 150 pages -- make the heaviest demands on the reader (at least they did on this reader).

His treatment of Maxwell's equations in chapter 2 is superb. He starts from The Principle of Relativity (p. 21) and three assumptions specific to electromagnetism (pp. 23-24, accessible via Search Inside) and shows, in a step by step fashion with adequate commentary, how to derive Maxwell's Equations, all in a mathematically rigorous but reader friendly style (no difficult steps in the reasoning are omitted). In chapter 3, he draws out key consequences of Maxwell's theory, discussing in detail the all important source-free equations and the prediction of source-free electromagnetic waves. My background in electromagnetism was quite weak, and so I found these two chapters particularly enlightening. If you work your way through those two meaty chapters, the rest should, for the most part, be smooth sailing.

Only in chapter 4 [Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity] does he get into operational definitions of distance and time, the relativity of simultaneity, length contraction, time dilation and using Bondi's k-factor, two-dimensional Lorentz transformations. This discussion is quite short (about 15 pages). Then in chapter 5 [Lorentz Transformations in Four Dimensions], he gets into the heart of the mathematics of Lorentz transformations, making use of matrix theory and matrix-theoretic proofs of some key propositions, covering the main 4-vectors, inner product (invariant line element), causal structure of Minkowski spacetime, invariant operators, and more. Chapter 5 is only about 20 pages excluding an optional section but nonetheless is admirably clear. Chapters 6 [Relative Motion], 7 [Relativistic Collisions] and 8 [Relativistic Electrodynamics] explore standard topics, all written with his characteristic flair for clear, mathematically precise yet enjoyable explanations. There are many definitions and theorems in this book but he is careful to provide physical motivation and caveats to help avoid misunderstanding, and to focus on the main take away points.

For those with the required background in mathematics and physics, his book is an ideal means for achieving a respectably deep understanding of special relativity and for positioning oneself to understand more advanced topics, including general relativity (for which, I recommend his equally lucid and concise General Relativity (Springer Undergraduate Mathematics Series) as the next logical step).

So what are those prerequisites? On the physics side, the main requirement is a sound understanding of standard electromagnetism as taught to undergraduate physics majors (e.g. as treated in Fundamentals of Physics). On the mathematics side, one needs to be comfortable with the basics of linear algebra/matrix theory, vector calculus (e.g. div, curl, grad, divergence theorem aka Gauss's theorem) and not be thrown by rather abstract proofs.

I have many books on special relativity and in my view, Prof. Woodhouse's is, hands down, one of the very best, mathematically oriented introductions.

About the Author

H. P. Richter wrote the first edition of Wiring Simplified in 1932. W. C. Schwan was the author of subsequent editions of Wiring Simplified until 2002. F. P. Hartwell became the new author of Wiring Simplified—after W. C. Schwan—with the 40th edition. He is the secretary of the Massachusetts Electrical Code Advisory Committee and the author of the American Electricians’ Handbook and Practical Electrical Wiring. He lives in Amherst, Massachusetts.

A Great Reference for the Handyman

This is a great resource for those handymen who are comfortable working with electricity. This book is very easy to read and not only covers the enforced National Electrical Code (NEC) but also provides detailed installation procedures of home electrical material/devices such as wiring, receptacles, lighting fixtures & etc. With prolific pictures, it shows devices and material available and required for specific tasks. In addition it explains & shows correct installation procedures.
As a retired electrical engineer for 18 years, I purchased this book to re-familiarize myself with the latest NEC codes. I can attest to this books value to those having a small or large electrical project and wish to install a safe installation.

Wouldn't be without it

This book (or its previous editions) has been invaluable to this do-it-yourself owner of four different homes over the years. With the book in one hand and tools in the other I have been able to rewire much of two older homes, newly wire finished basements in two others and completely rewire a remodelled kitchen (all up to the current code of the time). The material is well organized and presented in language understandable to the non-professional.

Simplified Not Simple

THE BEST HANDS-ON, HOW-TO WIRING BOOK FOR THE LAYMAN AND TRADESMAN
I've owned and used and loaned and lost various editions since the 60's, both in my home and on the job as a carpenter/stagehand. It's Indispensable for the once-in-a-while electrician or homeowner whether he/she is adding a single outlet or upgrading a new kitchen. Working with this book will give you confidence in the safety, utility, and re-salability of your project. Nothing extraneous, excellent index, gender friendly. No condescension.
The illustrations are the best in the business, and there are an awful lot of fancy wiring books to choose from. The precise (and time honored) diagrams and carefully edited text provide the reader with the information needed to do a good, safe, and efficient job.

Forester and Graham Greene bring their power of narrative to tragic themes, while Eric Linklater asserts his claim on poetic fantasy. The volume also contains characteristic stories by H.E. Bates, V.S. Pritchett, William Plomer, John Moore, Christopher Sykes, William Sansom, Fred Urquhart, and Nigel Kneale.
