An enthralling read for technies and non-techies alike

What impresses me the most about this Blockchain book is how it relates this technology back to current trends in banking, fintech, and how society interacts with technology. All of these things are changing as a result of Blockchain and most people have no idea. The "sharing economy" (think AirBnB, Uber, etc.) is a prime example. This is a major focus in one of the chapters where the author clearly and methodically lays out how Blockchain is completely disrupting even already disruptive services.

Books about technology always walk a fine line between being informative and being boring. This book manages to be detailed while still remaining entertaining for a broad audience. I had some background knowledge of Blockchain and Bitcoin already when I bought this book but I think even if I didn't I still would have understood just about everything the author describes. One of the chapters does get quite technical but it is explained clearly enough that I think even someone still very new to Blockchain would understand at least 90% of what the author is talking about.

The last chapter of the book is the best in my opinion as this is where the author ties everything together and lays out a variety of plausible use cases for Blockchain driven technology in the next few years. There are also lots of examples in that chapter, and throughout the book really, of how current early adopters are using Blockchain to increase efficiency, eliminate middlemen, and offer a wide range of services that were previously not possible without a technology like Blockchain.

The Blockchain Disruption is one of the best tech books I have read. It is fast-paced, it is interesting, and most importantly it thoroughly details a new technology that will define the next generation of technological evolution.

Best of the Blockchain books

I've picked up several of the most popular Blockchain books such as the one by the Tapscott father and son, and read them with mild dissatisfaction. Some would only scratch the surface while others would randomly go down one rabbit hole or another leaving the big picture mostly unexplored.

When the book by Summers was finally released a few weeks ago I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I had the opportunity to see the author speak at a conference a couple of years ago and was impressed by his vision for the future of Blockchain and his way of applying his expertise about Blockchain to the real world to see how this technology will shape our future.

I could not have enjoyed this book more, and in my opinion it is the best of the current bunch of Blockchain books. It is written in a way that is completely understandable for someone of even the most modest technical background, however it never shies away from getting deep into the technical details of how Blockchain technology functions.

What I love most about this book is that it is relentlessly focused on what Blockchain will do here in the real world. This isn't a book that is out to theorize for the sake of theorizing, or dicuss purely technical qualities while leaving their life-altering impact aside. This is one of the very fe Blockchain books that does justice to this amazing technology by exploring the true context in which this technology will operate and offering a credible look into what the world will look like in the not too distant future.

Widespread implementation of Blockchain is right around the corner, and it is going to be huge. No author I know of articulates the true impact of Blockchain better than Summers. If you are only going to read one Blockchain book, definitely make this one!

I'm impressed of this great guidebook! This book is a perfect read for people who barely have an idea about block chain but heard and wanted to learn about it. This book is a must read to understand and have ideas on all the promises of the Blockchain Technology and what is already being done today. To me, this is such an very useful book that I can highly recommend to others.

implement and enjoy retirement in it's various forms

As an advocate for financial literacy and a well-planned retirement I was very impressed with this book (received it hot off the press on 4/18/16). It is not a book on shilling must have stocks or "the one investment system" so often the premis of investment books. This book covers practically all of the areas one needs to plan, implement and enjoy retirement in it's various forms.

I don't know the author and have no agenda with the book. I just felt compelled to write this as it contains a large amount of useful information and ideas. I read the three hundred pages in three days and will re-read it as a reference for the future. No pics, no glitzy graphs - just great information in a readable format.

Heartbreaking, gut wrenching

I'm sitting here trying to decide how to review this. I enjoyed 95% of this story....but that one gut wrenching part caused me to sit the book down for 3 days and decide whether or not I wanted to finish. My heart tore into pieces and it was a place I was not sure I wanted to go.
In the end, the need to finish this story won out and I'm glad it did. After reading inhibitions I was excitedly awaiting the release of unrestricted, where can this story go (I don't want to ruin the end of book 1 or anything in this story so I'm being vague). Kimberly Bracco has taken this story, this couple, to places beyond your expectations to see if they can come together at the end for an HEA. The emotion dragged out of you, hate, sadness, rage, happiness, udder dispare etc its a ride you will not soon forget. For that reason solely this is a 5 star read. For the big ugly tears this is a 5 star read. This us the type of story that will sit with you for a long time. I had to talk it out with a friend of mine and until I started writing this review was still uncertain of how I felt.
Well done Ms. Bracco on an emotion evoking great book.

Surprising and speaks to your heart!

So... you have to read book one! Not only because it's epic, but also because you'll be confused if you start with book two and won't have the feels and the love for Ashley and Tanner that you need to appreciate book two (Unrestricted).

***Some spoilers***

Unrestricted picks up where Inhibitions left off. Tanner, Tanner, Tanner... you silly man you! Honestly, to walk away from a woman who you had to know was faithful and to be so spiteful with your words before you do so?? MAN!

Ashley does NOT forgive easily, not where Tanner is concerned. She ends up with two jobs to cover what NOT having him around will require. Which results in the ultimate heartbreak and a car crash. I did NOT see that coming and was not only completely SHOCKED but very saddened by it. Their poor baby!!!

The middle of this book was crazy sad. I honestly think a disclaimer should be in there. Not because I couldn't handle it, but I was so SHOCKED and it messed with me a little :( Totally doesn't ruin the story, but it was just so sad and I was unprepared at 1am.

Time goes by, therapy visits are made. It's just so hard to watch Ashley struggle. At first I was feeling annoyed by her lack of letting Tanner in, because I love Tanner. But when I think about it rationally and from a real point, then I realize what she experienced was REAL and true to herself. If someone goes through the $h!t storm she did and doesn't end up a little "mental" and mean... well then I don't know, but she had real reactions and she spoke to me in a way that was sad and endearing. I LOVE ASHLEY! She is so strong.

The end, you'll have to read, but it makes all the tears YOU WILL SHED worth it!

Delivered Kindle edition not what was ordered

Bought digital version of 5th edition in May 2015. Edition delivered to my Kindle for iPad is labeled "5th Edition" but is actually the text of the 4th edition from 1999. Amazon's kindle online preview shows the proper 5th edition from 2007. The book itself is excellent but I'm disappointed by Amazon's substitution of an out-of-date edition.
Updated March 10, 2016: Amazon kindly issued a refund when the problem was brought to their attention. Great customer service!

Excellent overview

I am an investment analyst and used this book to get up to speed on an unfamiliar industry. I found it to be clear, well organized, and containing all the info I needed to understand the dynamics driving the business and the lingo. There was more engineering and scientific info than I needed for my purposes, but it was useful to thumb through those chapters to get a high level understanding of the issues. Highly recommended for people new to the industry.

Very good information for a non-chemical engineer working in a refinery. After the first few, Each chapter pretty much stands alone so you can read just what you need when you need it. I have loaned it to several other engineers in my group.

In writing this important book, Oliva combined her personal experiences with responses from the Solitary Mainstream Project, a survey that she conducted of deaf and hard of hearing adults who attended public school. Oliva matched her findings with current research on deaf students in public schools and confirmed that hearing teachers are ill-prepared to teach deaf pupils, they don’t know much about hearing loss, and they frequently underestimate deaf children. Author’s Note

Children of My Heart was the first title I envisioned for this book. In just four words, this phrase describes the depth of feeling I have for all deaf and hard of hearing children. Living with my father, who also had a hearing loss, intimately connected me with the controversies surrounding sign language, deaf history, and deaf children. Our lives were and are inextricably tied, and it is curious how we chose such different ways of dealing with our hearing loss. My father remained in the hearing world his entire life. He laughed when others laughed and smirked when others smirked. Not only that, but I feel certain he knew of the Deaf community, because he worked for almost thirty years at the New York Daily News, and I know from my conversations with other Deaf people that many Deaf men worked there during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Yet, my father never once mentioned this to me.

I saw the impact of his struggles (and my struggles) on my mother, my siblings, their children, and even our extended family. My heart aches for relationships that were marred by a lack of knowledge and understanding. My heart aches for never having known my hard of hearing grandfather and great-grandmother. But most of all, my heart aches for deaf children today, especially those who are solitaires in hearing schools.

On one of those few occasions where my father and I did discuss hearing loss, he suggested that I "do something to help people who cannot hear." When he died on my forty-sixth birthday, the drive to produce this book began to grow from embers to fire. I began to feel compelled to produce a work that would illuminate the issues over which he and I had so passionately disagreed. I could not understand how we could differ so much in our perspectives concerning our shared uniqueness. I felt that he denied himself and our family so much joy by refusing to learn sign language. His recalcitrance greatly saddened me. I wanted my work to shed light on our opposing ideas about deafness. Frankly, I wanted to produce a work that would help others avoid what I perceived as the pitfalls my father stumbled into and from which he never escaped.

I reached out to adults who were also mainstreamed as solitaires for all or most of their K–12 years. I invited them to correspond with me electronically about their experiences, a task that they gladly accepted. They concurred that the labels, solitary and solitaire, encapsulated their experiences. I collected and analyzed their writings, shared my analyses with them, and included many of their comments in this book.

Over the years, I have met people who would put me on a pedestal, declaring that I was somehow unique, better, different than "those other deaf people." In their effort to lift me up, they put others down, albeit unintentionally. I want very much to make the point that my story is not unique. Every solitaire made their own unique points. I am deeply grateful for their willingness to share their stories, enthusiasm, and love for deaf and hard of hearing children with me, and with you.

Best true restructuring book

I must have read about 80% of all books on Amazon related to restructuring and turnarounds. The last book before this one presented a fairly common narrative. Even though it was written by a respected restructuring expert from a large consulting firm that specializes in turnarounds, the author still spent the vast majority of his time talking in generalities about such subjects as the need to balance divergent view points, treating all stakeholders with respect, imagining new futures, to be lean without being mean and to rebuild trust even going so far as to define an equation for trust. Missing of course was any real advice, guidance or financial models for how to actually restructure a firm facing a real, immediate crisis.

This book, Corporate Restructuring: from cause analysis to execution, stands out as being far superior to the rest. In essence its more of a practitioner's guide in a similar way as Rosenbaum and Pearl's excellent book on investment banking dispenses with grandiose theory and fluff in favor of practical solid tools for getting the job done.

This book provides methods for diagnosing common problems, illustrates how to build simple practical financial models to test the diagnoses and then how to set and achieve hard targets providing a wide range of tools for restructuring the entire enterprise.

Broadly speaking, the author focuses on 5 main areas - cash management, working capital to generate cash internally, profitability analysis tracing margins to the different layers of the firm from divisions, business units, customers, product lines and contracts to practical approaches for restructuring costs and even headcount, which is an often used tool for distressed firms that no one wants to talk about in-depth. He also spends quite a bit of time on the revenue generation side including pricing strategies, customer service and ways to increase sales from existing customers.

What was especially helpful was the number of examples and spreadsheets the author included that clearly illustrate how to perform the analysis being discussed. He even includes a sample project timeline for restructuring the firm and necessary preliminary steps like forming a turnaround committee and building a map of the entire organization. My one complaint however is that towards the later chapters on cash management he didn't provide this same level of detail and omitted examples of daily cash reports, disbursement calendars and especially modeling week to week cash flows.

I had seen this book on Amazon for awhile before taking the plunge. With no prior reviews, a high price tag and a relatively unknown author, I had quite a few doubts. I was pleasantly surprised to find the most practical straightforward book on this subject matter I have read so far. Highly recommended for restructuring experts looking to broaden their skills as well as managers forced into the role for the first time.

Other notes: I read the kindle version of this book, which worked out well. The charts were easy to read, the table of contents didn't include page numbers but did have active links and the index didn't have active links but surprisingly did contain page numbers unlike most kindle textbooks.

Excellent book!

This book was my introduction to this topic and I found it to be highly practical. I also found the material to be relatively easy to understand and I quickly became excited thinking about implementing these ideas. If you're on the fence, I highly recommend this book!

Full disclosure: I took Prof. David Vance's Corporate Restructuring course at Rutgers and I greatly admire the man. It is my view that this fact did not affect my review.

STILL AMONG THE BEST BOOKS EVER ON INNOVATION!

This was one of the first books that I read on innovation, and it continues to be a favorite.

It's an easy read yet packed with excellent information for someone wanting the "big picture" on innovation as well as a good reference book. Readers shouldn't let the length of this book scare them. Its almost 300 pages don't need to be read in any particular order, and all of the information in it is so meaningful and written so well, that readers will likely want more after having read the entire book.

Innovation to the Core is one of the few books that I've read more than once, and yet I continue to come back for more. I'm still in awe as to how the authors covered so much ground without it feeling overwhelming.

There are a lot of books on innovation on the market today, but this one takes a deep dive and underscores the importance of a systemic and sustainable approach. If I could give it a higher rating than 5 stars, I would!

Excellent primer on corporate innovation

I found this book on a recommended reading list about corporate innovation. I have little education in business management and am not familiar with the literature, but I found this book to be an excellent primer on how large organizations can embed innovation as a core value and process. Instead of relegating innovation to a small R&D cell, the authors advocate building a custom-tailored innovation architecture to embed innovation throughout the organization. My only critique, which is hardly fair, is that the book was published in 2008. I'm left wondering if the intervening five years would change any of the authors' views and recommendations.

Bought and returned. How many chapters can we have dealing with the refactoring of a random price generator? The editing was poor, as there are numerous errors, and why on earth would you switch font sizes in code snippets? Makes it all but unreadable.
