we were delighted with how the cake turned out and are grateful ...

As the mom of two young vegan kids, I was in desperate need for cake decorating ideas and recipes for birthday parties. This is SUCH a gorgeous book, and it gave me and my co-collaborator the confidence to attempt my most ambitious cake venture yet: a kitty cat cake for my daughter's birthday. The coconut cake itself was yummy, but I botched the fondant and sugar paste by buying/using the wrong kind of palm oil (it was marketed as "sustainable" but was red and stinky!) The fondant wasn't usable so my co-collaborator ended up whipping up a quick buttercream frosting instead, but the sugar paste was still usable and we fashioned a cute kitty out of it, which was inspired by a Pinterest post I came across.

All in all, we were delighted with how the cake turned out and are grateful for the inspiration/guidance. The book contained tips and decorating tricks I never would have thought of.

My request to the author for her NEXT book is to include fondant and sugar paste recipes that don't use palm oil since a lot of people in my vegan/animal rights community (myself included) try to avoid/minimize consumption of it. I would also love to see some kids cakes photos! I know she would do an incredible job with cakes for children.

Great book to get inspired and baking.

This book is fantastic. As a chef, I appreciate the concise instructions and how-to photography. The step by step instructions are fairly straight forward to follow with a little practice.
Secondly, as a culinary artist.. I have to say the style, imagination, and beauty of the cakes are amazing. It's takes a true talent to create these works of art.
But regardless of how much skill you have, it's a beautiful book to have for the inspirational and imaginative artistry that goes these cakes.
Learning one step at a time.... this book is helping me get there. I totally recommend having this in your cooking reference library.

The creativity of the recipes and the designs of "Pure Artistry" is a must have for every kitchen! It gives you step by step instructions with accurate recipes from start to finish with each cake.Recipes are easy to follow and how to step by step decorating instructions are clear. I feel like Emily Lael Aumiller is right in my kitchen with me baking cakes and desserts!! I look forward to taking some of her classes in the next year!! Also I have shared her "Pure Artistry" for weddings, showers, and birthday gifts.

Another Potential Series? Please!

As he has in his Adrian English, Holmes & Moriarty, Fair Game, Dangerous Grounds and I Spy series, master of mystery Josh Lanyon has grabbed us again with two completely different protagonists who fall instantly in lust, and then just can't figure out how to complete the circle to like and love without getting themselves almost killed along the way.

This one takes place in remote Oregon, where the town of Nearby has suddenly found itself in the middle of a mystery, or two, thanks to the instinct of its police chief, Frankie (a middle-aged lady), who has two deputies, one of whom, Ron Haskell, is as laid back as they come, and gay as a goose but not outwardly (sort of a mid-sized and toned down lumberjack type). He and his straight footloose and fancy free cop partner, Zeke, are at loose ends when they are assigned to pick up and work with two FBI agents who've flown in from Los Angeles to check out what chief Frankie believes could be a local link to a series of serial killings that have plagued the I-5 corridor for more than 20 years. One of those agents is the blond, toned, and spectacularly gorgeous Adam Darling, whose female partner is so similar in "composition" to him that Rob and Zeke immediately dub them Ken and Barbie.

That's where the kid's games stop.

This is a very neatly plotted, twist-and-turn Lanyon tour de force which concentrates on hiding clues from its cast and reader just as well as all his other series. The explosive beginning and hot-and-cold segues in the relationship between Rob and Adam leave you out on a hook until the very end--a very surprising end all around.

Along the way you will learn a lot about the Native American culture of the Northwest, the attitudes of the usual gang of stereotypical small-town characters, and the way mid-30s lonely gay men eventually have to face the future, with or without hope. I think Lanyon is giving us a clue in the ending of this one, and one would hope he's got another couple of adventures percolating for two very different, yet seriously compatible, men.

Thrilling, gripping mystery from an excellent author

I just finished reading Winter Kill and I’m feeling tremendously satisfied because, hands down, Josh Lanyon is so very good at what he does. And it's always lovely to see someone being amazingly skillful in his job.

This is a book about deputy sheriff Rob Haskell and FBI agent Adam Darling trying to solve murders which rapidly grow in number as the story continues. There seems to be a serial killer on loose. But that's definitely not all this story is about!

I enjoyed the sinister feeling the prologue threw over the book. And how the playful, joyful sparks of Rob and Adam’s first night together collides and mixes with the dark chase of a serial killer! The author really gives food for all our senses while walking us through cold, pine smelling landscape filled with sodden autumn leaves in the remote town of Nearby. There's a lot of delightful, sarcastic dialog and even a couple of small cross-over moments with Lanyon's All's Fair series. And it wouldn't be a Josh Lanyon book, if it didn't also have many poetic, thought-provoking images such as ”like the first time you saw butterflies covering carrion” and ”noticed soft, white snow angels in a graveyard”.

I really fell for the two main characters. I like how Adam is the voice of reason and how Rob acts more based on emotion. I like the city-boy-meets-wilderness aspect of the story. There is something irresistible about the dynamics between these two men. At the first glance they seem to be pretty much opposite personalities from each other, with very different way of thinking and acting. But… when you get to know them a bit better you realize how much in common they actually have. Their principals, their goals are the same (in work and in life in general). They’re just both approaching their principals and goals differently. I like how persistent Rob is and how analytically Adam thinks. And I like how their traits start to evolve towards each other during the story.

Near the end of the book there's an outburst of Rob’s that made my heart turn into an ice-cold snowball inside my chest. But I do love how we learn so much of both characters during these arguments between them. There are so many scenes that are like goldmines into the main characters’ personas. Glimpses into their past, telltales of what nuances in their character originate from what has happened to them in the past life. And what nuances are related to their hopes and dreams and what they believe in. I loved finding these delicately, skillfully, beautifully planted clues to who these men really are.

Josh Lanyon masterfully kept all the strings in his trustworthy hands throughout the story and made at least this reader to change her mind about primary suspect(s) for several times — all the way to the end. This mystery sure was a tricky one! I loved the complexity of it and the fact that the crimes were spread throughout such a long timespan. I throughly enjoyed how the author had sprinkled so many possible clues around and also gave us a few of those wonderful "Ah-ha!" moments near the end — the moments when the reader can feel herself as clever as an FBI agent! :-)

In the end Winter Kill left me with some "reason versus emotion” pondering. Both objectively thinking and spontaneous action helped to achieve positive, satisfying outcomes in this story. I find it intriguing. I find it real. I find it... reassuring. I find it as one of the hardest balancing acts in life.

Thank you for yet another great book, Mr. Lanyon. This one was like that wildflower growing from a crack in the pavement an inch from Adam’s nose — meaningful in so many ways.

bicker like children, and end up in bed

Perhaps I have read too many Josh Lanyon books in too short a time span. They are starting to blur into one. Still it is hard to miss the ubiquitous prickly hero, dealing (poorly) with a new partner and/or former lover years after the affair went south. We all know they will be thrown together on a case, bicker like children, and end up in bed. Lanyon really needs to find a new trope for his leads. The mysteries are decent, but I can't help but feel I've already read each new book because the hero is a copy of the previous one, right down to his description of sex, and how pleasurable it is, always "needing" to bottom.
All that said, I will probably continue to read Lanyon, but will put more time between books.

Weight a losing battle

If you have ever truly tried to lose weight you know it has to begin in your mind. What you say to yourself and about yourself has a lot to do with success. I already knew that. But Helmstetter has put so much depth into it and presented ways to accomplish what we want and need to do to lose weight. Easy and interesting reading. If you even think you may have your mind ready to lose weight this is a good good book. Recommend.

GREAT book. It has a lot of great imformation and will help a person never have to struggle with weight again if you will implement what they say. It is written in an interesting manner do I ever got bored! Maybe the world would be a lot thinner if everyone would read this book!

An Enormous Blessing

My mom advised me to start reading this book 2-3 weeks before my wife and I were married last summer. I read the first 100 pages voraciously in one evening (two weeks before our wedding) and have been reading snippets here and there since a few weeks after the wedding. I finished it today, and I thank God for providing me insight into the wonderful purpose and joy found in my sexual union to my wife. I encourage you to study this book prayerfully and ask God to bring you and your partner closer to Himself and to each other as husband and wife. God bless you!

Note: The book appears to be directed largely at husbands and soon-to-be husbands and instructs soon-to-be husbands to read the first 100 pages of the book in the last few weeks before the wedding (to prepare for the wedding night) and to save the rest of the book for after the wedding day. I encourage readers to follow this instruction.

Steven Brooks develops parallels between nuclear energy and the power gained through fasting and prayer in his book "Fasting and Prayer: God's Nuclear Power."

The book is packed with:

Never Outdated: Fasting and Prayer For Today

I have heard and seen Steven Brooks on Sid Roth and read his book on angels. I could not wait to sit down and read this book. Steven not only gives scriptural backing needed for fasting and prayer, but also gives numerous examples of what happens when we fast and pray. His take on Franklin Hall's comment about fasting and prayer being like nuclear power is commendable. He eloquently elaborates on Hall's assertion and really makes fasting come alive.

Pastors and speakers, there are quotes by Charles Finney, Dwight L. Moody, Andrew Murray, John Wesley, A.A. Allen, Johnathan Edwards, and Martin Luther. Steven Brooks walks in a miracle-filled life, yet hungers for the still small voice of God. Quotes mean nothing to Steven without the power of God backing up his ministry.

I like the information on The Apostle Thomas, who ministered in India, modern day Pakistan, Iran, and even China. Steven visited the cave in which The Apostle Thomas lived before he was martyred. There he saw memorial signs detailing the healing of the blind, the lame, the lepers, and those who were raised form the dead. Awesome!

Steven tells us great stories about Job and Charles Spurgeon. He also includes a journal on a 21-day fast. I would love to see him write another abook on fasting, telling the stories of what has happened in his church after a called fast for his conregation.

I can't say enough about this book. This is a book to re-read over and over until the scriptures and accompanying stories move from your head into your heart. Don't be surprised to see miracles in your life if you do! Get this book and share this book! Jesus is coming soon! You know you need breakthroughs! FAST AND PRAY.

Better Than Expected

I ordered this after seeing him talk on Sid Roth. He believes the power of fasting to reach spiritual breakthrough. I felt this book would help me reach a greater anointing since I have encountered strong manifestations of the spirit that can't be denied at certain ministries. Steve shares some of his supernatural visitations from Jesus and miracles (which I trust are true), and from other saints who fasted. He outlines how to fast and gives biblical verses. He doesn't go overboard on the biblical verses which I liked. He mentioned the necessary ones and a few others relating to what he was talking about. He recommends you should drink water or juice when fasting, and thinks that Jesus drank water in the desert during his 40 day fast. I don't know if I agree with this, since the bible doesn't say he drank anything. He gives an example where a saint passed out when he tried an extended fast without water. But he also gives a supernatural example of a saint,Padro Pio, who fasted all the time but weighed 190 lbs, and actually gained weight when fasting. This book outweighed my expectations and gave me a good perception how to fast. At end he gives a 21 day journal of one of his personal fasts. This is good because it shows his honesty and human weaknesses. He doesn't give a fake view that it will be easy and all your dreams will come true. He does guarantee that when combined with a prayer life, earnestly seeking God, it will draw you closer into God's presence.
