About the Author
David M. Newman earned his B.A. from San Diego State University in 1981 and his graduate degrees from the University of Washington in Seattle (M.A. 1984, PhD 1988). After a year at the University of Connecticut, David went to DePauw University in 1989 and has been there ever since. David teaches courses in Contemporary Society, Deviance, Mental Illness, Family, Social Psychology, and Research Methods. He has published numerous articles on teaching and has presented research papers on the intersection of gender and power in intimate relationships. Recently most of his scholarly activity has been devoted to writing and revising several books, including Sociology: Exploring the Architecture of Everyday Life (SAGE, 2014); Identities and Inequalities: Exploring the Intersections of Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality (McGraw-Hill, 2012); and Families: A Sociological Perspective (McGraw-Hill, 2009). He is currently working on a book-length manuscript that examines the cultural meaning, institutional importance, and social limitations of “second chance” narratives in everyday life.

Not good science

The first comment I need to make about why this is a one star review, is that it is an infantalizing text. I know the target audience is 18 year-olds taking Sociology 101 for the first time (something I definitely am not), and so needs to be easily understood; however this book is written for people who apparently have no life experience. If you are a 10 year-old with a high school reading aptitude this book is for you (except see below).

The next issue relates to who I am and why I read this book. I am by education and profession a physicist, I possess a doctorate in physics and for balance another in history. I have spent most of the last two decades using my free time to find and read social science papers which served as the basis of news stories that seemed off to me. What I consistently found was that the research in these papers was atrocious. They always posses clear and obvious methodological errors, lack of proper variable control, small and/or unrepresentative sample sizes (the W.E.I.R.D, problem as well as an over reliance on undergraduates as subjects), circular reasoning, desired conclusions being assumed as priors, lack of reproducibility and/or falsifiablity, and propagandist agenda pushing (keep in mind I often agree with the agenda, but it's still bad science). As a result I've become fairly hostile to the social sciences, believing they are a refuge for people with an axe to grind, but no interest in the truth. Recently I decided to test that hypothesis, by reading introductory text books in each of the social science fields, to see if the problems exist there as well. I have been surprised by most of the books I've read, in which the topic is treated lucidly and scientifically and the very problems I am concerned about are addressed, and I have been reconsidering my position on the lack of scientific rigor in the social sciences. This book has been the sole exception, it posses every failing I find in those offending social science papers, and seems to revel in flaunting them. This may be a product of this particular author, or a flaw in the field of Sociology itself, I intend at a future date to try and find another Sociology text and read it for comparison. In any event this book should be avoided.

The book is fantastic! I give the book 5 STARS! Yes, it's a textbook, but it's well written, contemporary, and the author has a wonderful sense of humor. When was the last time someone, having read a textbook, told you this? I thought so. Alas, receiving this book was a lengthier process than expected, and I was not exactly happy. The book IS GREAT!

SO HAPPY!

I needed this book for my Sociology class, I went to the school's bookstore, and it was for $43. I went online and its for $26 after tax, shipping and everything. I saved $17, but was afraid of it showing up too late since the arrival date was from three days before the term started to three weeks after, however, I just got the book today.. SIX DAYS BEFORE THE EARLIEST ESTIMATED ARRIVAL. It was very well packaged and I can honestly say I've never been more happy for a delivery. Exactly what I needed, but cheaper and quickly arrived. Would definitely recommend this sender to anyone!

Fun visual explanations any designer will enjoy

I've been choosing and working with fonts since the late 70s and I have dozens of books on type…�but this book is different. Through many fun illustrations, anecdotes, and facts, the author tells the story of how fonts and typography affect us. Some of it is rather light, with disconnected sections, but it's the kind of book you can open anywhere and find something interesting.

Integrating social, cultural, economic, and political history, this is a study of the factors that grounded―or swayed―the loyalties of non-Spaniards living under Spanish rule on the southern frontier. In particular, Andrew McMichael looks at the colonial Spanish administration’s attitude toward resident Americans. The Spanish borderlands systems of slavery and land ownership, McMichael shows, used an efficient system of land distribution and government patronage that engendered loyalty and withstood a series of conflicts that tested, but did not shatter, residents’ allegiance. McMichael focuses on the Baton Rouge district of Spanish West Florida from 1785 through 1810, analyzing why resident Anglo-Americans, who had maintained a high degree of loyalty to the Spanish Crown through 1809, rebelled in 1810.

The book contextualizes the 1810 rebellion, and by extension the southern frontier, within the broader Atlantic World, showing how both local factors as well as events in Europe affected lives in the Spanish borderlands. Breaking with traditional scholarship, McMichael examines contests over land and slaves as a determinant of loyalty. He draws on Spanish, French, and Anglo records to challenge scholarship that asserts a particularly “American” loyalty on the frontier whereby Anglo-American residents in West Florida, as disaffected subjects of the Spanish Crown, patiently abided until they could overthrow an alien system. Rather, it was political, social, and cultural conflicts―not nationalist ideology―that disrupted networks by which economic prosperity was gained and thus loyalty retained.

One of the most impressive achievements of Atlantic Loyalties is to establish a road map for studying West Florida in particular and the southern borderlands in general. McMichael offers an important counterpart to the standard narrative of the system of British slavery that began in the upper South before heading South and West. Instead, we learn about a more complex and dynamic process through which enslavement and freedom, plantation agriculture and frontier settlement, regional connections and international tensions overlapped to shape life in North America.

McMichael's book is a powerful argument for writing borderlands history from the ground up, concentrating on what actually happened in a given place and fitting that place into an Atlantic framework. how the Florida panhandle became a part of the new United States

McMichael's "Atlantic Loyalties" makes a good study of how a region became part of the United States differently from how practically all of the rest of the U. S. was formed. The jingoistic settlement of Texas preceding the Mexican War; displacement of Native American tribes; and administrative steps leading to statehood as with California and other Western states are familiar ways regions have been incorporated into the United States. By contrast, the Florida panhandle controlled by Spain became a part of the nation by a long, winding course by which the Anglo-Americas who made up the majority of the population changed loyalties.

Part of the Spanish territory of western Florida almost from the earliest days of its settlement, Anglo-Americans were not essentially dissatisfied with being subject to Spanish rule. The Anglo-Americans were economically successful; they made a community within the territory; the Spanish rule was benign, with some of the governors, notably Charles Louis Boucher de Grand Pre, popular. Neither victory in America's War of Independence nor the Louisiana Purchase turned the west Floridian Anglo-Americans' allegiance from the Spanish to the Americans. However, each of these momentous historical events inevitably contributed to the eventual change in loyalties.

Continuing United States' troubles with Britain leading to the War of 1812 and conflict among the European countries of Britain, Spain, and France with the rise of Napoleon having some global dimension also unsettled the circumstances in west Florida so as to contribute to the change. Outside American agitators trying to bring the area into the United States; Spanish land speculators; and developments in the Caribbean region were localized factors which along with the larger historical events, made the change of loyalty virtually inevitable. It was only a matter of time.

What is remarkable is not that the loyalties of the Anglo-Americans shifted, but that they took so long to do so; that it took such a buildup of historical and local events for them to do so. After victory in the Revolutionary War and the Louisiana Purchase, for example, Americans rowdily and sometimes violently took over some locales.

McMichael, associate professor of history at Western Kentucky University, does not attribute the change in allegiance from Spain to the United States to any single cause; neither to any confluence of a few. He shows how the effects of historical developments and the practicalities and feelings of human lives intermingle in certain veins of history.

SCWCD cannot be aimed for a 100% if you have not referred to the API documentation or the JSP and Servlet Specifications. But would you really like to go through such humongous documentation within a short span of time? I hear many no's cried out loud. But what if I say you would get a compact series of chapters and exam wise listed topics with the API information just perfect for the exam and Specification filtered out with only the exam relevant aspects, then this the book to go for. I wouldn't have been able to score a 90+ score seriously speaking without this book. Charles Lyons has prepared the book with a lot of effort of perfectly scanning up to the API level details and also packaging it with the specification information so compactly that you don't get bored reading it. He has maintained the flow so accurately that your questions will immediately be answered just as they get raised in your mind. Don't try to read through the chapters in between because the flow of the chapters will be clear only when you start it from the beginning. I assure that reading this book won't make you touch the specifications nor the API documentations at all. Even I didn't!

The best part of the book is it acts not only as a SCWCD study companion but also as a Reference book for future use since it has additional chapters for the updates that have happened in the recent past in JSP and Servlets. The one thing I would reprimand in using this book is don't try to solve tests provided at the end of each chapter since they are literally tough! You need to have your brain super charged to solve the tests since they cover an amazing depth of knowledge. But on the lines of SCWCD you won't get such difficult questions so it is better if you stick to the tests provided in the earlier 2 books. --SCWCD - The 3 Steps to Success by Nitin Pai

1. Very easy on reading - zero noise, wonderful narration and simply explained.
2. Concepts explained in detailed - a handy reference, even after passing the exam.
3. Chapter on EL,Std. Action, Tag File, Tag deployment and JSP Document - are really good.

The first few chapters 1~6 related to servlet technology (some have more of API than explanations..), security and design patterns - these chapters can be easily covered from any other source as well (Since some details are asmiss as well - so might go through Specs/HFSJ/or HD instead).

About the Author
Charles Lyons is an independent computer consultant based near London, UK, with over five years of programming experience in a wide variety of fields and applications ranging from microprocessors and machine code to the Web, three-dimensional graphics and modelling, and client- and server-side programming using Java. Self-taught, his career began as a Web page designer, hand-coding pages in raw (X)HTML, XML and CSS. His interest quickly spread to the dynamic serving of data, using server-side programming languages like PHP, and eventually onto the Java language. Combining Java Enterprise technology with Web page design just seemed like the thing to do, and so here we are - this book is a culmination of his years of experience with the Web and Java. This book is based on his own experiences, and mostly from the process of learning from his mistakes and misconceptions!

Great Resource!

This is a complete, no nonsense guide to the material on the Sun Certified Web Component Developer (SCWCD) exam. It is well written, and easy to read.

Last week I passed the 310-084 exam with a score of 92%. This book was one of my chief resources in preparing. I bought this book on impulse (I already had the other three big books on preparation for the SCWCD). I was pleasantly surprised. The book covers all the material on the exam in a straightforward way. For example, I found the description of deploying web applications (deployment descriptor elements) very helpful.

Readers with no background in Servlets and JSP may find the material here too detailed for an introduction. These readers may be want to look at Head First Servlets and JSP: Passing the Sun Certified Web Component Developer Exam (Brain-Friendly Guides). Once they have the big picture from the "Head First" book, this would be a great second book, filling the details needed to pass the test.

Like most exam preparation books, there are questions at the end of each chapter (over 300 total). These questions make sure that help the reader make sure that they understand the material (these questions are somewhat easier than ones on the exam). Here, each answer has a complete explanation. I found it very useful to read ALL of the answers, not just the ones I missed. This helped me find things that I misunderstood, or once in a while pointed out when I got right answer for the wrong reason.

The book contains additional material (beyond the exam objectives) on methods and topics that are useful in real world web development. Also, the final section of the book contains a description of differences between J2EE 1.5 and Java EE 5. This added material is clearly labeled, so that candidates can skip it during final preparation.

Preparing for one of Sun's certification exams will never be really easy or fun (they're too hard for that), but if you have committed yourself to passing, this book is a great resource.

want to pass the exam? use this book

I passed SCWCD 5 with the score 89%. This book is definitely necessary for your certification studying. Although the content of this book is a little bit boring (very few images, full of text, not so easy to understand if you do not have so much fundamental knowledge on JSP and servlet), it is still the best book you must read if you want to pass the exam as soon as possible. I actually have another book to help prepare the test, but finally i recognized that I have to totally digest this book before I take the test.

the only book you should read for SCWCD5

I had just 2 weeks to pass the exam.Believe me I do have a coding experience but to pass the SCWCD 5 you still need to read the book.I read it twice n cleared exam in first attempt.Do solve the practise exam .This book puts the exact syllabus required for exam in neatly oriented fashion.
I loved this book & will 100% recommend to others.
