The Green Letters: Principles of Spiritual Growth, by Miles J. Stanford

As the first book in a series of five on the Christian life, The Green Letters emphasizes both the doctrinal and experiential aspects of maturing in Christian living. The book is grounded in Scripture and enlivened by quotations from noted authors. "Not I, but Christ" is its theme. The author makes this arresting statement regarding the dynamics of the Christian life: "God . . . doesn't intend to help us live the Christian life. Immaturity considers the Lord Jesus a Helper. Maturity knows Him to be life itself." Perhaps the greatest drama in the world is the slow and subtle growth of character in the Christian. Beauty of character can be developed only through years of reflection and experience in the Word of God as the life of Christ is increasingly lived by faith. The Christian life is a healthy, robust kind of life. It advances also through trials, for in one who has faith even suffering is not wasted, but becomes a means for increasing spiritual vigor and strength.

small book with lots of content
By MPS
I was surprised by how much I got out of this little book. I'm actually reading it for the second time. It's no fluff, just meat. The author uses many examples from the realm of nature (ie trees, seeds) to help explain some Christian concepts that are pretty hard to grasp otherwise. If you are looking for a light read this is not it. But the chapters are short with lots to think about. Could be used like a devotional book, reading one chapter a day. The language style is old, but is well worth the effort made to understand.

The main problem with MJS's teachings
By J. Moore
The main problem is that too few Christians know of the Pauline basis for these teachings (Stanford's Calvinistic comments could well have been left outside, though, even if one agrees with them) and so do not give them to the younger believers who most need to hear them. I know Stanford addresses this in one of his articles, saying that these teachings may be beyond the understanding of the young in Christ. Perhaps. But I'd have rather had them told to me up front than to have suffered in the mental and spiritual AGONY of wondering why I still sinned, was I in fact saved, etc. Even if I did not "get it" I believe I would have at least recognized it as Pauline truth and would have slowly grown into it eventually.

Young believers are done a grave disservice by not being told exactly who and what they now are in Christ. An equal disservice is not telling them the flipside: that the old sin nature is not gone but will very much dwell within them for life, just as Paul said, yet victory in Christ IS still possible in their daily walk. Tell them these things UP FRONT so they are not blindsided and discouraged by nothing more than plain ignorance used as a club in the hand of the devil. Of course, the reason they're not told is because most OLDER Christians are just as ignorant of it.

Whatever you do, start out the young knowing exactly what "position vs. condition" means. Explain what Paul meant by reckoning. By the grace of God they'll grow faster, stronger and straighter in the Faith than they otherwise would have done, left to figure it out on their own as I was.

Reply to Kirk Bozeman
By A. Sun
A friend and I talked about Mr. Bozeman's comment via email. His reply to me was truly great and I thought I would share it here. Please note that his comment was not written to be read by anyone but me, so I apologize for his direct and somewhat confrontational language and format. AS

Stanford had some very narrow, "old-school" Dispensational views not held by the mainstream of scholars today (at least the ones I've seen),
(This is an absolutely accurate assessment of Miles' dispensational understanding. His is a classic, Lewis S. Chafer, C. H. Mackintosh, John N. Darby, Patrick Fairbairn dispensational approach to Biblical interpretation. That is not what the current staff of Dallas Seminary or its recent graduates are teaching and following. Theirs is usually called Progressive Dispensationalism.)

and it shows in the way he understood Paul (especially) and the whole of Scripture in light of his writings, and is the undercurrent for this book.
(Again, absolutely true; however, the book is a compilation of letters from his file on subjects that he repeatedly addressed in answer to inquiries from people world-wide who wrote to him for clarification and Biblical understanding.)

(This is more evident in the "Complete" version, but not as evident in the "slim" version, which I feel is a bit deceptive to the reader, since the "slim" is more widely-read.)
This statement is purely based on ignorance. The "slim" version is the first book that Miles wrote in this series under the title Principles of Spiritual Growth. It was a grand primer for a new Christian. Later, that was expanded to The Green Letters, a broader set of letters in answer to more questions than were addressed in Principles of Spiritual Growth. Yet another book was issued called The Red Letters. Those were all combined by the publishers into The Complete Green Letters. Miles originally had his small books printed in Hong Kong and distributed entirely out of his small home office.

Whatever you do with this fact, (The only "fact" that he has mentioned is that Stanford does not embrace the Progressive Dispensational interpretation, but accepts and teaches the Darby, Mackintosh, Newell, Chafer interpretation)

the practical outworking of this ideology ("This ideology" begs for definition. On the surface it appears to mean `that dispensational understanding of the Brethren who defined it' compared with the understanding that is now taught and adopted by more recent teachers and preachers. For practical purposes that would be staff additions at DTS after Chafer's death and others who hold to the ideology of Progressive Dispensationalism, Covenant/Reformed/Calvinistic/Historical Dispensationalism as compared to Doctrinal Dispensationalism as an interpretive system)

for Stanford results in a very unbiblical view of sanctification (which may be defined by . . .?)

that makes it difficult to reconcile (The writer should have added; "that makes it difficult for me to reconcile)

many New Testament passages. It is difficult for me at this point to believe that the apostle Paul would have instructed believers to walk the way that Stanford does: the classic "let go and let God" mentality. (What does the writer object to about "let go and let God"?)

Stanford dresses this in very intelligent writing, drawing a very attractive, powerful picture of his "system". But, pretty as it may be, I now believe this line of thinking to be unbiblical. (He has made a serious claim without example or definition; or, as a lawyer might say; `based on facts not in evidence.')

This kind of teaching (Again, a claim without definition that must be taken as any form of "let go and let God" do His work in you.)

can lead believers to self-deception, replacing repentance, active faith, and active seeking of God with a "seated-in-heaven-spirituality" that is not allowed to examine itself, bordering on perfectionism and deep-seated in esoteric "breaking" experiences that simply will not happen in the life of every believer. (Miles Stanford taught throughout his life and ministry that the Believer's life and walk started with his union with Christ in His death [Romans 6] and his resurrection to new creation life in the risen Jesus. Further, that the source of his life here moved from Earth to Heaven when the Lord ascended 10 days prior to Pentecost and the descent of the Holy Spirit. His life in the Grand Assembly began on Pentecost with the indwelling Holy Spirit, who had positionally sanctified forever the believer from the world and into Jesus the moment he believed, and who now indwells every Believer accepted in the Beloved. Now that I am accepted and forgiven, and that my sins are forgotten forever; it would be more than foolish for me to believe that any thought or act of `repentance' on my part would, or could, move God to do what more on my behalf? All has been done! For the Lord said on the Cross, "It is finished.")

"Active faith"--does that, can that mean anything other than faith which emanates from within oneself? Was it my faith that actuated the grace of God that saved me, or was it the faith of the Only Begotten Son of God in the will of the Father that moved in my life to bring me to salvation? Most assuredly, as Miles himself taught me, it was the will of the Father and the faith of the Son who wrought my salvation in the eternal counsels of the past. So, I have been seated "in Him" since before the foundations of the world. John, in his first general epistle, begs us to clear thinking on this, as he states; "he who says he has no sin deceives himself."

"Active seeking of God"--There is that word "active" again; this time attached to "seeking of God." It appears to mean that there is within man some capacity to turn one's self towards God and `actively' attempt to find and reach Him. If Scripture is to be believed, `there is none righteous, no not one' [Romans 3] and `there is not the [man] that understands, there is not one that seeks after God' [Romans 3:11 Darby]. The alternative to self-searching, self-seeking, pursuit of God is to stop! And, then let God wrap you in His arms at the feet of the risen Savior in Heaven, from where your life flows in torrents of living water; sustaining you until that moment when He comes and claims His Bride and removes Her to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

"Not allowed to examine itself?"--A pitiful bit of fiction at best, an attempt to distract from central issues, perhaps; a failure to read what Miles Stanford consistently wrote, or the expression of one already committed to the Armenian view that man has within him the ability to lay hold of God and claim his salvation based on his self-assessment and relative remorse and repentance. Miles' life was a series that consisted of the Hound of Heaven, hunting him down, finding him out, and dragging him from the mire of brokenness, onto the ground of peace. He cautioned us repeatedly that becoming self-absorbed took us deeper into the woods and away from the light of instruction and growth. That would lead, said he, to self-inflicted pain, and discipline by a loving Father. Better to examine yourself (the very essence of the Lord's Table) to make sure that what you testify to before your brothers and sisters in Christ is your soul bared and His righteousness appropriated.

Be careful with this book! Don't forget that the same Paul who said, "you were made to die to the Law... to bear fruit for God" also said "I beat my body and make it my slave". Again, the same Paul who wrote so much concerning our certainty of and blessing from being "in Christ" said that he was still striving to be found Him, still striving to be conformed to His death, and still striving to be conformed to His resurrection. (But, you missed the point that he was striving against himself, against the Old Sin Nature within to which he died in Christ through union, the conformity that he wished to attain, as so with the resurrection to new creation life of which Christ was the "First fruit")

There is no lack of certainty of heaven or of being presently "in Christ" here in Paul's statements. They simply point to the reality that (Practical or conditional) sanctification is a process that MUST BE "worked out" through faithful obedience as God "works in". It doesn't just happen by "reckoning" once we "get to the end of ourselves" as "The Green Letters" describes. (Thankfully, once I `got to the end of my self by realizing that I died to sin and self, then my Position in Christ became by condition in life through declaring myself to be dead to the power of sin in my life [blessed Reckoning) free from the Law of sin and death, and free to serve God by considering (Reckoning) my life to be expendable in service of my savior--just as my late mentor was finally able to drive into my aging brain. I thank Miles J. Stanford, who is as important to our age and day as was Martin Luther to the Reformation.

Oxford’s fabled streets echo with the names of such key figures in English history as Edmund Halley, John Wycliffe, and John and Charles Wesley. Of more recent times are those of C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and the other members of the renowned literary circle to which they belonged, the Inklings. What would it be like to walk this medieval city’s narrow lanes in the company of such giants of Christian literature, to visit Magdalen College, where Lewis and Tolkien read aloud their works-in-progress to their friends, or the Eagle and Child pub, the Inklings’ favorite gathering place? The lavish photography of this book will introduce you to the fascinating world of the Inklings, matching their words to the places where these friends discussed―and argued over―theology, philosophy, ancient Norse myth, and Old Icelandic, while writing stories that were to become classics of the faith. The Inklings of Oxford will deepen your knowledge of and appreciation for this unique set of personalities. The book also features a helpful map section for taking walking tours of Oxford University and its environs.

Review
The pictures made me want to go to Oxford. The maps and pictures together helped me imagine being there. This book helped me "see" what I had only read of in biographies before. I want to go to Oxford, now even more so, but till I can I have a valuable resource to pull from the shelf anytime I want to see again what I'm reading about in some latest Lewis (or Inkling) biography.

...In short, I would by this book and use it as a resource for studying the Inklings. Until I can get to Oxford myself, images and words can take me there. --Dr. Charlie W. Starr, Program Director, Humanities

Suggest a new title: The Oxford of the Inklings
By Sheri Dillinger
This book takes the reader for a visit to the Oxford of the Inklings, a society that included C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Contemporary and historical photographs are complemented by text that provides context and background information on the various members of the group. This book may have been more appropriately titled The Oxford of the Inklings as it is not a comprehensive history of the Inklings, but rather more of a guide to the places where the Inklings lived, worked and gathered. Inklings fans visiting Oxford will appreciate the maps of walking tours that lead one through the streets of the city and highlight places of interest that relate to this intriguing group of friends.

A Really Great Little Book
By fiber farmer
This is the second of three books I purchased on amigurumi. To be honest, I bought it because the pictures on the front were so adorable that they put me on a hunt for the author on the internet. I found her blog, which is terrific, and then I bought her book. I'm glad I did, because this book is definitely for the beginning crocheter. There are no assumptions that the reader has any more than a rudimentary knowledge of crochet and the directions are very clear.

The patterns are very simple and that's the strength of this book, in my opinion. After making several toys from this book, I was able to make my own "freestyle" patterns. I adapted her hedgehog pattern, along with the donkey pattern from the Kyuuto book (another excellent resource) and made an amigurumi alpaca. Go figure.

Although all of the patterns have the same basic look, this book, more than the others, has gotten me to experiment and create my own little beasts without written directions. That's a huge step for a beginner at crochet and quite an accomplishment for an author. I highly recommend this book as the first book you purchase on amigurumi. It will give you a good start, use up your yarn stash, and move you towards creating your own designs.

As mentioned already, the author has a lovely blog where she shares a few free patterns with her readers and shows off her latest creations. [...]

Cute !!! easy to make little amigurumi !!!
By Craft loving mom!!!
These are very cute and easy to crochet. Like the other reviewer said many things are done using a single crochet . The author also has a etsy shop and blog so check those out if you want to see more of her style. What I wanted to know before I bought it was what patterns are included:

Valentine Bears,Baby lion and his daddy, puppy and his daddy, baby monkey and her daddy, baby penguin and her mommy, baby owl and her mommy, baby hedgehog and her mommy, boy and girl elephants, baby octupus and her mommy, mr and mrs cactus, happy eggs, cafe con leche cup , cupcake , ice-cream cone, tiny ami that are: mouse ,bunny, cat, bear, turtle, and duck, also a little pear and a little apple with a worm.

The toys are made with worsted weight yarn size g/6 ,f/5 ,or e/4 hooks. You will also need polyester fiberfill, a tapestry needle, felt and safety eyes or embroidery floss.

I just got it and I have already made 3 bunny a duck and a little egg with a chick inside for easter gifts . They are all super cute don't take much yarn to make and work up fast!!!!

Five Stars..........My favorite Amigurumi Book............
By MidwestMom
I own this book and also "Amigurumi: Super Happy Cute Crochet" by Elisabeth Doherty, and also "Kyuuto Japanese Crafts: Amugurumi", so it is difficult for me not to compare this book to those. I happen to like this book the best out of the three, but there are aspects of the other books that are superior. In the Kyuuto Book there are very helpful illustrations for each pattern of how/where to attach all of the limbs. This book does not have those illustrations, so getting the exact limb placement is difficult. In the Amugurumi book by Elisabeth Doherty, she gives a color photograph of an actual size "universal gauge swatch" which is marvelous to have. The patterns in this book do not have a particular gauge, although the author does mention that her tension is quite tight, and how many stitches she gets per inch. However, although I know that gauge is not extrememly important for patterns like this, I like having gauge for all patterns that I do, or something like the universal gauge swatch that Elisabeth Doherty provides. Another thing that I like about Elisabeth Doherty's book better than this book is that she provides the exact yarn that she uses for each pattern. This book will simply say "worsted weight yarn in orange", but if you really like the color that is used in the book it would be helpful if she stated the exact brand and color of yarn used, maybe in a resource section at the end of the book. For example, in the Lion Pattern, I really like the shades of gold and orange that the author used, but I am having a difficult time locating them. If she stated the brand and color, I could easily locate these yarns on the internet. Out of the apx. 6 projects I have made (Mommy Owl, Mommy Penguin, Puppy, Happy Eggs, tiny ami duck/bear/rabbit, and Smiling Dessert cup) one pattern is incomplete, the "Cafe Con Leche Cup" from the "Smiling Desserts"; the pattern is only written to round 7, but from what I can tell by looking at the photograph there should be about 15 rounds total. But from my experience, I have yet to find a crochet book without any errors.

Having said all of this though, this is a fantastic little book, and I only wish there were more projects to do! The projects are quick and easy, and very cute. My kids like to look through the book, and tell me what they want me to make, and in fact I am working on the Daddy Lion, and the Little Pear right now. Patterns included in this book are: Valentines Bears (boy and girl bears), baby lion and his daddy, puppy and his daddy, baby monkey and her daddy, baby penguin and her mommy, baby owl and her mommmy, baby hedgehog and her mommy, boy and girl elephants, baby octopus and her mommy, mr. and mrs. cactus, happy eggs, smiling desserts, tiny ami, little pear and little apple with worm.

The author sells other patterns on etsy, I tried to contact her about patterns for house pets, such as guinea pigs, hamsters, hermit crabs, etc...I think these would be really fun to crochet because they could be crocheted to look like a child's pet, but she never responded to me. Oh well! For any amigurumi crochet designers, or publishers out there, I think an amigurumi "pet" book would be a great idea!!!

All in all, very well done! I am really looking forward to another book by this author, and will be the first to pre-order it when it becomes available!

(As a side note, I acidentally clicked 4 stars, when I really meant 5, when I tried to come back in and edit this, Amazon would not let me. Sorry to the author.......I really think your book is a 5 star book!)

You may know what to think but find it terribly difficult to actually change thinking habits that have been with you since childhood. People are forever using excuses and defending those excuse patterns as if they were actually true. Such statements as 'It would be very difficult for me to change - ', 'If I changed, it would create family dramas - ', 'I'm too old/young to change - ', and 'I've always been this way - ' are all excuses that are used regularly without challenging the truth of these thinking habits. When you eliminate excuses that explain your shortcomings or failures, you'll awaken to your infinite possibilities.

Just Another Self-help Book
By Dan
I can’t tell you exactly what is wrong with this book but I simply did not enjoyed reading it. I read a lot of self-help books lately and this one does not stand up from the crowd.

It is simply just another self-help book. The idea behind the book is great – stop looking for excuses and start following your dreams.

Great thinking or violation of copyright?
By CC
I wouldn't mind. I remember reading Your Erroneous Zones in the 1980s and thinking THIS is interesting - and dr Dyer still, lots of books later, has it going for him. For newcomers or people a couple of years into their inner growth process, I think his books are good, and the theme of this one is highly relevant for most people, experienced in the field or not. Buy it, by all means, but PLEASE, don't forget to get acquainted with the actual source of most of the content, namely Byron Katie.

Katie, herself author of numerous books and audio-books, is the creator of the inner work-process The Work, and her thoughts reverberate throughout this whole production. This in itself would be fine, of course; not many things are new in our inner world, after all, and all that's written about inner transformation has been said before. What makes this feel like a blatant steal to me is that Dyer has failed to even mention Byron Katie or The Work, even as he, in the third part of his book, uses the process pretty much as is. (He has added more questions, but as those are the ones that usually pop up with The Work, it's hard to see even them as original work.) I hold it to be extremely unlikely that Dyer came up with exactly the same concept (and phrasing, more or less, and order of the questions). And even if he did, as it happened some 25 years after Katie's process was born, I'm surprised that he didn't comment on the extreme similarities. It's odd that an American writer, with all of the country's propensity for legal fights over copyrights, has dared to publish this book without either referring to Katie or disguising her original work a bit more.

Other than that, as I said, go ahead. This book is bound to ruffle at least a few of your ego's feathers. If it weren't for the above reason, the book might have got four stars.

Solid TCM Information
By Jean Griswold
We have a reflexologist who comes to our home every other week to work on my 89-year-old mother, my husband, and myself. Under his care and for the first time in years, my mother is off all pharmaceutical meds, and has perfect blood pressure and choloesterol levels. When I visited China last year, I went to a TCM and was amazed at the accuracy of his diagnosis (better than the naturopath and the primary care physician back home!) so I was mentally open and ready to learn more about TCM. Our reflexologist loaned us his copy of this book and, after reading it, I knew we had to have one of our own. Highly recommend this book for the information provided (although it's not always the easiest reading).

The Prime of Life: A History of Modern Adulthood, by Steven Mintz

Adulthood today is undergoing profound transformations. Men and women wait until their thirties to marry, have children, and establish full-time careers, occupying a prolonged period in which they are no longer adolescents but still lack the traditional emblems of adult identity. People at midlife struggle to sustain relationships with friends and partners, to find employment and fulfilling careers, to raise their children successfully, and to resist the aging process.

The Prime of Life puts today’s challenges into new perspective by exploring how past generations navigated the passage to maturity, achieved intimacy and connection, raised children, sought meaning in work, and responded to loss. Coming of age has never been easy or predictable, Steven Mintz shows, and the process has always been shaped by gender and class. But whereas adulthood once meant culturally-prescribed roles and relationships, the social and economic convulsions of the last sixty years have transformed it fundamentally, tearing up these shared scripts and leaving adults to fashion meaning and coherence in an increasingly individualistic culture.

Mintz reconstructs the emotional interior of a life stage too often relegated to self-help books and domestic melodramas. Emphasizing adulthood’s joys and fulfillments as well as its frustrations and regrets, he shows how cultural and historical circumstances have consistently reshaped what it means to be a grown up in contemporary society. The Prime of Life urges us to confront adulthood’s realities with candor and determination and to value and embrace the responsibility, sensible judgment, wisdom, and compassionate understanding it can bring.

Review
We live in an age of generational turmoil. Baby-boom parents are accused of clinging on to jobs and houses which they should be freeing up for their children. Twentysomethings who can’t afford to leave home and can’t get jobs are attacked as aimless and immature. Both sides of the generational divide should take comfort from this timely, thoughtful work by Steven Mintz…Mintz argues for a new understanding of adulthood…It is a great book, and a triumph of historical writing; it shows that the past really can explain the present. (Jane Ridley The Spectator 2015-05-02)

[Mintz] offers some comforting news. Going back centuries in this country, ‘adults’ never particularly had their acts together… [He shows] that the 1950s model of family life, with its emphasis on early marriage and childbearing as markers of adulthood, is anything but representative of traditional values… His message―that there are many ways to wear the mantle of responsible adulthood and that the 1950s model is a mere blip on history’s radar―is deeply necessary and long overdue. (Meghan Daum New York Times Book Review 2015-06-21)

Mintz uses history to illustrate both the similarities and differences between adulthood in 2015 and adulthood in other times, so that readers can put their lives into perspective…Mintz is a good storyteller and his examples, particularly from centuries past are engaging. Ultimately, Mintz provides a very readable, and very interesting, history of an all too often overlooked subject. (Catherine Ramsdell PopMatters 2015-05-26)

This original and comprehensive book interestingly sets the far-reaching change in contemporary adulthood in historical perspective. (E. Stina Lyon Times Higher Education 2015-04-30)

Coming of age, argues historian Steven Mintz, is not what it used to be. Characterizing adulthood as a ‘historical black hole,’ Mintz sets out to trace the concept’s trajectory from the nineteenth century to its 1950s apex, and its disintegration in our individualistic times. He looks at shifts in intimacy, marriage, parenthood and work, noting that some 80% of today’s U.S. citizens in their late twenties have yet to tick off all the traditional indicators of adulthood, such as leaving home. Yet we need to dig deeper to redefine adulthood, he avers―not least, by reinstating qualities such as judgement to the definition. (Barbara Kiser Nature 2015-04-16)

Describing the cultural, economic, and social changes from the Colonial era to today’s world with a wealth of information and attention to class, gender, and ethnicity, Mintz argues that neither religious nor secular middle-class values are adequate responses to the new generation’s problems. A thoughtful and strangely encouraging tour of an often difficult life stage. (Kirkus Reviews 2015-02-01)

Historian Mintz approaches a big subject--American adulthood--in a big way; by drawing on 400 years of social and economic history, philosophy, psychology, law, religion, literature, art, and even cinema and television…He presents a thoughtful and thorough guide through the life stages for all readers wishing to embark on these big voyages. (Janet Ingraham Dwyer Library Journal 2015-04-01)

In the 1950s, most men had met all of society’s markers for adulthood by their mid-20s―and most women would never fully meet them, whatever their age. In this engagingly written and thought-provoking book, Mintz explores the fascinating history of American definitions of adulthood and shows how new economic, cultural, and gender relationships have expanded and complicated those definitions in recent years. (Stephanie Coontz, author of A Strange Stirring: The Feminine Mystique and American Women at the Dawn of the 1960s)

The Prime of Life is a compelling story of just how much the meaning and process of attaining adulthood has changed throughout the history of the United States. Mintz does a masterful job of narration and interpretation, reminding readers why he is the preeminent historian of the life course. (Frank F. Furstenberg, author of Destinies of the Disadvantaged: The Politics of Teenage Childbearing)

Finally, the Truth About Adulthood
By Suzy Tee
The book may not be a page-turner, about which some people seem to be complaining, but its premise couldn't be more profound: "Adulthood" is not a fixed definition by which to judge ourselves, but an ever-changing, highly diverse set of life experiences that varies from person to person, culture to culture, and century to century. To judge any adult life by today's conservative definition of "marriage, family and work" is both damaging and extremely limiting, an observation which Mintz's facts make abundantly clear. More importantly, to use this narrow-minded definition as "...a yardstick by which all trends and social movements are measured [suggests] not just an unhealthy romanticizing of that era but a collective aversion to cultural complexity - one that affects everything from national policy to individual self-esteem." These are not my words, but Meghan Daum's, in her review of the book in the New York Times. I couldn't have said it better myself.

Chronicling Four Hundred Years of American Family Life
By Dr. Laurence Raw
THE PRIME OF LIFE covers an ambitious canvas, as it tries to tell the story of the socially-produced concept of adulthood from the seventeenth century to the present. Through a series of elegantly researched chapters, Mintz focuses on different aspects of the topic, including adolescence, young adulthood, marriage, alternatives to marriage, family life, different constructions of family, and the ways in which human beings have coped with the wok/leisure divide.

And yet the book remains something of a disappointment. Perhaps this is due to the familiarity of the subject-matter: many of the topics covered in THE PRIME OF LIFE have been covered by authors past and present in a form of discourse far more lively than Mintz's rather pedestrian prose. Sometimes it feels as if he has sacrificed originality for comprehensiveness; by trying to cover four hundred years of family life in three hundred pages, he summons up a wealth of evidence but remains short on analysis.

Perhaps the disappointment is also due to a certain degree of cross-cultural myopia. Although specifically focused on American family life, Mintz could have made more comparisons with other countries - not just Great Britain, but other European and Asian nations as well. Sometimes his claims to uniqueness about American family life seem rather hollow; many of the elements he identifies are common to families worldwide.

Or maybe it's just because of the conclusion - after three hundred pages of closely-worded argument, he advises those in late maturity to set aside their problems and look instead at the positive sides of their lives; their ability to make sense of the world through experience, and their feeling that they have achieved something. This advice seems banal, to say the least; many adults have neither the time nor the opportunity to make such reflections, as they struggle to survive in economically stringent times. Even if we do have the capacity to reflect, perhaps we should be looking for new possibilties; in other words, rediscovering our childlike capacity for wonder, rather than trusting in our experience.

THE PRIME OF LIFE is a good dipping-book but rather a tiresome read as a whole.
