Dr. Sharps' book provides police officers (especially trainers) with an excellent resource for understanding the effects of hormonally induced stress on performance. As a reader, I appreciate the straightforward writing style and the abundance of references that provide me with additional reading material.

A Thorough, Interesting Look At Police Decisions Under Pressure

Dr. Sharp's book is a well-researched, reader-friendly explanation of the potential effects of stress, pressure, mind-set, human nature and circumstances on decision-making in police environments. Included are chapters on eye-witness and memory errors, tactical errors and even budget-development errors, as well as very useful information about training needed to recognize potential decision-making errors and purposefully guarding against them.

Some of the introductory material will be familiar to those who were part of the era (mid-1970s and on) in which stress management training and police psychologists were introduced in many departments.(Although that is not the entire focus of this book.) Those who have read Blink by Malcolm Gladwell will also recognize some of the concepts. However, unlike Gladwell's book, which discussed police decision-making in only one or two sections, this book is focused entirely on understanding and improving police decisions. There is obvious application in many settings.

Some of the terminology may at first seem heavy on psychological terms (gestalt, feature intensive, cognitive dissonance, etc.) However, the author explains those sufficiently and thus credits readers with wanting to expand their thinking rather than just getting a pop-cop-psychology book. I had difficulty relating to some of his examples, especially when discussing the reticence of officers to express their feelings about organizational decisions. I think the department with which he primarily works, the Fresno PD, must be more military and rank conscious than most if that is the case there. But, he may have been providing an extreme case to make a point. That was a small quibble in the otherwise easily-applied book.

I would like to see the author develop a full text on supervisory and command level decision-making under the unique pressures, stressors and frustrations felt by those more administrative positions. Most sergeants, lieutenants, captains and chiefs have experienced the stressors of patrol work, but few patrol officers are aware of or even acknowledge the stress, pressure and isolation often felt by higher ranks or by non-sworn staff. A book similar to this, with that slightly different focus, might increase understanding by all levels for the others.

Dr. Sharp writes with a wry sense of humor and his book is well worth reading, considering and seeking ways to apply it. It could be very useful for officers of all ranks and their families, Peer Support and EAP members, trainers, FTOs, police chaplains, district attorneys, police oversight boards and similar groups, and community members in general. Thanks, Dr. Sharp, for what I can tell must have been a vast amount of work on this.

Precise and Accurate Updated Data

There is a lot of bad science, misinformation and fanciful nonsense floating about in the commercial martial arts arena and in other arenas attempting to explain what happens to the human animal under duress of violence.

This is an area of research where bad science and fanciful theory results in serious side effects to individuals adhering to such fanciful treats.

This new book: PROCESSING UNDER PRESSURE written by Matthew J. Sharps, provides an accurate and credible scientific explication of what actually occurs within the human's cognition, sensory-motor neural network and affectual systems under such duress--as well as what it means to the human affected.

Chapter One addresses the affects of adrenaline on the human nervous system, both acutely and chronically.

Chapter Two discusses perceptual and attentive processes and their distortions, specifically under combat situations.

Chapter Three provides insights into memory distortions which occur under duress and how memory is a mixture of these often distorted variables.

Chapter Four exercises the truths of the previous chapter on memory, and relates it in how eye-witness accounts can be erroneous on numerous accounts. What we think we see is not always what had happened.

Chapter Five relates how humans interpret visual cues under duress, and how these cues can be so easily misinterpreted with dire consequences to the "seer" and "seen."

Chapter Six covers the complexities of making sound judgments under duress, leaving our own personal biases and egos out of the mix. It uses examples from well researched past conflicts to provide a scientific template for decision-making under such stress.

Chapter Seven addresses the "Warrior Minds" explicating how such intelligent creates can make some really bad choices.

Chapters Eight, Nine and Ten are in depth after action reviews into cognition-processes in severe tactical situations, using what had occurred in past events of The Little Bighorn, Mogadishu (1993) and the Ardennes (1943), respectively.

As is true within these three overviews, this entire book applies references from the scientific community, backing up the details and conclusions--devoid of personal ego and marketing hype.

The Eleventh Chapter offers insights and foresight into the "...implications for training and enforcement in an increasingly risky world, where we must understand fully the context in which we wish to operate if we are to design sound training scenarios.

The book concludes with a poignant epilogue addressing violence and human responses thereof, with an extensive bibliography and index included.

Dr.Matthew J. Sharps (the author)teaches cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience and the history of psychology at California State University, Fresno, USA. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychological Specialties, American College of Forensic Examiners, and a Fellow of the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute.

Professor Sharps has consulted in over 160 criminal cases in California and currently serves as a research consultant to the Fresno Police Department.

A Great Commentary Of The Legend; A Shallow Treatise Of The Man

Micheal Jordan:The Life is an average biographical work of a sports icon whose career was larger than the game of basketball, and any other sports figure in the history of sports. Roland Lazenby's account of our beloved MJ fails to deliver anything new or exciting, and the book comes off as just another familiar sports column. Sure, he covers much of MJ's basketball career, but he clearly steers past major obstacles-positive and negative-in MJ's life, with only scant details, i.e., Operation Push's Nike Boycot, and his refusal to endorse African American Harvey Gantt in the North Carolina Senate race against Jesse Helms because "Republicans buy shoes too." How did these decisions impact MJ, family and friends, African-American teammates, and the African-American community?

MJ's family life is only remotely mentioned, many marital infidelities are oddly omitted, inplying that his affairs surfaced toward the end and after his basketball career. How did all this impact his wife and family? Also, Lazenby writes that MJ was a proud father, but fails to give any documentation to his Airness's fatherhood experiences; how his legend impacted his boy's (Marcus and Jeffrey) basketball careers, and how his failures affected all his children's (3 total, at the time) childhood experiences. Lastly, the book ends rather abruptly, leaving almost a blank concerning future plans of MJ's Charolette Hornets, his children's successes-life journey, and his new life with current wife Yvette Prieto. It would have been interesting story concerning MJ and Yvette Prieto's first meeting, and how she ultimately won MJ's heart. And what of MJ's estranged relationhip with his mother and siblings? All of these questions are strangely ignored as the book comes to a close.

Did I enjoy reading Micheal Jordan:The Life? Sure, any book written about Micheal Jordan will always be facinating because it's written from a different perspective. However, I don't view Lazenby's Micheal Jordan:The Life as anything definitive, one could simply read former biographys on MJ and recieve the same information. As another mentioned, Lazenby's writing wasn't top notch either, personally, I felt at times he lingured too long on miniscule details and ranting which often detracted from the story. This book is all about MJ's superior drive as a dominate competitor; where did Lazenby dismantle MJ's legend and present him in raw human form? However, in spite of Lazenby's failure to give us a vunerable MJ, I believe that Lazenby's ability as a sportswriter fit exceptionally well, especially when describing with sports commentator finesse MJ's amazing on court prowess, and the Bulls incredible run to six championships.

Personally, I believe that most have rated Lazenby's Micheal Jordan:The Life with 5 stars out of pure loyalty to MJ. Like millions blessed to witness the Jordan era, I'm still enamored with a man who once defied gravity, multiple obstacles, and willed himself and his teammates to absolute greatness. However, it isn't Air Jordan's spectacular legacy up for critique, MJ's career is unprecedented, but rather this particular compliation which is poorly written and worth only 3 stars. Perhaps, Lazenby, in the years to come will have an oportunity to improve upon 'The Life' with a much needed reissue: Micheal Jordan: (Inside) The Life, and he will have produced an original and definitive volume on 'The Life' of Micheal Jordan indeed.

In his resplendent biography of Michael Jordan, veteran sportswriter Roland Lazenby carefully chronicles the Hall of Famer's journey from his humble beginnings in Teachey, North Carolina, to his startling transformation to "His Airness."

"Personality-wise, he's a study," said former Chicago Bulls assistant coach Tex Winter of the six-time NBA champion. Lazenby offers nuanced insights into the basketball phenom's character through soulful and, at times, wistful family narratives. To understand the full force of MJ's wondrous life, Lazenby opens with the poignant story of Dawson Jordan. Born at the turn of the 20th century in a shotgun shack on the banks of North Carolina's Coastal plain, Michael's great-grandfather was a looming authority figure who possessed immense physical strength. In his youth, Dawson engaged in dangerous forestry, taking down trees, then bundling and floating the logs downriver to Wilmington's shipyards. In his lifetime, he was a lumber mill worker, logger, sharecropper, moonshiner, hunt club cook and determined survivor.

Lazenby portrays James and Deloris Jordan as thoroughly devoted parents, preparing their five children to become citizens of the world. "The greatest impact of their parenting came in the constant shaping of the children's attitudes," Lazenby writes, "they preached a constant refrain: Work hard. Achieve. Set goals. Think ahead. Don't be denied. Be considerate. Don't dwell on race."

Jordan's ability to listen was among his most impressive attributes, and his relationship with his mother made him receptive to coaching. Lanzenby notes that Jordan would come to call Dean Smith his second father and found Chapel Hill a safe harbor largely because of the family atmosphere that the Tar Heels coach built.

There are many tender episodes of familial love sprinkled throughout the book, including father-and-son basketball trips and backyard baseball games. But Lazenby also sheds light on the myth of Jordan's perfect upbringing, such as a home plagued with marital discord, money problems and allegations of abuse.

Daily heated one-on-one games with his stronger, older brother, Larry, resulted in constant thumpings. These physical backyard battles informed MJ's approach to the game both as an amateur and as a professional. Whether donning the uniform for Laney High School's Buccaneers, North Carolina's Tar Heels or the Chicago Bulls, Jordan's m.o. was to seek out the best player and try to dismantle them. Lazenby says, "Each opponent loomed as a Larry to be conquered."

Comprehensive and well-researched, Lazenby's biography offers an impressive detailed account of Jordan's storied basketball, Olympic and baseball careers, as well as his wide-ranging business interests. Comprehensive!

The content itself is great. This issue here is how much you want to read about Jordan's ancestors and early life. I think some of the negative reviews I've read have overstated it, though. By about 15% into the book, you're already dealing with Jordan's high school (varsity) playing, and his recruitment to UNC. From there, the remaining 80-85% is lots of new tidbits about the life you already know: college, the NBA, and post-pro life.

If you're really looking to jump into an inside look at the parts of Jordan's life that you're already somewhat familiar with, skip the first 10-15%. That said, slogging through the early stuff makes the later stuff feel more satisfying.
