A must have for the Professional Questioned Document Examiner

This first edition is a must have for the professional Questioned Document Examner. Excellent details in pen, ink, paper, indented writing Forensice Document Examination. Some methods of ink and pen identification qre not even covered in most Forensic Questioned Document Books, Not in the detail covered here. How do you know if an envelope has been steamed opened and reglued? What methods of page substitution are not covered in other tests? How can you quickly identify, beyond watermarks, if a page may not be consistent with others in a corporate agreement? Mr Ellen is truly a master Forensic Document Examiner. In my opinion he is the modern day version of Albert Osborn. My Osborn's Questioned Documents was the first complete book on Questioned Document Examination. It is dated now but Mr. Ellen's book covers it all. A great book. A must have for the 21st century.

The 1st and 2nd editon should not be confused with the 3rd edition. The 1st and 2nd edition give great technical detail as to methodology in use of Forensic Equipment, VSC-1, ESDA, IR/UV, ink and paper analysis. The 3rd edition answers methodology in visual examination as to methods of construction,disquised writing, simulations,significance of similarities and differences. The 3rd edition is more general than the previous editions but an excellent resource for the Forensic Questioned Document Examiner in training and as a refresher for the seasoned Forensic Questioned Document Examiner. It is also a must have for the Forensic Questioned Document Examiner Library.

Shallow and unprofessional book

In short: Shallow, not informative and not professional. Suitable to pre-beginners, if ever. No samples at all. I was shoked to realize that I paid so much for this misleading book. To my opinion, Amazon should be more careful with the deceptive reviews that alleged customers write about books. After the great disappointed I experienced in purchasing this book, I stopped buying books from Amazon anymore.

This book changed my life!

The 'Wise Woman' Book changed my life. I was in a troubled marriage, and after our fifth marriage counselor advised separation or divorce, I came upon this material in desperation, hungry to know there was more out there than pending doom. God used this material to open the floodgates of heaven and deliver me and my marriage, and now, four years later, my husband and I are thriving, in a joyful, loving relationship, have openness and intimacy, and have started a ministry to hurting men and women. This book was the catalyst that began our redemption into the awesome relationship we now have! Don't think about it - just buy it!

Radical!!

This book is not for the faint of heart; not for those who want the easy way out. It is for the broken hearted, broken in spirit, those who are at the bottom, in the dark and cold, alone and afraid and see no way out. There IS a way out, and Someone to hold your right hand, to help you thru the agonizing pain of separation and/or divorce. Written by a woman who has been there, it is a very gritty procedural digest of how to win your spouse back, even if they are actively pursuing divorce. Her advice, written in very plain form, very straightforward, is hard to swallow. It IS very radical in nature; but so is the death of a marriage. She speaks not the current trend in marital counseling we find in our churches today; but then, why are we even having to deal with these issues so much in our churches today? Think about it. I believe in her teachings, as I believe her foundation is the Rock of Ages, Jesus Christ. Pray and meditate as you read, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you. And as your journey begins (or continues), realize that you don't have to walk alone; that your only Source of Hope is waiting to lead you through the Valley. "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, and saveth such as be of a conrite spirit." (Psalm 34:18 KJV)

How To Read Signs
I found "How to Read Signs" fascinating from cover-to-cover. The book includes guidelines of working with the angels on a daily basis in a multitude of ways. From doing angel-specific breathing exercises, to reading numbers, to reading symbols in your dreams the book opens up endless possibilities of connecting and working with your angels. The authors use countless stories and examples to demonstrate the interconnectedness of life's moments that can lead to positive change if we remain aware of our Divine heritage. After reading the book I was truly inspired to live a life dedicated to demonstrating Angelic Qualities. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is seeking to work on their spiritual development.

About the Author
Oded Goldreich is a Professor of Computer Science at the Weizmann Institute of Science and an Incumbent of the Meyer W. Weisgal Professorial Chair. He is an editor for the SIAM Journal on Computing, the Journal of Cryptology, and Computational Complexity, and previously authored the books Modern Cryptography, Probabilistic Proofs and Pseudorandomness, Computational Complexity: A Conceptual Perspective, and the two-volume work Foundations of Cryptography.

Excellent book on the *foundations* of Crypto

This is a great book. Solid, rigorous but not obscure. The author goes into lots of details and presents long proofs along the way, but the book is supposed to be like that... You will find a rigorous introduction to three concepts: one-way functions, pseudorandom generators and zero-knowledge proofs. Volume II of the book will show how to conceptually build cryptographic tools using these concepts (but he won't present pseudocode or get into implementation details -- that's not the point of his work).
Sections that are difficult and that could be skipped are marked with an asterisk.

One thing the reader should be aware of is that the author strongly opposes to using the "Random Oracle model", so if you want more information on that you'll have to find it elsewhere.

For anyone interested in theoretical cryptography, I'd say this book is absolutely required reading -- I suggest always having it around for reference.

Superb presentation of the theoretical foundations.

We all know what it means for an algorithm to compute a function, but what does it mean for an encryption scheme to be secure? Traditionally, cryptographic schemes were suggested and attacked based on ad-hoc criterias, for lack of a proper theoretical setting. The last two decades have seen enormous progress in this respect. New notions were devised to harness the computational difficulty of problems in a constructive way to achieve security (in various senses) against all adversaries. This enabled the definition of a host of well-defined cryptographic "objects" and investigation of their existence and relations.
The planned 3-volume series aims to provide a thorough presentation of the theory, written by a dominant figure in the field. This first volume introduces the basic notions: one-way functions, pseudorandom generators, various zero-knowledge proof systems and related concepts. Curiously, common cryptographic objects such as encryption schemes and signature schemes are only briefly discussed in an appendix -- the author has chosen to postpone these to the Volume 2 in the interest of in-depth discussion of the simpler objects. Hence this volume does not stand well on its own, and until Volume 2 is published the impatient reader may be disappointed. Fortunately, drafts of Volume 2 are available on-line: [...]
The presentation style is a tour de force of didactic sensitivity. The subject material is often problematic, because the mental gymnastics required are not quite like any other field. The author is fully aware of this, and provides ample intuitive discussion and motivation to help the reader through the more technical parts (without compromising rigorousness). A clear effort is made to present, or at least mention and reference, all interesting results pertaining to the discussion. This makes the book invaluable as a reference, though it could have been overwhelming had not the author taken care to separate these excursions from the main discussion. The exercises are usually well-considered and rewarding, and unlike some textbooks you won't find important results disguised as an optional exercise.
Those interested primarily in practical applications of cryptography may well find this book too abstract and irrelevant; the relation between this book and Schneier's "Applied Cryptography" is roughly like that between organic chemistry and cooking. However, for those taking academic interest in the field or trying to devise novel cryptographic schemes, this book is an effective way to get a solid grasp on the theory, and a delightful way to understand this exciting branch of computer science.

Great idea -- needs a good editor!

This book hits some extremes in good and bad. The good is easy: There are few (no?) other books that fill the niche of theoretical cryptography. There are some excellent lecture notes from Bellare and Goldwasser that are available on the web, but they don't go into the detailed motivation of topics that Goldreich does. The topics that Goldreich has chosen cover a lot of important areas, and he has done a great job of pulling out the best, most essential results to present.
However, the bad part is that the writing is simply horrible. There seems to be little planning and things simply don't flow at all. Here's a specific example, which is so bad as to almost be funny: There's a huge use of footnotes for side comments, mostly because of this "stream of consciousness" writing that doesn't work things in properly. The first footnote in chapter 4 says, believe it or not, "See Footnote 13". Huh? So I go digging through the later part of the chapter, looking desperately for this gem of knowledge that will be in footnote 13, and what is it? The definition of a graph! Now come on -- chapter 4 of a book, where we've been dealing with advanced topics in computer science, and they feel the need to define a graph!?!?! Through several levels of indirection in footnotes? Come on guys, what editor let that one through?
Oded is a great computer scientist, and a good guy, but please, PLEASE get a good editor for the other volumes, or maybe even a good writer to team up with!

they did it again

I passed my programmer's exam because i studied the other wonderful book produced by these two authors; sun's certified programmer book. It helps me to code better too. The certification definitely helps me to become a very competent java programmer.
Having passed the first exam, I started studying for my SCWCD exam. But then after working with Jakarta Struts for a while, I don't know whether it's worth while to take the SCWCD exam. I surely hate the JSP snippets, it makes JSP pages unmaintainable. So, I seriously do not know how SCWCD will help me to do my job better. Dilemma! Dilemma! We're not in college anymore; hence anything we learn should be worth the money, time, and effort.
That's my humble opinion.
Hence, i turn my attention to this book; I skimmed through it for the first couple of days and realize that this is the certification that I shoud pursue next; SCBCD instead of SCWCD. I look beyond the certification; the ability to program EJB to do a better job. Having intrinsic reasons to do something, for example learning the subject for the sake of the knowledge and implementation, is far better than having a piece of paper that says you are certified.
I started reading the book and i honestly just cannot put it down. So far, the items covered in this book make a lot of sense to me; in terms of how i can use them to write better codes and design better EJB. I am a visual learner. Thus, the graphics in this book really enhance and expedite my learning process. When I read them, I understand the concepts instantly! Plus, they're funny. It makes the learning process very fun! Make sure you have some notebook and draw/sketch the important concepts. They help understand some complex points presented.
All in all, for those of you who want to learn EJB but don't know where to start, this book could be your answer. You may not be going for the certification but the book will guide you through to make sure that you grasp all the needed concepts to become a competent EJB programmer.

Great style

The authors take a complex subject and make it understandable through an interesting set of didactics - they have different ways (like posing questions and giving answers in a conversational style; using metaphors, etc.) of presenting material to enhance understanding.

The most complex part of the subject is entity beans whose methods are inconsistent with stateless session beans of the same name. I think after reading the book one needs to rethink even using entity beans for anything because of the overhead and complexity. I would really be concerned about performance so testing a vertical slice would be a necessity.

The real question at this time is whether you should learn and get involved with EJB 2 at all - since EJB 3 is destined to completely simplify the whole process - eliminate the home interface, ejb component objects, etc.

Using POJOs (Plain Old Java Objects) to accomplish the same task is the strategy of the new light, non-J2EE standards based frameworks such as Spring. It's anticipated that EJB 3 will be very Spring like - whether they hide all the EJB 2 details under the covers or re-architect the whole framework (and hopefully get Spring like performance). There is also the whole notion (and nightmare) of testing your bean using separate containers that one should consider before embarking on the EJB 2 path. All in all, I enjoyed the book's style, and if nothing else, it will help you appreciate the simplicity (hopefully) of EJB 3 when it becomes available.

If you need to support legacy EJB architectures, this is the book to use to learn EJB 2. If you are architecting a new solution, wait for EJB 3, or better yet, look into the light weight non-standards based frameworks like Spring.

different, excellent

At my first look at this book I thought it was a comic book, but then I realized it is actually a comic book, but also a good, sound introduction to EJB technology. Let's be honest.. how many of us are absolutely sick of dry, boring texts that try to sell you ejb technology and themselves as they were rocket science? Most computer related books nowadays are ridiculously formal and dry. Is this the way to attract the interest of students or new developers? I don't think so, and neither do the authors of this book. This text is both a good intro to EJB and an example of how to teach. So it will be useful for both the novice programmer and the expert one who is involved in teaching or mentoring. Be warned that this book is really "different" so if you are kinda stiff and find it disconcerting to have lots of images scattered along the text
and like to concentrate only on the "essential raw matter" this
might not be the book for you. A fine example of the fact that only really serious people are not afraid of being funny...

I just finish half the book , and i notice that at P.27 bottom right corner .
3 boxes stays in a straight line
and there is two of them content are the same ,both says" Is sub-sector command approval required?"
the last one is "Is Segmentaum command approval required?"

Hail to the Comissar!

As stated in my review of the Uplifting Primer, I am biased heavily by my IG roots. With family in the army I connected with the way they run and how this book portrays the epic-level paperwork you have to file to get coffee let alone a bomber to level the enemie's bunker. A somewhat saterical look at how The Departmento Munitorum and its Comissar's operate, this book is guaranteed to grant laughs, headaches, and some sadness for those who have had to file similar paperwork. I carry this and the Uplifting primer in my jacket with me like a Doctor Who fan would carry the "Darlek Survival Guide."
