Originally written in 1951, a post-World War II journey through Italy Above Florence and the valley of the Arno stood the Villa Diana, in one of the oldest inhabited parts of Italy, at the end of an old Etruscan road that wound among olive groves and lines of cypresses. The home of Poliziano in the 15th century, it had been occupied by the troops of seven different armies during World War II but otherwise escaped damage, if one overlooked the looting of the grand piano. It was here that Alan Moorehead, known as one of the greatest correspondents of that war, moved in 1948 to travel through Italy and write this celebrated book. His experiences illustrate the issues of the day, yet surrounded as always by extreme physical beauty and governed by the rhythms of the seasons. He describes with wit such diverse matters as the daily drama of life among the servants, the reviving fortunes of Portofino, the 500-year-old horse race around the main square of Siena, the gondoliers' union in Venice, and a traffic clash between a family of pigs and a cart full of crucifixes.

About the Author
Alan Moorehead (1910–1983) was born in Melbourne and came to England at the age of 25, making a worldwide reputation as a journalist and war correspondent. After the war, he traveled constantly and wrote a series of vivid reconstructions of historical events.

Brownian Motion Calculus

Brownian Motion Calculus presents the basics of Stochastic Calculus with a focus on the valuation of financial derivatives. It is intended as an accessible introduction to the technical literature. The sequence of chapters starts with a description of Brownian motion, the random process which serves as the basic driver of the irregular behaviour of financial quantities. That exposition is based on the easily understood discrete random walk. Thereafter the gains from trading in a random environment are formulated in a discrete-time setting. The continuous-time equivalent requires a new concept, the Itō stochastic integral. Its construction is explained step by step, using the so-called norm of a random process (its magnitude), of which a motivated exposition is given in an Annex. The next topic is Itō’s formula for evaluating stochastic integrals; it is the random process counter part of the well known Taylor formula for functions in ordinary calculus. Many examples are given. These ingredients are then used to formulate some well established models for the evolution of stock prices and interest rates, so-called stochastic differential equations, together with their solution methods. Once all that is in place, two methodologies for option valuation are presented. One uses the concept of a change of probability and the Girsanov transformation, which is at the core of financial mathematics. As this technique is often perceived as a magic trick, particular care has been taken to make the explanation elementary and to show numerous applications. The final chapter discusses how computations can be made more convenient by a suitable choice of the so-called numeraire. A clear distinction has been made between the mathematics that is convenient for a first introduction, and the more rigorous underpinnings which are best studied from the selected technical references. He joined The Business School for Financial Markets (the ICMA Centre) at the University of Reading, UK, in 1997, to develop and teach its curriculum in Quantitative Finance. Prior to that, he was a derivatives mathematician at the merchant bank Robert Fleming in the City of London. Before that his career was focused in Operations Research in the US and Europe.

much needed missing link

This is an awesome book!

It follows a non-rigorous (non measure-theoretic) approach to brownian motion/SDEs, similar in that respect to the traditional calculus textbook approach. The author provides plenty of intuition behind results, plenty of drills and generally solves problems without jumping any intermediate step.

I have read most books of the kind and this one is clearly the best. It is suitable for undergraduate education, namely in engineering and in finance. It may be a bit on the light side for maths undergrads, although could be used for a light intro to these topics.

Excellent Introduction Without the Abstract Math Approach

This is really the best introduction book on the subject matter I have ever read. If you are not a current student in shool or newly graduate with math training, or a math teacher, but have some general college math training then this book is the best introduction for you on this subject. Although I had read some basic abstract math starting with the set theory long time ago, it took me too much time to proceed in reading standard intro math to financial engineering. Thanks to the author's introduction, when I come back to those FE math it feels SO easy now.

excellent introduction

i have some familiarity regarding brownian motion. Many stochastic calculus books go into deep mathematical reasoning. I really enjoyed the authors approach to the problem. This is clearly the way one should start into the subject prior to starting an MFE program. Then after reading the book, one can read the book by sean dineen etc or other stochastic calculus books which go into more rigorous detail. This book must not be missed by any chance. It will give you an edge in MFE programs knowing this material. He has written this book in the same style as many calculus books which is very helpful. Once you master this book, you can go into a move proof based subject matter.

OK with a little help from the teacher

I used this with a high beginning level community college ESL class, and it was OK, supplemented with visuals and video that you can easily access online.

It contains at least one historical inaccuracy--that the Watts riots were the worst race riots in U.S. history (Google Tulsa race riot for the corrected information).

About the Author
Mark Hutter is a professor of sociology at Rowan University and has served as coordinator of the Bantivoglio Honors Program. He teaches and has an active and ongoing research agenda in both urban studies and family sociology and has extensively published and presented papers in these areas. He is the author of The Changing Family 3rd ed (Allyn and Bacon, 1998) and the editor of The Family Experience 4th ed (Allyn & Bacon, 2004). His scholarship and pedagogical involvement in the field of family studies has received international recognition with the award of the National Council on Family Relations’ Jan Trost Award for Outstanding Contributions to Comparative Family Studies in 2004. He is a past president of the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction and Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society.

Best Urban Textbook Currently on the Market

I teach Urban Sociology and have looked at a number of textbooks. For me, Mark Hutter's book is the best one on the market at the moment. It covers all of the topics one would expect in a textbook and it is well written, for the most part. Although Hutter discusses the main theories in urban sociology, he primarily uses symbolic interactionism to show how people's perceptions of the city are shaped by their social class, race, and gender characteristics and the political economy perspective to illuminate how cities do not just happen, but take shape based on the influence of political, business, and real estate elites. Hutter, for example, discusses how our notions about gender and family shaped the development of shopping in downtown areas and lead to the rise of the suburbs. What sets Hutter's book apart from the rest is that he incorporates a cultural perspective in his analysis of city life. For example, the book has a chapter on the City as Work of Art, where Hutter links impressionist paintings, city life, and the emerging middle class in Paris and the work of Mural artists in Philadelphia to urban redevelopment. There is also a chapter on how skyscrapers reflect the image that corporate interests what to project to the public. Lastly, Hutter looks at connections to others and how urban settings can facilitate or inhibit them, and the consequences of social isolation for people's well-being. Most of the problems that I have with the book revolve around poor editing. There are passages in one paragraph that are repeated in the next one, which suggests that Hutter moved some sentences around for this Second Edition and was not careful about deleting the old material. There are also some mistakes in citations. For example, in discussing George Will's comments on the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the text misspells his last name as Wills multiple times. While minor, these errors detract from the overall quality of Hutter's writing. I
recommended it to anyone teaching a class in Urban Sociology.

Where to begin? "'Begin at the beginning," the King said gravely, "and go on till you come to the end: then stop." (Alice in Wonderland)

Being that I just took Urban Sociology this semester I thought it would be best to go ahead and give my two cents on the text book. "Discovering Cities" isn't a bad text book, but then it isn't the single greatest text book either. It does focus on the basics of Urban Sociology, but there are portions that seems to just skim over. I was lucky enough to have a wonderful professor for the class who seemed to know the material well enough that she was able to provide insight where the book fell short. Still, for a run of the mill text book it's not bad. I would have preferred for it to go deeper into the culture and subcultures of the Urban setting, but then again "we can't always get what we want."

Do I recommend it? Sure if your course is using the book get it, but do I recommend it for a private collection? No, you would be far better off doing research on the Chicago School and going from there.

Good book, great man.

Loved the book. I took an Urban Sociology class last semester & we used this book because my professor was Mark Hutter, the author. Love him & the book so much that I'm taking him again now. Such a cool guy, he's absolutely passionate about what he does & I think it shows in this book as well. I may be biased because I know the man himself but it's an easier read than most textbooks. It flows well & the tone in which it's written made it feel personal & kept my attention.
