  • Why do Organizations exist?

  • What is the relationship between markets and organizations?

  • When does one perform better than the other?

The Answers: Economic Approaches to Organizations.

Now in its fourth edition, Economic Approaches to Organizations remains one of the few texts to emphasize the importance of economic issues and developments in the study of organizations and management.

It explains in a non-technical way economic approaches such as behavioural theory of the firm, game theory, agency theory, transaction cost economics, economics of strategy and evolutionary approaches. This latest edition also shows how different economic approaches are applied in practice with a new Part III Applications.

New to the fourth edition:

New part III Applications includes 3 new chapters on mergers and acquisitions, hybrid forms (like joint ventures, business groups and franchising) and corporate governance.

Step – by- step conceptual framework to explain the fundamental economic approach to organizations is updated to include coverage of the environment and institutions.

Heavier emphasis on institutional and evolutionary perspectives is carried through the text as well as greater coverage of the resource based view of strategy and the introduction of the concept of dynamic capabilities.

This is an ideal textbook for a course on Organization and Management from an economic perspective. Self-Made Man: One Woman's Journey into Manhood and Back Again, by Norah Vincent

A journalist’s provocative and spellbinding account of her eighteen months spent disguised as a man

Norah Vincent became an instant media sensation with the publication of Self-Made Man, her take on just how hard it is to be a man, even in a man’s world. Following in the tradition of John Howard Griffin (Black Like Me), Norah spent a year and a half disguised as her male alter ego, Ned, exploring what men are like when women aren’t around. As Ned, she joins a bowling team, takes a high-octane sales job, goes on dates with women (and men), visits strip clubs, and even manages to infiltrate a monastery and a men’s therapy group. At once thought- provoking and pure fun to read, Self-Made Man is a sympathetic and thrilling tour de force of immersion journalism.

  • A woman dresses as a man for 18 months to live as one.

From Publishers Weekly
The disguise that former Los Angeles Times op-ed columnist Vincent employed to trick dozens of people into believing her a man was carefully thought out: a new, shorter haircut; a pair of rectangular eyeglasses; a fake five o'clock shadow; a prosthetic penis; some preppy clothes. It was more than she needed. "[A]s I became more confident in my disguise... the props I had used... became less and less important, until sometimes I didn't need them at all," Vincent writes. Gender marking, she found, is more about attitude than appearance. Vincent's account of the year and a half she spent posing as a man is peppered with such predictable observations. To readers of gender studies literature, none of them will be especially illuminating, but Vincent's descriptions of how she learned, and tested, such chestnuts firsthand make them awfully fun to read. As "Ned," Vincent joined an all-male bowling league, dated women, worked for a door-to-door sales force, spent three weeks in a monastery, hung out in strip clubs and, most dangerous of all, went on a Robert Bly–style men's retreat. She creates rich portraits of the men she met in these places and the ways they behaved—as a lesbian, she's particularly good at separating the issues of sexuality from those of gender. But the most fascinating part of the story lies within Vincent herself—and the way that censoring her emotions to pass as a man provoked a psychological breakdown. For fans of Nickel and Dimed–style immersion reporting, this book is a sure bet. (Jan. 23)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Vincent's first experiment in cross-dressing came on a dare from an acquaintance who was a drag king. When she experienced the intoxicating invisibility and safety that came from wearing the disguise, she wanted to learn more. For 18 months, she disguised herself as a man, renamed herself Ned, joined a men's bowling league, visited strip bars, and dated women. Along the way, she found that the freedom and privileges enjoyed by men were counterbalanced by a constant testing and severe limits on emotions. She also found women to be distrustful, ever ready to criticize men for being emotionally distant yet clearly preferring men who met stereotypical images of strength and virility. Vincent is frank about her experiences--the hard business of sexual transactions devoid of emotions, the easy bonding between men, fear of sexual attraction among men, and, ultimately, the explosion of her own notions of sex roles. She also explores the guilt she feels about her deception. Writing from the perspective of a gay woman who had a view of the male world that women don't get to see, Vincent finds unexpected complexities in the men she meets and in herself as well. Review
A thoughtful, entertaining piece of first-person investigative journalism . . . Self-Made Man transcends its premise altogether. . . . So rich and so audacious . . . [I was] hooked from Page 1. (David Kamp, The New York Times Book Review)

Vincent’s account of how she ‘became’ a man is undeniably fascinating.” (Los Angeles Times Book World)

Eye-opening . . . Self-Made Man will make many women think twice about coveting male ‘privilege’ and make any man feel grateful that his gender is better understood. (The Washington Post)

[Vincent] can be as perspicuous and exact as Joan Didion or Gloria Steinem at nailing a hitherto disregarded truth about the sexes in a single elegant and witty phrase. . . . This is a brave and often fascinating book, with Vincent . . . offering us perspectives that are entirely fresh and new. (The Times,London)

Should Be Required Reading For All High School and College Students! AMAZINGLY good.
By Bill Mann
This book has the potential to be important, this book tells a story that needs desperately to be told. It reminds me of the book "Black Like Me" in which a white man disguised himself as a black man in the 1960s.

Almost no one really knows the difference between the way men and women are treated in modern society. No one has done both, so we can't really compare. There is an assumption that women are "oppressed" and men are the "oppressor" but since women don't actually know how men are treated, and men don't actually know how women are treated, it was just an assumption.

Norah Vincent decided to test that assumption. She spent an entire year letting society treat her the way men are treated. Then she compared that to how society treats women. Her conclusions? Being a man actually kinda sucks.

What makes this book so fascinating is the shock she feels when her expectations and assumptions on manhood come crashing down. She thought she was going to get access to a "boys club" of privilege, instead she found out that in many ways men actually have it worse. The book is as much about her expectations and assumptions as an American woman as it is about what she learned about men.

I hope that someday every Women\s Studies class in America reads this book. I hope that someday it is required reading in High School Literature classes, just like "Black Like Me." This book is the real answer to sexism. This book needs to be read and it needs to be shared.

Our country needs this book at this moment in history. If you only read one book this year, this should be it.

Very good work.
By Roberto Figueroa Jr
Being a man, I wanted to read this to see how the author, a woman, sees the world of men. She did a very good job describing a lot of what goes on between men, and in a man's universe. How we bond with, honor, and communicate our boundaries around other men. The author intuitive and got the language of men down pat very quickly. It was very well written and clear to read.
I was very disappointed with how this book ended. The author talks about how men are scary. And stresses it as through she were implying; men are threatening.
Given all of the Author's work to break-through into the world of men, study them, as a man herself, and discover for herself what is at the source, her statement about men being scary short-changes a lot of the hard work and effort she put into discovering them, disguised herself as a man. I felt it contradicted the sum of all her efforts and hard work to pierce the veil of secrecy into the world of men.
Otherwise, an excellent book on many levels. I recommend reading it if you wan to see through the eyes of a man, or want to know what kind of world men are immersed into around other men.
It hit the nail on the head many times.

Insightful and interesting
By James A. Wilson
This is one of the more interesting books I've ever read, even though I didn't really learn anything. It seems strange to say so, because the perspective is so different from my own. However it's rather like looking at your back yard with a new friend; it calls attention to things you were aware of but didn't pay much heed. I think Ms. Vincent learned a lot from her experience, and I think a lot of women, especially those who know little of men save the stereotypes that they constantly strive to make real, could learn a great deal from it. While I gave it five stars there was a single disappointment, and that was in the language. I don't mind profanity much, but I seriously dislike crudity, and in this case it's embedded in otherwise excellent 'conversational' prose. It jars me out of the reverie of reading, which is why I dislike it. Despite that caveat I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn a little more about the differences between the sexes, rather than claiming superiority for one or the other.

Learning C# by Programming Games, by Arjan Egges, Jeroen D. Fokker, Mark H. Overmars

C# is the language of choice for learning how to program. It is a very well structured object-oriented language and avoids some of the problems of Java. An excellent free programming environment is available for C#, as well as a game programming framework. And (if necessary) moving from C# to C++ is easy.

Developing computer games is a perfect way to learn how to program in modern programming languages. This book teaches how to program in C# through the creation of computer games – and without requiring any previous programming experience.

Contrary to most programming books, Egges, Fokker and Overmars do not organize the presentation according to programming language constructs, but instead use the structure and elements of computer games as a framework. For instance, there are chapters on dealing with player input, game objects, game worlds, game states, levels, animation, physics, and intelligence. The reader will be guided through the development of four games showing the various aspects of game development. Starting with a simple shooting game, the authors move on to puzzle games consisting of multiple levels, and conclude the book by developing a full-fledged platform game with animation, game physics, and intelligent enemies. They show a number of commonly used techniques in games, such as drawing layers of sprites, rotating, scaling and animating sprites, showing a heads-up display, dealing with physics, handling interaction between game objects, and creating pleasing visual effects such as snow or glitter. At the same time, they provide a thorough introduction to C# and object-oriented programming, introducing step by step important aspects of programming in general, including many programming constructs and idioms, syntax diagrams, collections, and exception handling.

The book is also designed to be used as a basis for a game-oriented programming course. For each part, there are concluding exercises and challenges, which are generally more complex programming endeavors. Lots of supplementary materials for organizing such a course are available on the accompanying web site http://www.csharpprogramminggames.com, including installation instructions, solutions to the exercises, software installation instructions, game sprites and sounds.

About the Author

Arjan Egges is an associate professor in the Games and Virtual Worlds group in the Department of Information and Computing Sciences at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Heading the Motion Capture Lab there, his current research focuses on the integration of motion capture animation into navigation and object manipulation tasks. He regularly teaches various courses related to games and computer animation, and recently designed the new introductory programming course for the university’s new Game Technology bachelor program, using C# as the language of choice.

Jeroen Fokker is an assistant professor in the Software Technology group at Utrecht University. As the director of education, he is responsible for the undergraduate programs in Computer Science and Information Science. He has been teaching introductory programming courses for over 20 years, using C++, Haskell, Java, and C#, as well as courses on compiler construction.

Mark Overmars is a full professor in computer science at Utrecht University. Here he has done research into computational geometry, robotics, and game technology. Mark is responsible for the Game Technology educational program at Utrecht University. Furthermore, he is the author of the Game Maker software package, originally designed as a tool to teach children about the basics of object-oriented design and to raise their interest in computer science. The package, though, has developed into a full-blown authoring package for games used in education by amateurs and by professional game developers. Mark was named as one of the top 50 influential people in game development by the U.S. magazine GameDeveloper in 2010.

Absolutely On Target
By Amazon Customer
I must say, I'm really impressed with this work. A couple months ago, I planned on teaching my nephew a bit of programming - using some basic C# & games logic. Before starting with him, I made a little ~20 point outline of what I thought (a) he might like, and/or (b) would be useful for him to know.

I felt that he would probably need some sort of printed reference for the language to use between our talks - maybe a quick reference or the like. Despite its awesome power and utility for seasoned programmers/engineers, Google is a little too open-ended for an absolute beginner to use for development guidance. On Amazon, I stumbled across this book, and I'm quite happy that I did. I was especially pleased to find that it was very neatly organized, with a logic progression through the essentials steps required to -create- something, not to learn the C# language specification.

It appears that there was consideration for the level of sophistication of the readers, and the examples' level of complexity was adjusted in a very controlled manner. In my view, the material seems appropriate for those learning their first language (i.e. non-professionals), although a whole range of people would probably still enjoy it.

The example exercises, in addition to being illustrative, looked pretty fun too. So many authors create examples that seem to impress only themselves - giving little thought to the learner and their needs. Here, the examples are obviously intended to give students needed practice on specific skills, without extraneous details getting in the way.

It's clear to me that the authors put real work and thought into "Learning C# by Programming Games", and the result is excellent. I haven't been this impressed with a book in a long time. I wish this were available when I was just starting out.

Great Introduction to C# and Game Programming
By sinecure
This is a very well-written introduction to game programming and C#. The book develops several games from scratch, starting with a basic game. As games get more sophisticated, so do the C# features that implement them. The code also gets more modular, and more object oriented features of C# are exploited with each new chapter. By the end of the book, some of the code is separated into a reusable and well-thought-out game programming library.

The games in the book use XNA, which is not available for the Visual Studio Express 2015 edition. Monogame - an open source program available free of cost - is almost a drop-in replacement for XNA, with some minor annoyances. Game assets need to be manually converted to xnb files before they can be used. For conversion, I used the open source program XNB Builder, and the XNA libraries from Microsoft, loaded alongside an older version of Windows Phone Development Tools on a different machine.

Despite these few hassles, I felt the book helped me greatly in learning game programming and C#.

Don't waste your time
By travis d
This book needs xna framework which is no longer supported or updated. It also needs Microsoft studio 2010.... Which is no longer downloadable.... I sent it back after trying multiple work around. I emailed the author and asked about updates to xna or studio, and got back "when they update xna, we'll update the website"..... Only they are no longer updating xna.

Not worth the hassle. Also, xna is being phased out completely.

I bought c# players guide by Whitaker. WAY better. You can use the new, free studio 2015, and you learn the language in a fairly engaging way.

Don't waste your money or time on this.

The time of our immortality is at hand.

An undeciphered language in Crete. A rash of mysterious disappearances, from Bolivia to Japan. An ancient warning at the ruins of Babel. And a new spiritual leader, who claims that human history as we understand it is about to come to an end.

Seventeen-year-old Daniel Calder’s world falls apart when a freak accident brings personal tragedy—and he discovers there’s a link between the accident and a wildly successful new cult, the Seraphim. Catapulted into a violent struggle for humanity’s past and future, he’s not even sure who the enemy is, or if he’s battling a phantom that doesn’t exist. But as Daniel puts his life on the line, he is forced to conclude that our very survival as a species will depend on who, and what, we choose to believe.

Gr 9 Up—Daniel Calder lives an exceptional life. With an architect father and a computer genius mother, he travels the world in search of new Phaistos disc (round pieces of fired clay from ancient Greece) clues and adventures. But when his mother dies in a strange climbing accident, people across the globe disappear in the name of a new religion, and his father goes missing after a Phaistos disc translation is discovered to be too similar to the new religion's tenets, Daniel and his friends must determine just what has happened and rescue not only his father but all of humanity as well. This mystery novel places readers in a grounded realistic fiction at the beginning, and then takes an unexpected turn into the science fiction genre in the latter half, with the former portion being the more cohesive. Well-developed characters lead readers on a journey through the past toward a confusing and drawn out conclusion, which will leave them questioning the trip. Thorough integration of historical information into the narrative allows teens to learn about Phaistos discs and past civilizations, while keeping them intrigued. Strong religious overtones and an unforeseen ending may offend some ChristianJudeo readers. The first of a trilogy, The Fire Seekers has an unsteady start.—Elizabeth Speer, Cisco College, TX

Ancient Saviors or Antediluvian Horrors?
By Tinfoot
When I opened up to the first page of THE FIRE SEEKERS, I had an involuntary groan at the 1st person narrative (I had forgotten peek at the LOOK NOW feature before hitting the BUY button). Just who I am as a reader, yet I mention this to emphasize the enjoyment I had BECAUSE OF Richard Farr's skillful use of internal discourse, external action, and an absolutely entertaining melding of our hero's personality and the unraveling mysteries with a clarity that never left me muddled nor divorced me from the unique voice of our teen hero. That's a laudable achievement in respects to me as a reader who is usually pre-disposed against 1st person styles. After a lengthy prologue and mid-way into the first chapter, I knew I had to stop and go to the grocery store for what I call "reading snacks"... meaning I was definitely in it for the long haul.

Take an ancient, terrible mystery, not unlike the core of H.P. Lovecraft's own varied mythos, infuse it into an international thriller with all the exotic trimmings, then mix in a dash of outlandish teenager adventuring (and humor) that did bring to mind the movie THE GOONIES, and you get the first book in the planned BABEL TRILOGY. With such a epic scope of compiling oodles of historical fact with fun novelization of "what ifs", it makes the "From the Author: Some Notes on Fact and Fiction" at the end of the book rather interesting, do-not-miss reading in itself, replete with Farr's own wry humor (this last portion alone constitutes 7% of the book's length, going chapter by chapter). And yes, the book does quite openly lead to the next installment, so for those who prefer tidy endings, even in a pending series, you may wish to wait till all three are out. I personally wish all three were out right now. I would immediately dig into the next one... then the last one, I am sure.

Some profanity is sprinkled throughout, and those of particular sensitivity towards secular (even jocular) treatment of divinities may also want to pass. However, in reference to predominately explicit content often found in modern thrillers, THE FIRE SEEKERS is on the cleaner side of the spectrum, being on the whole a PG-13 (to borrow from the old movie ratings) body of work.

Not Sci Fi
By Avid Reader
I think Amazon made a mistake classifying this book as sci fi. And calling it YA sci fi just makes the mistake worse. I think they said YA because Daniel, the main character, is a teenager for most of the book. But he has the insight, problem-solving skills and world view of a 40 year old man so it doesn't make sense to me to limit the audience to YA readers.

And this is not a sci fi book. I think Amazon would have a Kindle best seller if they positioned it as a novel in the tradition of Dan Brown's "The DaVinci Code". If you are reading this Mr. Farr, please don't be insulted. You are a much, much better writer and have filled your book with accurate ancient history rather than half-baked goofy ideas. BUT, "The DaVinci Code" was a huge best-seller and made a ton of money. So if you are reading this review, please show it to your Amazon editor. And if someone at Amazon is reading this review, please consider my suggestion and thank you for finally putting a good book in the Kindle First program.

Any reader who enjoys adventure along with learning interesting things about ancient civilizations should enjoy this book. At one point I said to myself that I couldn't believe Daniel could get into any more threatening situations, but then he did.

A few reviewers have mentioned that very religious people might have an issue with the book. I guess that's possible. But "The DaVinci Code" said terrible things about Catholics and it was a best-seller and a profitable movie.

Huh? Sci-fi, no. Mystery, kinda. Action, yes. But it doesn't make sense.
By Ivan
This book was easily readable and I found the premise interesting. However, I had several problems.

First, I found the characters and situations preposterous or totally flat. The protagonist is Daniel, a teenage boy born to two geniuses. Dad speaks many languages and is a professor and minor celebrity. Mom used her gifts to make a boatload of money, sell the company, and home school her "average" son. This average kid cooks, extreme rock climbs, flies helicopters, scuba dives, knows karate - and all like a pro. It helps that Mom's idea of home school is to gallivant around the world, but it still stretches the imagination to the breaking point. And of course each of these skills is used to save the day at the very last moment. I found his relationship with both parents to be cliched. Of course he has daddy issues, it's that kind of book. Of course all his friends are geniuses of one sort or another. You would think that the insecurity being "average" around all these incredibly smart people might lead to some tension, but you would be wrong. His love interest is a card board cut out. His best friend is interesting, but not given enough space to really grow. His other friends are non- existent. The villain (if that's what you call him) is flat. His dad is flat. His sister is flat. The only one with any depth is Daniel and as we see, that's mostly in skills. The situations are seriously improbable and also cliched. This guy has answers! So guess what happens. The timeline of the book is hard to figure out as well. It feels like he just got home when suddenly he's off racing around the world with his best friend who was JUST released from the hospital with life threatening injuries. Does the book cover a few weeks? A few months? No idea.

Second, where was the sci-fi? I read a ton of sci-fi and in good sci-fi the world is skewed enough that it highlights the more human questions. Good sci-fi isn't always about the aliens or tech, it's about the people. But the sci-fi is there, it is always the stage that sets up the other drama. The question of what the disks are, who the Architects are, and what they are up to are asked frequently in the book, but no answers are given. I know this is the start of a series, and perhaps the author thought leaving the basic outline to another book is a good way to get return readers. I think basic outlines belong in the first book personally. Maybe he wanted more mystery. But to me, in a good serial mystery the mystery gets gradually deeper. One answered question gives birth to two new questions. Not answering the questions doesn't intrigue me, it annoys me and makes me wonder what was accomplished other than running around. And it certainly didn't set any stage or shape a world. It was only the very weak impetus to action.

Third was the ending. It just didn't work for me. I didn't like following one character through the whole book, only to have that voice replaced by another character that was still very one dimensional. It seems like society has crumbled and people have taken to the hills, but no explanation for this is given. But they could just be camping too.

The other thing that grated on me is the constant scorn that is heaped on anyone of any faith. Not just Christians, but Jews, Muslims, Hindus, even the new religion of the book. The author clearly has no use for such people. People of faith are stupid cows that believe in magic. The author grudgingly tries to be fair by making the mother go around randomly to various religious ceremonies, but just for the ceremony, and it really doesn't help.

All in all, I won't recommend this book and probably won't read this author again.

Amazon.com Review
Bryan Magee has been one of the most successful English-language popularizers of philosophy in the 20th century; in this coffee-volume, he presents a brief but information-packed history of Western philosophy from pre-Socratic Greek philosophers like Thales and Heraclitus to postmodern French thinkers like Derrida and Foucault. Illustrations fill every page, offering not only portraits of the major philosophical thinkers but illustrations of some of their key concepts, while ample marginalia provide supplementary information for historical context.

The text is profusely illustrated with numerous full-color reproductions of artwork and photographs of historical sites; sidebars introduce additional people and ideas and "Key Works" of the philosophers are listed in light-blue boxes. Writing with a clear and lively style, Magee provides an excellent introduction to the topic. Young adults will find that the often closed doors of philosophy are now open and inviting.

From Library Journal
Magee has taught philosophy at Oxford, and in each of these volumes he attempts to make philosophy understandable to the lay reader. The DK book devotes just a few pages to each of the major thinkers and is lavishly illustrated. It would be suitable for high school, college, and public libraries. Great Philosophers is a series of conversations with important contemporary philosophers about the major historical figures, originally produced for the BBC. Confessions is an autobiographical excursion through Western philosophy.

Admixture of Art and Philsophy
By Pretend Person
Brian Magee provides an admiral introduction to the major trends and personages in the history of that which we are pleased to call western philosophy. The book brings together text and artwork to present philosophical ideas and philosophers in an approachable manner. The book is a wonderful introduction that keeps the reader interested through lively text and captivating illustrations.

The text is highly readable and the prints are very enjoyable if you happen to have a magnifying glass. The book would render much better as a large format style book. As it is, a magnifying glass is necessary and some of the artwork is photo reduced to fit the dimensions of this book to such an exaggerated extent that it detracts from the force and effectiveness of the original artwork.

Excellent brief summary of the history of philosophy
By Dane
This is an excellent, simple history of philosophy for people (like me) who have little knowledge of the subject and want a clear, easy to remember overview. The format is forty or so chapters, usually four to eight pages long apiece, with interesting illustrations and sidebars, devoted to each important philosopher or philosophic movement from the ancient Greeks to the twentieth century.

I have read other books that cover the same ground as this one, but they weren't as clear and were perhaps too technical and detailed for a non-philosopher like me. At any rate, I never retained much of what I read on philosophy until I found this book.

Hands down the best book I've found on the subject
By Renowal
The Story of Philosophy is a facinating and highly informative introduction to the history of western philosophy.
It is a book that would be fun to read either from start to finish or just skipping around. It is written in a way
that is understandable to readers new to the subject, while not being dumbed down. The book is visually appealing with many
photographs and illustrations, along with sidebars on nearly every page introducing the reader to subjects relating to the main text. My only complaint is that I think the title should be "The Story of Western Philosophy", because it only lightly covers eastern and arabic philosophy, which is rather odd considering that my copy promonently features the Buddha on the cover. However, it does provide a helpful "For further reading" section that includes works on those subjects. Altogether, this is an excellent book that I am glad to add to my library. I also recommend as a good companion to this book DK's "World Religions" by John Bowker.

Classic Guide to the Zone System
By Metro Mike
For more than 20 years, The New Zone System Manual has been the classic introduction to the Zone System, a standardized method of exposure and development of black & white photography that was developed by Ansel Adams. Adams taught the Zone System in workshops, and he never intended his own Basic Photo Series to be a beginner's instructional manual. In addition, Adams' prose style is erudite and often insightful, but it is rather opaque to a beginner. The Zone System Manual was written by Minor White in 1961 to make the System more comprehensible, and it was extensively revised and updated with coauthors Richard Zakia and Peter Lorenz in 1977, and updated again in 1990.
I am surprised that this book is apparently out of print, and I hope some publisher will soon make it available again. There are other books on the Zone System, but I know of none as organized and understandable.
