The Rise: Creativity, the Gift of Failure, and the Search for Mastery, by Sarah Lewis

From celebrated art historian, curator, and teacher Sarah Lewis, a fascinating examination of how our most iconic creative endeavors—from innovation to the arts—are not achievements but conversions, corrections after failed attempts.

The gift of failure is a riddle: it will always be both the void and the start of infinite possibility. The Rise—part investigation into a psychological mystery, part an argument about creativity and art, and part a soulful celebration of the determination and courage of the human spirit—makes the case that many of the world’s greatest achievements have come from understanding the central importance of failure.

Written over the course of four years, this exquisite biography of an idea is about the improbable foundations of a creative human endeavor. Each chapter focuses on the inestimable value of often ignored ideas—the power of surrender, how play is essential for innovation, the “near win” can help propel you on the road to mastery, the importance of grit and creative practice. The Rise shares narratives about figures past and present that range from choreographers, writers, painters, inventors, and entrepreneurs; Frederick Douglass, Samuel F.B. Morse, Diane Arbus, and J.K. Rowling, for example, feature alongside choreographer Paul Taylor, Nobel Prize–winning physicists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, and Arctic explorer Ben Saunders.

With valuable lessons for pedagogy and parenting, for innovation and discovery, and for self-direction and creativity, The Rise “gives the old chestnut ‘If at first you don’t succeed…’ a jolt of adrenaline” (Elle).

From Booklist
In this scholarly yet accessible text, art curator and cultural critic Lewis seeks to redefine the place of failure in the creative process. Beginning with the metaphor of the archer’s arrow that cannot travel in a direct line but must rise and fall before it hits its target, Lewis deftly weaves together theories on failure from hundreds of sources. Moving smoothly from Wynton Marsalis’ thoughts on jazz improvisation to Al Gore’s reflection on presidential loss, Lewis’ chapters profile those who have achieved mastery in their field by following the indirect path, often moving backwards, losing out, experimenting, and playing the amateur. These tales of grit and endurance include Samuel Morse’s failed painting career prior to inventing the telegraph, Ben Saunder’s solo ski to the North Pole, choreographer Paul Taylor’s disastrous early performances, and physicist Andre Geim’s playful discovery that earned him the 2010 Nobel Prize. Lewis focuses on the broadest definition of creativity, finding cross-disciplinary inspiration in entrepreneurship, mathematics, sports, and religion. Throughout, she illuminates the ways in which failure offers the irreplaceable advantage of propelling us forward. --Lindsay Bosch

Review
"The Rise points us toward the dazzling afterlife of the dead end, shining light on numerous other counter-intuitive paths to mastery. It delineates the impetus that can be prized from failure, the genius lurking in amateurism, the scientific insights hidden within artistic process. Sarah Lewis meditates on the ways we can will ourselves across the chasms of self-doubt that separate us from astonishing innovation and insight.“ (Andrew Solomon, author of Far from the Tree)

"Success and failure are often seen as polar opposites, one the peak and the other the abyss. In The Rise, Sarah Lewis reexamines our views of both and offers news paths and paradigms. Like Malcolm Gladwell, she brilliantly takes complex ideas and makes them easy to follow, making it possible for us to see the world in a brand new way." (Edwidge Danticat, author of Create Dangerously)

"Sarah Lewis has assembled a rich trove of reflections not just on creativity but on the too-often ignored role that failure and surrender play in almost any ambitious undertaking. That counter-intuitive point of attack makes The Rise a welcome departure from standard accounts of artistry and innovation." (Lewis Hyde, author of The Gift)

"The Rise is a tour d' force—uplifting, smart, and important." (Ellen Langer, Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, author of Counter Clockwise)

"A work of rare insight and sensitivity, brilliantly researched and beautifully written, The Rise shows you how to stay open and be fearless. Sarah Lewis takes you to unexpected places, to spheres that just may become fabulous. There is no other book like it in the world." (Nell Painter, Edwards Professor of American History at Princeton University)

“The Rise marks the arrival of Sarah Lewis. With wit, heart, and remarkable research, Lewis elegantly demonstrates why excruciating, even humiliating failure is essential for success and mastery. The Rise is rich with lessons for all of us.” (Darren Walker, President of the Ford Foundation)

"Creativity is not a process, as so many books would like us to believe. It is a human condition waiting to be unearthed, as Sarah Lewis so beautifully shows us through her sharing of connected stories and personal insights in The Rise. " (Ivy Ross, CMO of Art.com)

"Sarah Lewis is one the most talented writers and curators of her generation. The Rise should not just be read by every artist, but by every person hoping to unearth his or her own capacity for discovery and creativity. She provides an important and positive voice for the arts in a turbulent time." (Agnes Gund, President Emerita, The Museum of Modern Art)

“I was raised to be terrified of making mistakes, as though there was a smooth way forward without them. There is no other way forward; either you stumble through error, failure, risk and uncertainty on the available paths or you're stuck. Sarah Lewis's The Rise makes a beautiful case both for the necessity of risk and failure and experimentation and for how the road to success is paved with such things, and along the way she tells us about arctic exploration, a future Supreme Court lawyer's captivation with Louis Armstrong's music, something surprising about Hollywood, Frederick Douglass's emphasis on beauty, and a host of other captivating stories to prove her points. ‘My life is full of mistakes. They're like pebbles that make a good road,’ said the great ceramicist Beatrice Wood; this is a map of such roads and a collection of the most beautiful of those stones.” (Rebecca Solnit, author of The Faraway Nearby)

"Independence from everything other than life itself, is what makes any writer significant to the serious reader. Sarah Lewis is sensitive to deep meanings that are not common but always, due to her vibrant prose, seem exquisitely natural. Too much about her independence from the expected, cannot be said." (Stanley Crouch, author of Kansas City Lightning)

"Lewis’s erudition in art and history is matched by her sympathy to the iterative failures of great art, making inspiring readers for those in the process of creation" (Publishers Weekly)

"Creativity, like genius, is inexplicable, but Lewis’ synthesis of history, biography and psychological research offers a thoughtful response to the question of how new ideas happen." (Kirkus)

"A well-written book that examines creativity, failure, and success. Recommended for anyone who wants to comprehend the value of innovation and discovery, as well as undergraduate and graduate students, scholars, and researchers of psychology, sociology, and the visual and performing arts." (Library Journal)

"Without a whiff of self-help preachiness, The Rise will make you reconsider your own foibles and flops, if only by showing how minor they are compared with the epic setbacks she details. From Martin Luther King Jr.’s struggle to overcome a distracting verbal tic to the phenomenon of elite women archers who go from regularly nailing the bull’s-eye to suddenly not even making the target, the book gives the old chestnut “If at first you don’t succeed…” a jolt of adrenaline." (Elle)

"Lewis, driven by her lifelong “magpie curiosity about how we become,” crafts her argument slowly, meticulously, stepping away from it like a sculptor gaining perspective on her sculpture and examining it through other eyes, other experiences, other particularities, which she weaves together into an intricate tapestry of “magpielike borrowings” filtered through the sieve of her own point of view. The Rise is a dimensional read in its entirety — highly recommended." (Maria Popova Brain Pickings)

"Lewis's voice is so lyrical and engaging that her book, "The Rise," can be read in one sitting, which is so much the better since its argument is multilayered and needs to be taken whole." (The New York Times)

Not bad, but bland
By Margarethe Bracey
I read many great reviews of this book and having read hundreds of self-help and inspirational books as well as a number on mastery, innovation and creativity, I was expecting something really good. I was disapointed. She tells some good stories but tends to ramble on and not stay on point. The literary style of her writing might work well in a novel but I found it distracting in this type of book where one generally wants to get to the point and move on to the next in a more or less robust manner. I found mysel reading and re-reading long tangled sentences that didn't seem to quite nail down what she wanted to say but danced around it. Literary and artistic -- yes. Direct and succinct -- no. Nothing in the content is new or original, nor does she bring any of her own experience into the book which might have saved it from the blandness -- maybe because she doesn't have any. She's gone to school a lot is the only thing I can tell from her biography. She clearly did a lot of research and all that data might have overwhelmed the clear line of thought one has to hold to write a really good book, as well as the heart required to connect with the reader. She writes like a very bright school girl and not like someone who has had any real experience with the subject she chose. Not bad, but a book on overcoming failure, gaining mastery, and living a truly creative life needs an author who has lived it, at least to some extent, and not just gathered pretty stories to thread together.

Turning failure on its back and dissecting the particulars can take us into the next realm of our growth and expression
By Bookreporter
There are many famous achievements noted in THE RISE, but the most salient point about failure and what it provides the person who has failed in a particular endeavor comes from a member of Scott’s failed Arctic bid, Navy Explorer George Nares: “It is true that we failed to bring home the North Pole as a national present to the world, but those who regret that circumstance may be consoled with the knowledge that failure implants more deeply in all breasts the desire to excel.” THE RISE attempts to make the case that the lessons learned from spectacular failures can only enhance and support the masterpieces that come when anyone is forced to confront the bad and reconstruct an idea into its inevitable success.

Sarah Lewis doesn’t have a huge history with failure herself. She has a BA from Harvard, a Masters of Philosophy from Oxford, and is getting a Ph.D. from Yale this year. She has been a curator at the Tate Modern and MOMA in New York. She was on Obama’s Arts Policy Committee, on Oprah’s “Power List” and a Critic at the Yale University School of Art in the MFA program. Is it possible for someone this accomplished (and under 40) to really understand what failure is for most people? Well, Lewis doesn’t bother with any stories about ordinary people. Instead, she fills the book with tales from those who, despite searching for success at some point in their lives, found huge fame and accolades later on after a period of reconstruction and reinvention.

Mythmaker J.K. Rowling, choreographer Paul Taylor and activist Frederick Douglass are all examples of famous personages who suffered the slings and arrows of fate, who survived periods of lowdown depression and endless negative reinforcement only to take those anger-inducing, frustrating circumstances and turn them into lauded achievements later on. Lewis believes that this type of resilience is possible for anyone and that these examples serve to prove that it is truly possible to recreate oneself or one’s work into something that will find purpose in the greater world.

One of the things that brings Lewis’s sources to this point after a situation that would cause most people to run for cover and never try again is what she refers to as “grit.” The resilience to take failure and continue moving towards a goal, by rethinking the original plan or just going forward with a new project in the face of past failure, requires a certain mindset. Lewis says, “Grit is a portable skill that moves across seemingly varied interests. Grit can be expressed in your chosen pursuit and appears in multiple domains over time. It can be expressed through the pursuit of painting, and then through the invention of the telegraph.” Switching course and finding new ways to attempt your particular adventure is a necessary but learnable skill that helps people meet their potential. She spends a good part of the book discussing how other theorists agree that training kids to excel in “grit” would be a progressive step in truly preparing the young for inheriting our flawed world.

Lewis writes like an academic; this is no cozy Dr. Dyer book with everything boiled down to simplistic platitudes that would find refuge on cat posters. It is a very thoughtful look at turning lemons into lemonade. Turning failure on its back and dissecting the particulars can take us into the next realm of our growth and expression. Lewis thinks it’s possible, and after reading THE RISE, I have to say I believe her.

Play, Safe Havens, Imagination, Surrender & Mastery: Sarah Lewis Teaches Us How to "Rise"
By April Yvonne Garrett
In a world where many are happy to share their opinions regarding matters about which they have given little thought, Sarah Lewis has taken the time to gift us a deeply thoughtful and meticulously crafted book that chronicles with great aplomb how failure has led to some of the world's most well-regarded successes.

The impeccable research in "The Rise" and Sarah's ability to make connections between the complex and simple make the book infinitely quotable:
"We all have a blind spot around our privileges shaped exactly like us," as Junot Daz said, and it can create a blindness to failures all around. It results in the Einstellung effect: the cost of success is that it can block our ability to see when what has worked well in the past might not any longer. In the face of entrenched failure, there are limits to reason's ability to offer us a way out. Play helps to see things anew, as do safe havens. Yet the imagination inspired from an aesthetic encounter can get us to the point of surrender, giving over to a new version of ourselves."

Play, safe havens, imagination, surrender. This book is filled with no shortage stunning illuminations.

Perhaps one of the greatest gifts Sarah offers us is the distinction between "success" and "mastery":
"Mastery requires endurance. Mastery, a word we don't use often, is not the equivalent of what we might consider its cognate -- perfectionism -- an inhuman aim motivated by a concern with how others view us. Mastery is also not the same as success -- an event-based victory based on a peak point, a punctuated moment in time. Mastery is not merely a commitment to a goal, but to a curved-line, constant pursuit."

In my mind, that quote alone makes "The Rise" an instant classic that will remain one of the top three books I gift to loved ones, friends, and associates who have vision, respect the need to attend to and correct failures, and seek mastery over success.

Critical Geographies of Cycling: History, Political Economy and Culture (Transport and Society), by Glen Norcliffe

Examining cycling from a range of geographical perspectives, this book uses historical and contemporary case studies to look at the history, politics, economy and culture of cycling. Pursuing a post-structural position in viewing understandings of the bicycle as contingent upon time and place, author Glen Norcliffe argues for the need for widespread processes such as gendered use of the bicycle, the Cyclists’ Rights Movement, and the globalization of bicycle-making to be interpreted in different ways in different settings. With this in mind, the essays in the book are divided into two sections: relational aspects are examined as Spaces of Cycling which treats technological development, innovation, and the location of production and trade of cycles, while Places of Cycling interprets specific sites of consumption - the streets of the city, in the cycling clubs, among men and women, and at the trade show. Written from a geographer’s integrative perspective to offer a broad understanding of cycling, this book will also be of interest to other social scientists in urban studies, cultural studies, technology and society, sociology, history and environmental planning.

Review
With bicycle innovation having meandered from Germany to France, UK, USA and finally the Far East, a scholarly interpretation by a geographer was overdue. Yet the spatial turn of his book towards a geography of cycling covers far more of the often complex phenomena around the bicycle - from Victorian gender cycling to trade-show activities in Taipei. Using this as a structuring principle, significant chapters of the bicycle's cultural and economic past and present are analysed thoroughly. Easy to read, this comprehensive book is an intellectual delight and the first choice for everyone seeking an overall view on the bicycle's standing. --Hans-Erhard Lessing, University of Ulm, Germany

Glen Norcliffe has produced a volume of monumental scope. One that offers a much needed critical engagement with themes lying at the intersection of the social, cultural, political, economic, and industrial history and geography of cycles and cycling. The volume is a must read for geography and planning scholars interested in 'the bicycle'. --Ron N. Buliung, University of Toronto Mississauga, Canada

The essays presented in this book provide a valuable resource for cycling history and culture. Glen Norcliffe is respected both as a geographer and cycling historian, while his own geographical position, Canada, is unusual in cycling history. A particular strength of much of the content here is its wide geographical range, often global in scope, and its engagement with topics that all too often are the stuff of hearsay, rather than structured academic research. --Nicholas Oddy, Glasgow School of Art, UK

About the Author
Glen Norcliffe is Professor Emeritus of Geography and Senior Scholar at York University, Toronto, Canada.

Bound for the North Star: True Stories of Fugitive Slaves, by Dennis Brindell Fradin

The stories of slaves who fled the South in search of freedom are some of the most riveting in American history. The fugitives usually left at night, with little or no food or money and only the light of the North Star to guide them. Gathered here are twelve stirring stories of escape, including those of Henry "Box" Brown, Ellen and William Craft, and Harriet Tubman, along with less well known but equally compelling accounts of Mary Prince, Eliza Harris, Margaret Garner, John Anderson, Solomon Northrup, and others. Accompanied by striking archival prints and photographs, these thought-provoking narratives vividly depict the horrors of slavery and the high value of freedom, and are a testimony to the tenacity of the human spirit. From Publishers Weekly
Adhering closely to the facts, often using primary source quotes, Fradin (Ida B. Wells) delivers 12 riveting accounts of daring escapes from slavery. Fradin illustrates a broad spectrum of flights, beginning with two accountsDfrom Mary Prince and from Fed (later known as John Brown)Dwho escaped to Britain, thus conveying to readers that England banned slavery prior to the U.S. and demonstrating how Prince acted as a catalyst in the British antislavery movement. Though some readers may be familiar with the escape attempts of Eliza Harris (the model for Uncle Tom's Cabin) and Margaret Garner (the inspiration for Toni Morrison's Beloved), Fradin discusses the two women and their children in the same chapter and highlights their vastly different fates. He also includes 15-year-old Ann Maria Weems, one of the few children to attempt escape alone, and Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery. The narrative focuses on the emotional realities and risks, enabling readers to feel the claustrophobia of Henry "Box" Brown's 26-hour escape from Richmond to Philadelphia inside a cramped box and carted by train as a shipment of shoes. The heroism of both black and white Underground Railroad operators shines through, especially in the memorable Oberlin-Wellington rescue in which the abolitionist town defied slave catchers and the Federal Fugitive Slave Law to save a runaway, and two chapters in which Levi ("nicknamed the President of the underground Railroad") and Katie Coffin figure prominently. Archival photographs and illustrations contribute to the historical accuracy of the stories but the design, unfortunately, looks institutional. Luckily, the attractive cover, a photograph of a square from the Underground Railroad Quilt made by Oberlin residents, will lure readers to the volume. Fradin makes liberal reference to the freed African-Americans' own accounts and will likely send many readers on to further volumes. Ages 11-up. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-Fradin offers 12 fascinating accounts of runaway slaves who successfully escaped to the North, in some cases only after several failed attempts and recaptures, and all based on primary sources. Each chapter focuses on one person or pair of individuals and varies in length from 8 to 27 pages, accompanied by informative, black-and-white reproductions of paintings, drawings, woodcuts, newspaper ads, quilt blocks, and a few rare photos. Some of these fugitives are well-known: Harriet Tubman; Eliza Harris, whose journey across the ice with her child was immortalized in Uncle Tom's Cabin; and Margaret Garner, the inspiration for Toni Morrison's Beloved. Virginia Hamilton's Many Thousand Gone (Knopf, 1993) offers briefer accounts of some of the same subjects Fradin has included. An introductory author's note that gives a brief history of slavery; an afterword entitled "Slavery Is Still with Us," which gives addresses for contacting the United Nations to join the struggle against this modern-day violation of human rights; and a bibliography of both books and Web sites all help to make this an excellent, readable historical resource.

From Booklist
Gr. 8-up. Like Virginia Hamilton's landmark Many Thousand Gone (1993) and individual accounts of Harriet Tubman and other rescuers on the Underground Railroad, this collective biography is an inspiring history of those who escaped slavery and their rescuers. It is also a horrifying, detailed account of what the people escaped. Fradin's biography Ida B. Wells (a Booklist Editors' Choice 2000 title) describes with brutal realism the lynching practices Wells fought against. In the same way, Fradin here draws on more than 16 slaves' personal experiences to show what slavery was like: the unrelenting racism; the physical brutality, including rape and flogging; the anguish of family separation. The accounts of reunions, often after years apart, are almost unbearable to read. The escapes and rescues show incredible courage, sacrifice, luck, and determination, but Fradin is clear that many slaves didn't make it, including Margaret Garner (the inspiration for Toni Morrison's 1987 novel Beloved), who slit her baby's throat so that her child would not be a slave. In contrast, there are amazing successful-rescue accounts, including those of Harriet Tubman, Levi Coffin, and William Still. Individuals who escaped often told their stories, some of which Fradin says were written down. He doesn't document his own sources and how he used them, except for a bibliography at the back, but he does point out what's fact and what's surmise. The book design is beautiful, with thick paper, clear type, and small archival photos and period sketches throughout. The narrative is direct, with no rhetoric or cover-up. Like Holocaust narratives, this is painful reading about legal racist cruelty and those who resisted it. Hazel Rochman

An excellent introduction to the topics of slavery and...
By DWD's Reviews
...the underground railroad.

While this book is obviously aimed for the "young adult" crowd, it would serve as an excellent primer for ANYONE interested in learning more about that sad, sad topic in America's history: slavery.

The author includes 12 stories about slaves who escaped north, mostly with the help of the Underground Railroad. Each story describes a different type of escape or incident - varying from the case of Solomon Northrup - a free black man who was drugged and sold into slavery while he was working in Washington, D.C. to John "Fed" Brown, a field slave who travelled a roundabout trip to freedom covering thousands of miles to John Price - an escaped slave who was captured in Ohio, but was eventually freed thanks to the near-riot of the Oberlin College community. The book ends up with the most famous member of the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman, and details a number of her exploits as a Conductor and as a Union Spy during the Civil War.

As a reader, I appreciated the variety of types of escape stories - it did not get stale reading about the same type of escape and the variety of escape plans really was a wonderful testament to human creativity in the face of hardship.

this is what I have been looking for.
By M. Heiss
This is a collection of stories told by and about the black slaves who escaped to freedom via the underground railroad in America. Many are first-person accounts, all of them are full of action and emotion. The heartbreak of slavery, the inustice, and the brutality all come through.

This book is perfect for students needing primary sources for studying the underground railroad.Very mature 7th or 8th graders could handle the violence; parents should be aware. Certainly this book would be great for an AP American History class, but in my opinion, it also works as literature for the value of the narration.

12 exciting escapes. Lots of photos accompany the stories.

Fascinating stories of true bravery, ingenuity and determination
By RFN
I had wanted to include this book in my home library for some time and finally purchased it prior to beginning a unit for Black History Month. Although the reading level is above most of my elementary students they love hearing the stories paraphrased. Great illustrations, most contemporary, as well.

From the Publisher
"Ed Easterling has given the world of investing the single best, easy-to-read, study of stock market cycles of which I know. He lays out a path for you to find your own Unexpected Returns, showing you how to confidently navigate the waters of market volatility. Serious investors will devour this book and profit. It should be required reading for investment professionals."

- John Mauldin, President, Millennium Wave Investments; author of Bull's Eye Investing

"Unexpected Returns provides a broad, deep, and provocative exploration of the factors that determine stock market investment returns over a person's lifetime. Of special interest to me, as a Federal Reserve policy advisor on monetary policy, is Easterling's exploration of the critical role of low and stable inflation as a key determinant of stock market performance."

- Harvey Rosenblum, Senior Vice President and Director of Research, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas

"Unexpected Returns is at once a penetrating analysis of more than a century of stock market experience and a realistic guide to how we may expect the markets to perform in the years ahead. Easterling's findings and conclusions are grounded on the best economic and financial thinking of our time. This is a book for the serious investor and student of the markets."

- Richard Sylla, Henry Kaufman Professor of the History of Financial Institutions and Markets, Stern School of Business, New York University; co-author of A History of Interest Rates

"The stock market is one of the few places on earth where people become more excited to buy when things are expensive, and more anxious to sell when things are cheap. Ed Easterling has penned a masterful accounting about why this is so wealth-destructive, presented without preconceived notion or bias."

- Bill Mann, Senior Editor, Investing, The Motley Fool

"People are accustomed to the vagaries of market cycles. Far too few realize that these are subsumed within secular bull and bear markets, spanning decades not years. Ed Easterling has done a fine job of describing how these long cycles work and how the investor can plan investment strategies accordingly." Rob Arnott, Chairman, Research Affiliates, LLC; Editor, Financial Analysts Journal

Individual stocks and indexes don't always move together
By Robert F. Peterson
Easterling has written a good book. The scholarship is there. Print quality is excellent and graphs are pleasing to the eye. On the downside, the author repeats himself unnecessarily at several points. The data on long term variability in the market and PE ratios is useful and illuminating but one must remember these are correlations and not numbers produced in a scientific experiment. Cause and effect can not be determined. Readers should note that the book is about the market as a whole and not individual stocks. Skilled (or perhaps lucky) investors in individual stocks can still beat the averages even in periods where the market is producing small or negative returns. (Easterling's solution to a so-so market is to invest in Hedge Funds, the downside of which makes many investors nervous). Nevertheless, this is a useful book with a broad, scholarly perspective on stock market behavior. You will be a better investor for reading it.

This work must be read in conjunction with the crestmont research website which provides updates to the charts illustrated in the book. A great analysis on investing in bear markets. These stratigies coupled with absolute return investing should be part of many portfolios in these challanging economic times. If this book was revised to reflect current market conditions it could be one of the most important works on investment. Michael J Gorman JD,CPA,CHfC

From Publishers Weekly
In this adaptation of his blog www.1000awesomethings.com, Pasricha celebrates the simple pleasures of everyday living. Focusing on both tangible pleasures and simple experiences, Pasricha provides a contemporary take on everyday inspiration that skips the typical Chicken Soup for the Soul fare: "When you push the button for the elevator and it's already there," ("Ding!"); "When the boss goes out of town" ("Who's up for a three-hour lunch?"); "Peeling that thin plastic film off new electronics" ("Welcome to the world, remote control"). Other items get more substantial discussions, including the other side of the pillow, old playground equipment, hotel lobby bathrooms, the last day of school, and the five-second rule. Though tongue-in-cheek, Pasricha emerges a committed but inviting optimist, combating life's unending stream of bad news by identifying opportunities to "share a universal high five with humanity." Readers looking for simple, unsentimental pick-me-ups should find this happy browsing.

You are invited to enjoy the AWESOME!
By Freddo
Dear Amazon.com customer,

I know we don't know each other very well, and you're thinking: "Who does this guy think he is to tell me what books to buy?". And I really don't mean to be presumptuous, but I'd like to kick-off our relationship by doing you a tremendous favor and recommending to you a book you will not forget - The Book of (Even More) AWESOME.

You see, I've been following along with the AWESOME movement for some time now, when I first discovered the award winning blog over at 1000awesomethings.com. This is where Neil Pasricha kicked things off, posting an awesome thing every weekday. It wasn't long before I found myself checking in every day to have a big smile spread across my face while I read about the pleasures of sleeping in new bed sheets, getting a prime seat at the movie theatre or hitting a bunch of green lights in a row when you're late for work. I must not have been the only one enjoying reading about life's little pleasures because before long, the site was winning awards, increasing in popularity and releasing a book - the best-selling "The Book of AWESOME" - that is filled with more of Neil's beautiful writing, keen eye for life's happy little moments and tremendous sense of humor.

So, you can imagine the smile I had on my face when I got home from work today to my pre-ordered copy of this new book - another fantastic collection of moments in life guaranteed to make you smile.

Now that we're starting to get to know each other better, let me share an embarrassing fact with you.. I've been stuck at this point in the review for the last 20 minutes. I keep picking up the book to highlight a few of my favorite awesome things, but each time I pick one I want to mention (picking the fastest line at the grocery store), I read the whole post, and turn the page - just to see what the next one is going to be (getting a hug from someone you didn't know you were in a hug relationship with). So I end up reading that post, smiling some more. Lather, rinse and repeat.

Well, this is making for a great evening of reading, but a pretty terrible job of writing a quick and efficient review. But that's the thing about Neil's writing - it sucks you in. One page will turn into five which will turn into half the book.

And while I'm warning you of some things (because at this point, we're looking out for each other, right?), I should definitely mention that it's contagious. You won't be able to read this book without starting to see your own awesome moments all around you. Whether it's recognizing one of the awesome things from the book during a rough day and it picks you right up (like when someone saves you a seat!) or coming up with your own moments, you start to realize just how much AWESOME there is out there.

Be honest with me? How many books have you read that have truly changed your perspective on things? Not by TELLING you.. this isn't some schmaltzy self-help book telling you how to live your life.. no.. by SHOWING you all the wonderful little things in the world that are easily taken for granted, but should be recognized and celebrated. Like when you pack your dishwasher PERFECTLY full, or the sudden silence when you drive from a rough road onto a smooth one.

The last thing I'll mention is that the awesome things are so incredibly universal. Not only do I think "Yes! Exactly!" whenever I'm reading it, but I want to share it with others - so I inevitably end up dialing up a friend, and reading a few posts to, sharing laughs about how applicable these are to our own shared memories. And before long, I'm ordering extra copies for my friends and family, just to see the inevitable smiles that cross their faces the minute the start paging through the book. It is guaranteed to happen - try it yourself!

Ok - I won't keep you any longer. But do yourself a favor and get a copy of this book - you will LOVE it! And then come back here and share some of your thoughts and awesome things with the rest of us. I mean, at this point we're all friends, right?

Be awesome,
Freddo

Awesome! :-)
By Ed Nottingham
A few weeks ago I read Mr. Pasricha's "The Happiness Equation" The Happiness Equation: Want Nothing + Do Anything = Have Everything and loved it! Learning about his other books ("The Book of Awesome" and "The Book of (Even More) Awesome") I wanted more.

When I ordered "The Book of (Even More) Awesome" I was not sure what I would be reading and it was different from many books that I have read. What I really liked about it was the HUGE reminder that there are so many elements of life that we too often overlook and rarely remember. In programs I deliver I often emphasize the importance of gratitude and I keep a monthly gratitude list. While reading during a recent business trip I smiled as I started to reflect on the many AWESOME things that happen to me each day. And, I started writing these down in the back "The Book of (Even More) Awesome." Bad stuff does happen and how many times each day do truly awesome little things happen. Focusing on these can have a major and positive impact on our mood, outlook, etc.

During this trip alone I wrote down some awesome events: thinking my luggage had been lost after waiting a long time only to see it roll onto the luggage carousel, returning home luggage first bag out, my cat running down the stairs to welcome me home, and more! (And, wrote down even more not related to this trip.)

If readers want a quick read that serves as a reminder of all the awesome events, experiences, and so much more that happen I strongly recommend this book. And, I believe reading it can help us to refocus from the bad "stuff" that happens to all for which we can be grateful.

Thanks Neil!

Appreciating the world around us.
By Larry T Dunn
This is a great easy read to remind us all of so many things we take for granted in this world. It's becoming too easy to focus on what's wrong with the world we live in rather than what's right that I found this book very refreshing. Not a bad gift for graduates that have their lives in front of them and see only the difficult challenges ahead of them. I also bought the Happiness Equation and between the two books Neil shines a light on how we can all sometimes get our priorities and thought processes out of sync and instead of taking the time to appreciate what is good around us, and doing those things that will bring internal rewards, we get caught up in doing things for the sake of keeping up with our neighbors.

Review

"And just when we thought we didn't need another book about screenwriting along comes this one, which in short order makes itself a must-have. Jack Epps is a great writer, a master teacher, as smart about character as he is about structure. He's distilled this part of our craft to its essence, and by heeding his book's fine wisdom we will all of us become better rewriters―and better writers." - Howard A. Rodman, Screenwriter and President of the Writer’s Guild of America, We

"Never in the history of Hollywood has a screenwriter heard the words: ‘It's perfect; don't change a thing.’ Even if someone were to say that, we know better and would change it anyway, and change it again, and again, and again. This book teaches the why and the how of rewriting and is written by a real, live, honest-to-God professional screenwriter who has successfully had many of his scripts made into movies." - Stephen Sommers, Writer and Director of The Jungle Book (1994), The Mummy (1999), and Van Helsing (2004)

"An exemplary text on screenplay writing. Drawing from both his professional and academic experiences, Jack Epps, Jr. provides an excellent distillation of ideal screenwriting practice, creating an indispensable resource for both students and self-taught screenwriters." - David Dunn, Principal Teaching Fellow in Film Studies, University of Southampton, UK

A New Essential Screenwriting Book
By Shna Lobster
Jack Epps' rewriting workshops are legendary in the halls of the USC School of Cinematic Arts. I was fortunate enough to work with Jack on my own rewrite where he shared with me the tools and strategy he employs for rewriting his scripts. "Screenwriting is Rewriting" perfectly sums up his approach to refining your characters and strengthening the heart of your story. Quite simply, he is the master of rewriting, and this book contains immensely valuable tips and advice you won't find elsewhere.

Incredibly useful on every level - I can't recommend it enough!
By Peter C.
I've taken to sampling bits of this book book before I dive into the writing day each morning, and I can't tell you how helpful it's been to have everything at the front of my brain as a result. It's a perfect match for the surgical elements of draft-digging, crafted to be dipped into as a handbook as readily as it is to be read from front to back. In short: it 100% proves Mr. Epps knows what he's talking about in the screenwriting game, and I can't recommend it enough.

Excellent book that you will reference repeatedly
By Amazon Customer
This is a fantastic book for screenwriters at all levels. It's a working reference guide that you can access over and over again at various points of your rewriting process and your career. There are other screenwriting books on the market that you read once and never reference again. This book is not one of them. It's more like a great investment in your writing career than just a book. Incredibly useful and helpful overall.
