Living by a Code

Women live by an inner "code", according to author Sophia Nelson in her new book The Woman Code. This code is actually a combination of a number of codes which fall into five major categories: Personal Codes, Emotional Codes, Spiritual Codes, Professional Codes, and Relational Codes.
I have always enjoyed self-improvement books, methods, resources. As a result, several of the ideas contained within this book I have heard before, but not in this way.
Sophia Nelson takes examples and personal incidents, and shares them in wonderfully beautiful ways to help us, the readers, understand what she is helping us learn. The examples of Donna and Janet in "Know Your Value" are examples that, I believe, will resonate with every woman. When we can look at this third-party instance, we realize the impact our understood value as girls has created us to be the women we are today. Additionally, her grandmother's reminder to "never cut what you can untie" is a poignant reminder to keep the right doors open in our lives. In the same Code, she helps us understand when to "cut" and when to "untie" to best serve the needs and times in our lives.
One part of this book that was a little overwhelming was the number of Codes Nelson introduces (twenty of them!). However, once I got into this book, I saw how they were easy to group together under the major Code areas. Although they were each separate, they were all interwoven with one another which made it easy to continue to read and grow from her writing.
An added bonus to this book is the Study Guide that is included as part of this book.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Sophia A. Nelson – Award winning author and journalist, a former White House reporter, former Congressional Committee Counsel, Motivational Speaker, Attorney and Leadership Trainer. She was on tour to promote her book The Woman Code and made a stop in Houston, Texas. I’ve heard her speak before on a webinar so I was familiar with her message to women and I did not want to miss the opportunity to see her in person.
Hearing her speak was not only enlightening but eye opening and liberating as well. She shared such profound knowledge for all women. Her message is that every woman lives by a Code that will either propel her to greatness or will keep her stuck in the challenges of life. The Code you live by is the foundation of your life. She talked about how women can be very hurtful amongst each other especially when we gossip. Don’t do it! Period. Even if another woman offends you or does not maintain her character or integrity, we should not seek to hurt her the way she hurt us, but instead, we should wish her well and essentially move one.
Her book, The Woman Code is a collection of 20 codes or keys of personal conduct that every woman should live by. It challenges women to honor themselves in the workplace, at home, with family and in relationships and friendships. It not only teaches us what to do but how to do it with grace.
When I began reading the book I got stuck on Making Peace with Your Past. We all have a past. Some of the things I’ve endured in my past were out of my control. One of the hardest things to do is to let go of those things, forgive and move forward. Instead we tend to allow regret to take over and we blame our past for our inability to achieve or be successful. If this is you, you need to read this book! One of the first steps to making peace with your past is to realize you are stuck in the past. If you still fell anger, sadness or hurt when you remember certain life events or still feel pain or anger when a certain person’s name who hurt you is mentioned, or you are constantly thinking about what you missed out on, you are stuck in the past and you need to release it.
The book is packed with relevant knowledge for today’s woman. I recommend it for your women’s group, book club or just for your own personal growth.

Sophia Nelson believes that everything women need to lead the lives they want is already inside there inside sort of locked away. Ms. Nelson has twenty keys to unlock all that inner potential. The book is divided into 5 sections: The Personal Codes, The Emotional Codes, The Spiritual Codes, The Professional Codes and The Relational Codes. Each section contains four of each code. At the back of the book there is a study guide to be used with a small group or individually. I think this is a great resource for all women and would be a great gift for friends and family.
