Define your NSP now!

The way I became a fan of Lisa was backwards from the way I usually become a fan of any writter. Usually, I hear about a book, read its reviews, buy the book, read the book, become a fan, and follow the author and her work. By the time I got Lisa's book in my hands for the first time, I had already had a very interesting two hour conversation with her, I had somebody take a picture of me with her, listened to her lecture, and gotten my copy of the book autographed by her. By then, I was already a fan, and I hadn't even read her book yet. So with great anticipation, I rewrote my "books to read" list, pushed the first 3 down the list, squeezed Selling With Noble Purpose in the top slot, and started to read it right away.
I wasn't disappointed at all. The book explains that sales people that have a nobler purpose other than just make money, usually do better, and even make more money, than those who don't. That nobler purpose could be saving lives, helping others to be more productive, or simply caring for your customer more than you care about making the sale. She calls it Noble Selling Purpose, or NSP.
She tells detailed stories about succesful sales people that have their own NSPs, and gives detailed instructions on how to write, build and practice you own NSP. This books serves well for people who want to discover their own NSP, as well as for managers and corporations that want to define an NSP for their sales force.
As Daniel Pink sugested in his book Selling is Human, and Darren Hardy repeatedly talked about in his editorials in Success Magazine, like it or not, we are all in sales. So even if you job title does not say "Sales", you are constantly trying to explain about your point of view, trying to convinve others, and selling yourself. Children try many different methods to convince their parents to have their way, and even parents have to explain to their children why they won't. You are constantly selling yourself, if not any other product or service. And I agree with Lisa, that you would be better off having a nobler porpuse other than getting your way when you do.
I highly recomend this book to everyone, and can't wait to read Lisa's next book, Leading With Noble Purpose.

Bad choice for Kindle

Always look forward to this reference and thought it would make a good addition to my Kindle. I can't recommend that and suggest you stay with the paper version. The Kindle version appears to be screen shots of all too many of the tables and charts making them virtually unreadably small, and changing font size has no effect on these 'pictures'. Very disappointed.

Illegible dumps (tiny repros) ruin this Kindle edition

Totally frustrating experience trying to read this ridiculous excuse for a Kindle edition! The clowns producing and selling us this garbage apparently have no shame in ripping people off, people who might want to actually *read* any of those many many tables and lists so common in an almanac!

In fact, this is worse than a simple waste -- it's literally infuriating!

I should have read the other reviews before purchasing this sorry 'piece of work'!! So much of it is just a nasty bait-and-switch con that there really should be laws against allowing this kind of customer rip-off, since normal ethical practices are obviously not even considered by the crooks who stick us with this pile of illegible screen shots for so many of its pages of tables and lists.

I'd try to get my money back if I knew of a way to do that for a Kindle purchase (on Jan 17, 2011).

Shame on the crooked publishers pawning this garbage off as an actual book to read ...

Thanks to the kindness of Lady Galaxy for reminding me of the Amazon policy of being able to receive a refund for a Kindle book within a week of purchase (I'd never felt the need before), I requested and promptly received just that! I was also very pleased with the marvelously generous and pleasant Amazon support for the Kindle, getting immediate approval for a refund for this sorry production of a Kindle book -- no hassle at all ... and I remain a devoted Kindle user and happy customer once again! In fact I'm such a Kindle fan that I'm always recommending it to others ... and this experience only adds to the good reasons for doing so !!

I am reviewing the Kindle edition. I should have looked at the reviews more carefully before I purchased and realized that there were almost no Kindle reviews. I thought that as I was looking in the Kindle section the reviews were all for the Kindle edition. Not the case- they are all lumped together - Hardback edition, paperback edition and Kindle edition.

The Kindle edition has several large problems compared with the print editions. First of all, for some reason, there are large omissions from the print editions. I have no idea why since size should not be a factor when creating the electronic version. You actually are getting a greater volume of information when you buy the paperback.

Secondly, all the charts and graphs are scanned in somehow and are difficult to read. If the resolution of the scan was better, it might help. However, most of these tables could be made electronically just like the text. After all, that is how they are originally made before they are published in print form. Now I grant you that it must be more difficult to publish an almanac electronically compared with, say, a John Grisham novel (which is just one really large text file), but this is what the electonic medium should be about.

Also, the full index is not present in electronic form - just the table of contents. This makes it very difficult to find particular information you want to look up. Say you want to know the state flower of Indiana. The best you can do is find that USA section in the table of contents and then turn pages - one by one - till you find Indiana and then read. You could find it in the paperback in 10 seconds - it would take minutes on the Kindle. There is no reason they could not have a detailed index at the back.

Hopefully, this will get better as electronic book publishing improves over time. I have always thought it would be great to have an almanac on a device like the Kindle or Ipad to have all this info at your fingertips, but it will have to be in a much improved published format to be really useful.

About the Author

Glyn Davis is Chancellor’s Fellow and Reader in the School of Design at the University of Edinburgh, UK. He is the co-editor, with Gary Needham, of Warhol in Ten Takes (2013), and the author of monographs on Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (2009) and Far from Heaven (2011).

Kay Dickinson is an Associate Professor of Film Studies at Concordia University, Canada. She is the editor of Movie Music: A Film Reader (2002) and the author of Off Key: When Film and Music Won't Work Together (2008).

Lisa Patti is an Assistant Professor in the Media and Society Program at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Good for MS or PhD, not BS courses

Definitely not for those new to ex phys and geared towards researchers. Purchased for a graduate level exercise physiology course, and it was not a fun read. Authors tend to go on rambling tangents about animal model research and use unnecessarily complicated words to explain basic concepts. However, everything you would want to know about ex phys is there.

Very good content but not very didactical

This is a very interesting book that covers several exercise physiology topics in much more depth that other similar books. Therefore, this is a valuable resource for teachers lecturing physiology or PhD students engaged in exercise sciences. Nevertheless, the book is not very didactical, as the subjects in each chapter are not presented in a clearly logical sequence, as it is in other similar exercise physiology books. Sometimes the writing resembles more a review article than a textbook. My advice is that this is a very good book if you already have a solid background in general physiology and exercise physiology but want a solid reference with a somewhat different approach to these topics. If you just jumped into exercise physiology it is my advice that you should opt for other, more didactical and straightforward book.

Overall I think this is a very essential textbook for any Exercise Physiologist. At times the text can get a bit confusing as the author's go beyond the depth for this particular text, however this book gives a great overview of the major concepts and ideas.

DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE FAKE REVIEWS

After skim reading this book, the only thing you would have learnt is how to run a "Hello world" program and that's pretty much it.

Reviews states "it's the perfect study guide", "it's made me a better programmer" and one reviewer even goes as far as stating "he loves the amazing quantity of examples and step by step instructions and would make you an expert in a few lessons" oh please stop it..

Don't be fooled by the fake reviews, there is absolutely NO WAY in the world a 25 page study guide... YES 25 pages, I repeat again... 25 pages could equip anyone with the knowledge and experise to write code.

So what's covered in the book you say?

• A very very brief discussion on the basics and fundamentals as well as history of C++

• Thorough steps in teaching you how to write a "Hello World" program, followed by an in depth breakdown on how it works. The author even teaches you to write a complicated version of the "Hello World" program.

Michael Golden is a journalist, social entrepreneur and public speaker who serves as a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress. Michael is a former reporter who worked at�NBC and CBS television affiliates in Illinois, Iowa, and California. His investigative and public affairs reporting earned him honors from the Associated Press, the Edward R. Murrow Awards and the Society of Professional Journalists.�Between 2000-2006, Michael worked as a campaign manager and communications strategist on political races for the White House, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House of Representatives. Finally A Game Plan

Unlock Congress did not disappoint. Michael Golden weaves in-depth research with terrific stories and elegant prose to break down the problems at the root of our system. Not only was the book on target, it motivated me to reach out to Golden and ask him how we're going to gather up the troops and march forward with the revolution! If you are interested in politics and concerned about dysfunction in Washington you MUST read this book. In understandable prose and illuminating examples you will learn exactly how we have gone astray. And most importantly, you will be provided with solutions and directions to facilitate reforms.We have heard about the problems: the influence of money, the filibuster and the gerrymandering of voting districts to name a few. If you want to understand how these arose and how they influence the outcomes, read this book. If you want to understand what we as a nation have the right to expect from our elected officials, and why, read this book. If you want to understand how congress is failing us, read this book. This is not a book about ideology. It's nonpartisan. You will learn that no matter where you stand on the political spectrum, you are getting a raw deal. And you will learn there are ways to make it right.

Fascinating read. Loved this book...

I had watched Michael Golden's interview on Politics Tonight and then pre-ordered Unlock Congress. It arrived early and I read it in two days! I'm interested in politics but I'm not always able to follow the inside details of what drives so much of the dysfunction. But Golden's book laid out the problems and solutions in a way that not only kept me interested - it also made it easy to understand the causes of what's clogging up the government. The football analogy that compared Tom Landry's defensive system to the defective system in Congress was a brilliant way to wade into the substance without making your eyes glaze over! I loved the book, and I learned a ton.

A forecasting masterpiece

This is a great book on forecasting oracle performance. I had been tasked with capacity planning work before; I wish I had read this book before undertaking those kinds of work. The book starts with explanation on the need for forecasting, types of forecasting methods available and goes on to explain the methods. After explaining a method/model, the author provides examples on how to use the method. Thankfully the explanations and the theories were not brutal for me; you will have to accept the formulas given and learn how to use them to your needs.

This book was not an easy read for me. It took several weeks (I admit, I was not reading it regularly) to read the book fully. I will have to do some real world exercises so I know how to apply the techniques in the book. It will be a while before I am fully conversant with the topics and the methods, but I am sure I will be much better off in the field of forecasting.

Without a doubt, this is one of the best books I have read in Oracle performance and planning topic.

It's something fresh about forgotten old

Being an IT person I like to read such methodological books to refresh myself.
Before starting this book I had a feeling that it was little bit opposed to the secret of Stephen Hawking books where he had just used one famous formula E=mc^2. This book looked full of overwhelming mathematical formulas.
However, author presented material in a very easy to digest way. All formulas are absolutely necessary for understanding the Forecasting approaches.
These approaches are universal and don't depend on particular Oracle version. It's everything about applying proper forecasting models depending on the Forecasting question and workload data collected against complex Oracle environment. It's very straightforward if you read it fully.
It's MUST for those who are facing questions like" What would happen if the workload was doubled in three months? Does it make sense to buy 6 more CPUs to maintain agreed SLA? etc etc.
Book audience is
1) Oracle DBAs
2) Project managers/ Architects
3) Oracle developers

This book is quite unique on a market, because most of existing Oracle books describe Performance Troubleshooting.
Knowledge from this book will not become obsolete with new version of Oracle.

A fantastic book. Not one of those that you'll be able to get through over a weekend but is one of those books that you constantly go back to for reference or validation. Some of the techniques take the mystery out of capacity planning and forecasting performance. Excellent.
