About the Author
Aldren A. Watson (1917-2013) was an illustrator and designer as well as woodworker. He had written and illustrated many magazine articles and books, including The Blacksmith and Country Furniture, published by Norton. He lived and painted in Vermont and New Hampshire until his death in 2013.

Best in Its Class

It is a pity that Watson's book is not better known among woodworkers, as it is the most comprehensive guide to using hand tools that I have yet seen on the market. Watson devotes chapters to workbenches and vises, braces and bits, chisels (which he covers quite extensively), files and rasps, mallets, saws, sandpaper, squares, and planes (the most extensive chapter in the book). He also covers less common tools such as the drawknife, the marking gauge, scrapers, the inshave, and the spokeshave, as well as very common tools like wire brushes, levels, nail sets, and screwdrivers. Watson's descriptions of each tool's function are clear and concise. His book is not cluttered by text, though it does a thorough job of explaining not only common uses for hand tools, but also advanced techniques. For example, this is one of the only woodworking books I know that explains how to cut a chamfer with a hand plane, or how to use a rasp to cut a round tenon on square stock. Perhaps the book's only fault is that it does not discuss either wooden planes or Japanese tools at all. But the book's greatest strength is its illustrations, all drawn by the author. Photographs in many other woodworking books have too many shadows to be very useful, and often a crucial tool operation is hidden by the hand that is performing it. Watson's masterful drawings overcome this problem--they illustrate tool mechanics, user posture, and wood texture, all with a minimum of extraneous detail. This work is the best single-volume book on traditional woodworking tools and techniques currently available. It is also significantly longer--over 400 pages--than most other woodworking books. Watson is required reading for anyone interested in the topic, and his book is the standard by which all other woodworking books should be judged for years to come.

Edit to add: Seven years after I wrote the above review, I find that there are one or two books on hand tools that are more comprehensive, such as Chris Schwarz's _Anarchist's Tool Chest_, but Watson is still head-and-shoulders above most of the competition. I still recommend it as the best general introduction to working wood with hand tools.

Absolutely Superb

I have recently started a new business and I have to cold-call to bring on new customers. It's something I have done previously and I absolutely HATED it, so returning to it was filling me with dread. However, as the success of my new business will hinge on my ability to cold call, I decided I had to do something about it.

Art Sobczak's book has given me a whole new outlook on calling as a way of generating business. The main reason I disliked cold calling so much is because I used to struggle with rejection, and I also consider myself to be a friendly, easy going person so I didn't like the way that cold calling always feels like a battle with the person on the other end, and I didn't enjoy annoying them. Due to reading this book, I now see that cold calling doesn't have to be (and hasn't since I've started doing it again) a constant battle. Cold calling is now just a part of my day, the same as all the other tasks I do.

Gone are the days when I'd do any task other than making a cold call, even though I knew it was the one thing I needed to be doing most. If I have a list of 50 telephone numbers I want to dial, I can now just chip through it easily rather than call zero, one or two of them and give up.

For me I'm lucky in that I am naturally quite a good salesperson, and can handle inbound and face to face sales pretty well. Outbound calling was almost a phobia for me, but now it definitely isn't. The main reason I purchased this book was to cure this phobia, and for my business it is the best $10 I'll ever spend.

As a side note - as I felt that my condition was more of a 'phobia' than just being an awful salesperson I decided that I needed to train myself to ENJOY calling, otherwise even though I could make successful cold calls I would still dread everyday that I had to make them. Therefore due to the author's recommendation in this book I purchased a self-help/positive attitude book called Pivot by Alan Zimmerman, which I found to be a wonderful help as well and together these two books have completely changed my outlook on cold calling and the result is I'm picking up thousands of dollars in new business every week, and I'm enjoying every minute.

Over the past couple of weeks I've read three cold calling books on my kindle (the top three listed for 'Cold Calling'. This one is by some distance the best.

If you simply need help with you cold calling sales technique then Smart Calling is the perfect book for you. If like me you have a bit of cold calling, then I advise you to purchase this book along with Alan Zimmerman's Pivot.

Great book for anyone who uses the phone to prospect or persuade

I just finished reading this book. I was on the fence about buying this book because I do use the phone to make appointments but I don't really sell over the phone. I was familiar with the author's reputation through his website and based on that plus what I was able to read in the book through the "Look Inside" feature on Amazon, I decided to buy it.

I'm really glad I did.

Why? Well, first the book is interesting. I would finish one chapter and immediately launch into the next one. I feel like I am getting good information.

Mr. Sobczak includes "Smart Calling Exercises" throughout the book that ask you to stop and list some information, write an opening, etc. I like this because it forces me to apply the principles I'm learning as I go along. I think this helps me retain and apply the information.

I've realized that there are many things I could improve when I am using the phone to contact prospects.

I can even see some of his advice helping me with face to face sales calls too.

I'll just say that I hope Mr. Sobczak never calls me to sell me anything--I might not be able to resist!

The information in this book will set you up to succeed

Before reading Art's book my opinion was that calling prospects on the phone was an outdated and useless idea. The truth is I didn't know how to create interaction with customers on the phone and build up an interest in their mind. Art walks you through every step in how to create a sold "Smart Calling" script and why you should focus on those areas during your call. The first time I read the book I didn't grab a pen and paper as suggested. So the second time I read it I took the time to begin making the notes and putting together my scripts. The frequently abusive conditions that banana workers experienced, the contributors point out, gave rise to one of Latin America’s earliest and most militant labor movements. Responding to both the demands of workers’ organizations and the power of U.S. capital, Latin American governments were inevitably affected by banana production. Banana Wars explores how these governments sometimes asserted their sovereignty over foreign fruit companies, but more often became their willing accomplices. With several essays focusing on the operations of the extraordinarily powerful United Fruit Company, the collection also examines the strategies and reactions of the American and European corporations seeking to profit from the sale of bananas grown by people of different cultures working in varied agricultural and economic environments.

About the Author
Sophia Lubensky has been Professor of Russian in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, University at Albany-SUNY. Her areas of specialization are lexical semantics, bilingual lexicography, methodology of teaching Russian. She is the author of the critically acclaimed, comprehensive "Random House Russian-English Dictionary of Idioms" and the widely used textbook "Nachalo."


Irina Odintsova is Associate Professor in the Department of Russian for Foreign Students at the Faculty of Philology, M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University. She specializes in functional grammar and the methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language.

Great we love it

We really like it, I recommend it to others, it is advanced though and may be a challenge to some.
It uses real everyday Russian language as opposed to 'text book' Russian. My wife who is a native speaker
believes it is a great teaching tool. So if you have a good handle on Russian intermediate and then ready to move to more natural and native speech this is a great course. Probably suitable for a 3rd year undergraduate student.

We have liked the video clips on the included CD so far, and there is so many of them. Congratulations on a modern course in Russian!

there is plenty of scope with the course with a variety of difficulty in tasks.

The Grammar supplement is also good, which is tailored slightly towards the lessons them selves.

I recommend that it is used either with a formal course or in a tutoring environment. It has a lot of assignment and homework problems perfect for this.
But you could still get a lot out of it by yourself.

The videos are made for personal use and not in full-screen format, unless you purchase the 3-DVD set separately. This said though the size is fine and quality good, and the personal screen is filled with lots of other use-full items that help you watch the clips.

Finally

It is lots of fun, which is something somewhat rare for Russian courses!

A little too Soviet?

The only real issue I have with this book is that it makes such frequent reference to the Soviet Union and phrases that were popular in Soviet times that I'm not sure if I'm learning to speak Russian as spoken today. Considering it was published in 2010, it seems to be stuck in the past, but I'm not sure if that's really true or if it's just the impression one gets when there is so much reference to a time period that ended nearly two decades prior to the books publishing. Still, it does a lot more to help you actually speak everyday language than many a Russian course does.

Okay, now that I've done that, let me start by saying this:
Book 1 of this series is what made me a fan of Bryce's. Since the moment I heard the first whisper about book 2, I have been waiting impatiently because I adore this concept.
Song of Siren picks up where In The Arms of Love leaves off, and from the first sentence of the story, the plot line is on the move.
There isn't any pointless drivel being read, and yet the pacing was spot on.
I love the characters in this series, and adored the fact that I got to see them develop and grew to love (or deeply despise) them even more.

The action was amazing. The scenes were so vivid that it was easy to 'see' them happening. Not an easy task to accomplish, especially since, well, octogirls are involved.

Amidst all the action and ridiculously hot sex (friggin tentacles!!) the emotional impact was insanely powerful.
I laughed, almost cried, and mentally cheered with maniac glee on some likely inappropriate parts (#TeamLiana).
Overrall, to say I enjoyed this is a vast understatement.

I'm Under Bryce's Siren Song

Let me say that I am a fan of Bryce's work. His writing is vivid, tight, well-edited, and just a joy to read. His latest takes us further into Jaelyn and Lianna's world, and I have to say I am blown away by his wordsmithing.

I love this world. I love the dystopian feel of it, because I can see the segregation of people quite well. It's happened in the real world, and it certainly would happen in a fantasy world like this. I love the romance between Lianna and Jaelyn, and I love his supporting cast. The villains are suitably complex, the heroes are not necessarily fighters or know what the right thing is to do... all the characters are fully formed and realized with their own voices, motivations, and goals. I adore this romance. It's not just a romance or an erotic romance (because lemme tell you... the sex in here is absolutely hot as heck!), but a story of learning how far a person will go for love, and what they'll do to keep it. Five out of five. Can't wait until the next.

After the success of his Alan Greenspan biography, Martin tackles another subject with tremendous influence on American economics and politics and a largely unknown private life, but this attempt to find the man behind the public figure meets with limited success. This life of the 68-year-old Ralph Nader lingers over his already well-known public advocacy successes, like the fight for auto safety, then quickly skims over the period from 1975 to 2000, eager to get to the behind-the-scenes story of his controversial presidential campaign. The three chapters on the race provide solid chronology, but the larger questions remain open to speculation. Forced to address whether Nader cost Gore the election, the author merely ventures that "the answer lies somewhere near the intersection of political perceptions and first-grade math." He does show, however, how Nader's tenacious, unapologetic campaigning style was likely shaped by his childhood experience attending town meetings in Winsted, Conn., where his immigrant father was famously reluctant to let go of a debate. Martin has interviewed Nader and found plenty of people willing to talk about him, including former Princeton classmates and several "Nader's Raiders" from the 1970s, but never quite pierces the veil of mystery with which his subject has surrounded himself. What the story lacks in personal detail, however, it makes up in historical perspective, clarifying Nader's status as one of the most influential Americans of the 20th century.

Incredibly, there has been no biography of Ralph Nader for over 25 years. Journalist Martin, author of the well-received Greenspan: The Man Behind the Money, here addresses the life of the longtime adversary of corporate power and recent presidential candidate. Based upon hundreds of interviews with associates, family, and Nader himself, the book will reward readers with immediacy, vitality, wit, and an evenhanded portrait of a subject, churlish and heroic at once, who in the course of "a gigantic life" has fashioned an immeasurable legacy in business, law, society, and politics. Chapters on Nader's boyhood in Winsted, CT, show how his family and the town in which they settled have been constant influences. Nader's "golden age," from 1966 to 1976, was followed by many years of eclipse. But there is "something immutable" in Nader, who reemerged as a political force, as witnessed in 2000 by "Gush and Bore." Since Nader is still going strong, this book will by no means be the last word. But it is a good piece of work, highly recommended to all libraries. Robert F. Nardini, Chichester, NH

An incredible life story that was poorly written...

Nader has an incredible life story that would probably make for an excellent movie or biography. However, this book does a lackluster job spinning Nader's story into an engaging narrative. Most of the chapters follow the same boring pattern: Nader identified issue X, Nader decided to start a nonprofit to combat issue X, Nader tapped John Doe to lead the nonprofit, and the nonprofit did or did not succeed in getting a law passed. It became repetitious and dull very quickly, and the best parts occurred when the author deviated from this formula and mentioned more specific details. For example, at one point Nader was incredibly close to getting a bill passed to create a Consumer Protection Agency, yet he inexplicably began criticizing the Congressman who had championed the bill by saying he had gutted it. This led to a permanent rift and did damage to Nader's cause, and it had me scratching my head as to what Nader was thinking. Was Nader right in that the bill had been effectively gutted? Or was Nader upset for other reasons? I don't know, because the author doesn't tell us. This is the kind of detail I'm looking for in a book like this-- if I wanted to simply read a laundry-list of organizations started by Nader, I could simply look him up in an encyclopedia.

Even so, Nader's life has been so full of activity that I felt compelled to finish the book despite the fact that the author's style quite frequently put me to sleep. Oftentimes I fell asleep with the book in my lap and wondered why I was wasting my life reading it, until I remembered that Nader had accomplished more in his lifetime than pretty much anyone I have ever met. Didn't this guy ever get tired? Even when he launched initiatives that failed, such as his attempt to "raid" Congress by hiring a bunch of undergrads to do slipshod research over the summer on Congress members who were up for election, he picked himself right back up and continued chugging along. The book skips over most of his activities in the late 1980's and early 1990's, although I have to believe he wasn't simply sitting on his hands. One clear takeaway is that Nader has no "life" in the traditional sense-- he has no interest in hobbies or personal relationships, instead pouring himself completing into his work. It is admirable in a sense, to see someone so dedicated to making a difference, yet on the other hand it is a bad saddening to envision him sitting alone on Thanksgiving reading some Congressional report.

One of the best descriptions in the book comes from a man who called Nader a modern-day "Jeremiah." Like a biblical prophet, Nader finds something that bothers him and then goes sounding the alarm as he scolds the person or organization in question for their bad behavior. In a sense, the rest of us are very fortunate to have the Ralph Nader's of this world to keep corporations and other groups in check. For the most part, his cause is incredibly just and I am glad he has waged these battles. However, the book shows a meaner, nastier side of Nader that gets caught up in personal slights and does things that subvert the cause he is supposedly trying to uphold. Nader had a huge opportunity to do good when Carter was in office with lots of ex-Naderites appointed to offices in the administration, but Nader was upset that Carter didn't consult with him enough so he decided to start complaining like a child who didn't get his way. He ruined a large number of relationships which diminished his effectiveness later, but apparently he didn't learn his lesson as he did the same thing when Clinton was in office. Al Gore didn't return Nader's phone calls, so Nader declares war on Gore and decides to teach him a lesson. Sure, a lot of Nader's criticisms of Gore were valid, but was that the real reason Nader decided to run? If Gore had been smart enough to pay lip service to Nader, giving him recognition and facetime, Nader probably would have went and found some other ax to grind. But Gore failed to realize just how vengeful and vindictive Nader could be, and so we ended up with 8 years of George W. Bush.

Also, the author never manages to shed any light on why Nader chose to avoid issues such as gay rights, women's rights, civil rights, etc. Why the incessant focus on consumer advocacy, even when he became a presidential candidate? It caused me to lose a little respect for Nader when he essentially engaged in fence-sitting on some of the most important issues of the past fifty years.

Regardless of Nader's personal faults, I have come away from this book with the belief that Nader is an American hero, albeit a flawed one. We'll probably never know exactly what drove him to live his life the way he did, but a large number of people are unquestionably better off as a result.

Unbiased portrait of a true American iconoclast

I'm admittedly biased towards Ralph Nader, having volunteered and voted for him during the 1996 and 2000 presidential elections. That being said, I found this book to be remarkably balanced. It's neither a hagiography nor a hatchet job, but rather gives equal weight to Nader's achievements and shortcomings.
Martin writes extremely well, with a brisk pace: by page 30 Nader has finished law school, and by page 45 he's written "Unsafe at Any Speed" and is ready to take on GM! Despite the quick pacing, Martin doesn't gloss over Nader's early years: he presents the reader with all the necessary information on Nader's upbringing and influences, relying on well-chosen anecdotes rather than tedious genealogies.
The section on Nader's crusade against GM practically reads like a spy thriller. Fans of Nader will thrill during his "peak period" of 1969-1976, when it seemed he could do no wrong. But those same fans will scratch their head later on, when Nader inexplicably sabotages some of his own initiatives through a refusal to compromise with Congress.
Martin quickens the pace of the book yet again when detailing Nader's quixotic presidential runs. He describes the alienation Nader felt after being rebuffed by the Clinton/Gore administration - a feeling than no doubt sparked his candidacy and defused any feelings of remorse at possibly costing Gore the 2000 election. The irony of Nader's career is that he achieved the most when Republicans were in power, because he expected little of their administrations and focused on galvanizing grassroots efforts to achieve reform.
This is an excellent biography, a revealing portrait of a man who has devoted his life to consumer advocacy and making America a safer place to live.

Ralph Nader Makes a Little More Sense Now

I read this book because I admire Nader and I wanted to find out more about him. Nader: Crusader, Spoiler Icon is a very detailed and well-written book. It doesn't waste too much time on his childhood but instead dives into the interesting stuff: the work Nader tirelessly did to make the country better.
I was hoping for some more info on Nader's private life, but apparently he never really had one. When you work 18-20 hours a day, 7 days a week there isn't much time for leisure. I enjoyed reading about his ascent to power and (being 22) I never realized how much power he had when he was in his prime. This book is quite balanced: it covers his successes as well his wacky failures. Example: Fight to Advance the Nation's Sports, a silly campaign against bad food and high ticket prices at sports games. We learn about Nader's extreme myopia, fighting hard to get something done and mercilessly lambasting anyone who gets in his way, even former allies. Apparently Nader developed a bad habit of alienating people when he needed them the most.
In the end, despite learning of Nader's many blunders, I came away respecting the guy more than I did before. He is certainly one of the most important people of the twentieth century. Never have I come across a figure in history who so throroughly rejects the pleasures of life in favor of a constant devotion to the cause. Nader is, apparently, something of a secular saint. If you want to get the inside scoop on the battles Nader fought, I recommend this book.
