How does a Jew living in the United States at the outbreak of WWII end up being the warden in the most notorious Nazi concentration camp? Yakov Kozalchik was better known as "The Warden of the Block of Death." What was he doing at Auschwitz? Why did the governments of Poland and Czechoslovakia request his extradition? And why was no tombstone erected to honor him?

Fifty years after Kozalchik's passing, Brigadier General (res.) Amir Haskel, a pilot in the Israeli Air Force and a researcher of the Holocaust, begins exploring the amazing life story of Kozalchik. Little by little, he uncovers the hidden and unheralded actions of this larger-than-life Jew. As Haskel digs deeper he realizes that the man who many called "The Hangman” was, in fact, a hero.

Brigadier General (res.) Amir Haskel, born in 1953, is one of the founders of the "Witnesses in Uniform" mission, which brings IDF soldiers and officers to Poland to commemorate and learn about the Holocaust. Since retiring from military service in 2003, he has delved into Holocaust research and has guided IDF delegations to Poland.

Angel or Devil in the Holocaust
By C. Yates
I love reading this book about a man who was 'Samson Like' and appointed to take over at the Block 11 in the concentration camp. This is a true story as brought together by word of mouth, letters, newspaper articles and testimonies. Much research was done to produce the book about Yakov Kozalchik. He is an extraordinary man born with characteristics that were more in looking like the Nazi than the Jews. During World War II Jakov was put in charge of Block 11(the killing block) due to his physical prowess. He saved many Jews from death and was extraordinarily kind to many others. He had to beat, hang and be mean to some of the prisoners as directed by the Nazi though his heart was not in it. The man was huge! He had been in exhibits prior to the war showing off his body and strength in his country and ours. The Germans were fascinated by him. He was called 'Samson" in relating to his build.

Jakov's family was killed in the camp. He later married another woman and had children. He more or less disappeared for a while and there were charges brought against him for the deaths he caused (under duress) in the camps. Later the researchers who acted like historical detectives found only good came from Jakov and his kindnesses. He had a grave marker and many came to honor him and still do. This is definitely a book worth reading if you are learning about the Nazi, World War II and the Holocaust. I read the book from Amazon on my
Kindle. You can read your right away if you order from Amazon. This man is truly a hero and in my mind an angel!!

I was present in Auschwitz as visitor hearing from Amir (as my group leader) this amazing story in Block 11 .
After the book published I read it. the story and the colors Amir put in to it make you fill like being inside this real historical thriller where death and life mix!
I couldn't stop reading it!
What come to my mind is the courage Jacob had and he's scene for survival and with the knowledge its real story.....
It make me think about judgment of people and how life looks like n desperate and hopeless situations.
Highly recommended

"the Warden of block 11 - strong recommendation from Sammy Keinan"
By Sammy Keinan
I am a son of an holocaust survivor. One cannot escape from the memories of that horrified and traumatic period.. The implications exist every where , so that actions, decisions , the way you perceive situations and ideas - the source is so obvious - the holocaust.
My father is a hero. He is a living miracle. He has dedicated his life to the immortalization of the disaster of the Jewish people in the second world war. That is how he became acquainted with Amir Haskel and that's how I was exposed to Amir's book "The warden of block 11".

Reading "the warden" was a shaking experience for me. I found myself chained to my seat reading breathlessly the whole book from the first page to the last. The drama gains its power from the first story in the first page and it is so sudden and surprising that the energy charged from it keeps you in tension for the rest of the story. As far as know Amir is a commander and a pilot , but reading the book gives you the impression that a professional author wrote it.
I strongly recommend "The warden of block 11" and I want to thank Amir for having a tremendous and fantastic experience by reading his book.
