An evocative memoir of growing up in Worcester, Mass.

This reprint of the original (1954) much-praised memoir by the playwright S. N. Behrman contains photos, which the original lacked. Behrman grew up in 1890 - 1915 Worcester, Massachusetts, in a Jewish enclave of immigrants, alongside similar neighborhoods of Swedish-, Irish-, Italian-, and other European-Americans in this bustling industrial city 50 miles west of Boston. Behrman went on to become a highly popular playwright and essayist - this memoir arose from the acclaim following the publication of shorter pieces in The New Yorker magazine. It is especially interesting - and moving - as another century nears its end. Some of the episodes recounted are hilarious, some poignant, all compelling. You don't have to Jewish - or from Worcester - to be charmed by these memories. And you can find out why even in a tiny community of Jews, there are always at least two synagogues!

Reliving the history thru my own family

This is an incredible accounting of days past. I was born in Worcester and, more than 50 years later, still do. My great grandparents moved here at the turn of the century, and lived in the neighborhoods that the author speaks about. My mother has told me stories of her grandfather's grocery store on Providence Street, that when Passover would come, Manischewitz would send him "Kosher for Pesach" labels to apply to all the coffee cans he had on his shelves. And he was orthodox back then.
I loved reading about the author's summer excursions to Lake Quinsigamond to go swimming with his friend, and also when he mentioned White City and the Amusement Park. I had heard stories of the park from my dad and others, but sadly it closed 3 years before I was born. The shopping center has remained and has been recently remodeled.
Loved the story about Uncle Harry's wife Ida going to the Poli's vaudeville theatre on Saturdays (the Sabbath). That theatre is now The Hanover Theatre, a very successful entertainment venue in the city.
And I never knew that Clark University (my alma mater) used to be Clark College.
I recently came across a very good condition hardcover copy (less jacket and in perfect condition except for the pages discolored due to age) of this book, and so enjoyed reading it as you can see by my comments. It may have been written in 1954, just under a decade before I was born, but with my family living in the city during the years that the author was here, and with me still here to see the changes in the city. this has been an incredible find for me.
But the book would be interesting to anyone, even if they weren't from Worcester, as I am sure that the stories could fit anywhere with anyone's family.
