Amazon.com Review
Bryan Magee has been one of the most successful English-language popularizers of philosophy in the 20th century; in this coffee-volume, he presents a brief but information-packed history of Western philosophy from pre-Socratic Greek philosophers like Thales and Heraclitus to postmodern French thinkers like Derrida and Foucault. Illustrations fill every page, offering not only portraits of the major philosophical thinkers but illustrations of some of their key concepts, while ample marginalia provide supplementary information for historical context.
From School Library Journal
YA-This gloriously illustrated and accessible book enables readers to embark on an adventure in philosophy. The chapters cover "The Greeks and Their World," "Christianity and Philosophy," "The Beginnings of Modern Science," "The Great Rationalists," "The Great Empiricists," "Revolutionary French Thinkers," "A Golden Century of German Philosophy," "Democracy and Philosophy," and "20th-Century Philosophy." The text is profusely illustrated with numerous full-color reproductions of artwork and photographs of historical sites; sidebars introduce additional people and ideas and "Key Works" of the philosophers are listed in light-blue boxes. Writing with a clear and lively style, Magee provides an excellent introduction to the topic. Young adults will find that the often closed doors of philosophy are now open and inviting.

From Library Journal
Magee has taught philosophy at Oxford, and in each of these volumes he attempts to make philosophy understandable to the lay reader. The DK book devotes just a few pages to each of the major thinkers and is lavishly illustrated. It would be suitable for high school, college, and public libraries. Great Philosophers is a series of conversations with important contemporary philosophers about the major historical figures, originally produced for the BBC. Confessions is an autobiographical excursion through Western philosophy.

Admixture of Art and Philsophy
By Pretend Person
Brian Magee provides an admiral introduction to the major trends and personages in the history of that which we are pleased to call western philosophy. The book brings together text and artwork to present philosophical ideas and philosophers in an approachable manner. The book is a wonderful introduction that keeps the reader interested through lively text and captivating illustrations.
The text is highly readable and the prints are very enjoyable if you happen to have a magnifying glass. The book would render much better as a large format style book. As it is, a magnifying glass is necessary and some of the artwork is photo reduced to fit the dimensions of this book to such an exaggerated extent that it detracts from the force and effectiveness of the original artwork.

Excellent brief summary of the history of philosophy
By Dane
This is an excellent, simple history of philosophy for people (like me) who have little knowledge of the subject and want a clear, easy to remember overview. The format is forty or so chapters, usually four to eight pages long apiece, with interesting illustrations and sidebars, devoted to each important philosopher or philosophic movement from the ancient Greeks to the twentieth century.
I have read other books that cover the same ground as this one, but they weren't as clear and were perhaps too technical and detailed for a non-philosopher like me. At any rate, I never retained much of what I read on philosophy until I found this book.

Hands down the best book I've found on the subject
By Renowal
The Story of Philosophy is a facinating and highly informative introduction to the history of western philosophy.
It is a book that would be fun to read either from start to finish or just skipping around. It is written in a way
that is understandable to readers new to the subject, while not being dumbed down. The book is visually appealing with many
photographs and illustrations, along with sidebars on nearly every page introducing the reader to subjects relating to the main text. My only complaint is that I think the title should be "The Story of Western Philosophy", because it only lightly covers eastern and arabic philosophy, which is rather odd considering that my copy promonently features the Buddha on the cover. However, it does provide a helpful "For further reading" section that includes works on those subjects. Altogether, this is an excellent book that I am glad to add to my library. I also recommend as a good companion to this book DK's "World Religions" by John Bowker.
