About the Author
Nan Narboe worked as a psychotherapist and trainer for forty years, and has since transitioned into consulting. Based in Portland, Oregon, she currently specializes in working with entrepreneurs and with people deciding what to do with the rest of their lives. The interplay between individual traits, chronological age, and developmental stage has been a lifelong fascination, the best part of which has been watching her daughter grow up. Nan co-founded L'Auberge, a five-course restaurant that presaged the -local food- movement, and Cascade Valley School, a democratic school inspired by the Sudbury model. She launched her writing apprenticeship at forty by attending the feminist workshop, Flight of the Mind, and sold her first piece a mere twenty-eight years later.

I would have loved to hear more of Nan's views on aging

Quite a compelling read. I appreciated the varied perspectives on the aging continuum. I would have loved to hear more of Nan's views on aging. Maybe the sequel. This is a great book for those caring for the aging. I would highly recommend this book and will plan to use it in my qualitative research and gerontology courses.

A great anthology of views on aging

This useful and entertaining compilation of essays is a great companion for anyone curious about what to expect along life's road. I recommend it highly for its wide array of views, each one a different writer's perspective of what it's like to arrive at a particular age, from the 50s years through the 90s. Some are personal stories, some more general; all are thought-provoking. There's humor and a lot of reflection. I found nuggets I'll treasure in every one. A few: “I keep giving myself away to the next moment, and the next moment receives me. I just have to step through.” – Susan Moon. “I thought old ladies ruled the world.” – Molly Giles. “Maybe I am being prepared, ripening like a wine grape in the sun, steeping like a good cup of tea, evolving like a caterpillar being chrysalized.” – David 'Lucky' Goff. “At sixty-five you are a distilled and aged version of who you've always been: you, only more potent.” – Barbara Neely. “...the art of living in the present is not so much controlling time, it's losing track of time.” – Gloria Steinem. “Now I trust myself and make my own way in the world, stumbling and getting back up again.” – Susan Troccolo.
My favorites tend to be in the later sections. The 50s decade is busy figuring things out, looking toward the future, whereas the older folks are taking the time to muse, to ponder the mysteries. They're noticing bodily decay, too, but mostly coming to terms with it. I find it surprising that little is said about religious faith when writing about thoughts of death, other than a quick thanks to God or a statement of having no belief. Susan Moon writes of Buddhism, and there's a marvelous piece by Ram Dass on being with dying people and meditating (this in the 80s section). And Jan Slepian sums it up in the 90s with “It's all astonishing.”
Nan Narboe has done a fine job as editor of this anthology. I'll be referring back to it many times.

Perfect Title, Perfect Book

It's so odd that when we're younger, we can't imagine how difficult it is to grow older. It's not like life ends at 25, or 30, or even 40. These lyrical essays on the "art" of aging are a perfect primer for every human. So many of us long for an 'owner's manual' for both our lives and our bodies. These fastidiously curated essays are the perfect answer. With work from Judy Blume, Gloria Steinam, Kate Clinton, Ursula Le Guin, and many others, it both an excellent read, and an outstanding gift for someone you know.
